  6. PROBLEM:       A customer reported extremely slow performance on his
  7.                NetWare Access Server when running his customized order
  8.                entry software.  The symptom was that screen information on
  9.                his remote PC using the Access Server was three to four
  10.                lines behind his keyboard input.  The NAS configuration was
  11.                as follows:

  14.                Modems         Easy Statplex v.32 at 9600 baud 
  15.                Ram on NAS     4MB 
  16.                NAS version    1.01 with PTF 209 patches applied 
  17.                LAN Adapter    NE2000 
  18.                File Server    Advanced 2.15c, NE2000, 9MB RAM

  20. SOLUTION:      The solution to his problem consisted of two parts.  In the
  21.                NAS software v1.01, some changes have been made to the
  22.                DVSETUP.DV file that have resulted in a slowing of the
  23.                screen refresh time at the remote workstation.  By using the
  24.                DVSETUP.DV from v1.0, we were able to significantly increase
  25.                the screen response time at the remote site.

  27.                Part two of the solution was to modify the customized
  28.                software he was using.  Apparently there was a lot of
  29.                overhead in this software which, when run on a typical LAN
  30.                workstation, did not result in noticeable degradation in
  31.                the processing speed.  However, with four users sharing the
  32.                processor on the NAS workstation, this overhead resulted in
  33.                a significant decrease in performance.  The dealer who
  34.                called in this problem wrote the software, so it was an easy
  35.                matter for him to disable some of the unused functions of
  36.                the software.  The combination of these two adjustments has
  37.                improved the performance on the NAS to the customer's
  38.                satisfaction.
