- NOVELL EXPANDS NETWARE ARCHIVING OPTIONS THROUGH
- TECHNOLOGY PARTNERSHIP WITH CHEYENNE
-
- ARCserve Backup Product is Certified for NetWare
-
- BOSTON, Mass., NETWORLD -- February 11, 1991 -- Novell, Inc., developer of
- NetWare systems software products, today announced that it has certified
- the ARCserve NetWare Loadable Module (NLM) from Cheyenne Software, Inc.,
- expanding functionality and increasing options in data archiving services
- for NetWare users. Cheyenne's backup product has been certified through
- Novell's Independent Manufacturers Support Program (IMSP) as compatible
- with the NetWare environment and with other IMSP-certified networking
- components on the market.
-
- The company also announced that it will include B/R Device Interface, a new
- backup subsystem module developed in conjunction with Cheyenne, in its core
- NetWare v3.11 network operating system product. B/R Device Interface works
- in conjunction with Novell's backup and restore server-based application,
- SBACKUP. B/R Device Interface allows SBACKUP to be compatible with more
- than 50 backup subsystems currently used by NetWare customers.
-
- In addition, Novell is licensing optional client agents from Cheyenne that
- allow SBACKUP to archive information residing on DOS, Windows, OS/2 and
- UNIX desktop systems. These client agents are provided in NetWare B/R
- Client Services v1.0, an optional product available in March 1991.
-
- "Cheyenne has been among the leaders in archival technology since 1988,"
- said John Edwards, Novell product line manager for enterprise network
- operating systems. "Close cooperation between the two companies has
- resulted in enhanced backup and restore capabilities, tightly coupled with
- NetWare's client/server architecture, creating efficient, scalable and
- cost-effective archiving solutions for NetWare customers.
-
- "Backup devices can represent a substantial investment, and our goal is to
- preserve those investments by allowing current systems to be used in
- conjunction with NetWare v3.11's SBACKUP application," Edwards added.
- "When customers purchase NetWare B/R Driver Kit v1.0, an optional product,
- they expand SBACKUP to be compatible with new generation backup products,
- such as high-capacity tape subsystems or optical storage devices."
-
- Features unique to Novell's NetWare v3.11 B/R Device Interface include:
-
- o Hardware and media independence -- More than 50 backup devices are
- supported by NetWare v3.11 without modification. Customers can add
- additional subsystem support by purchasing NetWare B/R Driver Kit
- v1.0, which expands the number of compatible backup subsystems to more
- than 100.
-
- o Client backup and restore services -- Customers who purchase the
- optional NetWare B/R Client Services v1.0 can use SBACKUP to archive
- information residing on DOS, Windows and OS/2 client workstations.
