  3.          *** Problems Connecting with a USR Dual Standard ***

  5. Are you one of those that has trouble logging on to some 9600 baud 
  6. boards?  The problem is that your modem doesn't quite conform to the
  7. USR Dual Standard handshaking sequence.  The Dual Standard first tries to 
  8. connect as a V.32 modem.  If this fails, the modem proceeds to acting
  9. like a standard HST and makes the 2400 baud connect.  Your modem isn't
  10. waiting long enough for the 2400 baud tone and has dropped to trying to
  11. connect at 1200 baud.  What you need to do is: (In order of preference.)
  12.  
  13. 1. Get a ROM upgrade.
  14.    The modem needs to have the proper software to connect with a Dual 
  15.    Standard.  The fault lies with the modem's manufacturer and they 
  16.    should provide the proper solution.
  17.    
  18. 2. Set the S register associated with "Pause on Connect"
  19.    This option may or may not be available with your particular modem. 
  20.    Look at your manual and see if you can find a S-register that forces 
  21.    the modem to wait for so many parts of a second before beginning to
  22.    attempt to connect.

  24. 3. Add waits to the dialing sequence.
  25.    Prometheus, Everex and several other 2400 baud modem...
  26.    Add 7 commas and  a capitol D.... EG.  696-3415,,,,,,,D
  27.    which adds a delay then makes the connect!  Your Modem program may 
  28.    have the ability to change the post dial characters.  This is 
  29.    normally a Carriage-return character on Hayes compatibles.  The ,,,,,,,D
  30.    can be placed there but it will be added to calls that don't need the 
  31.    pause.  (Some modems won't need/use the D, you may need to only use the 
  32.    commas.)

  34. All modems can finally attach to a Dual Standard modem  using one of the 
  35. above solutions.  Remember, what you're trying to do is make the modem 
  36. wait until the Dual Standard gets past the V.32 portion which is several 
  37. seconds in length.

  39. Qmodem will often configure such a modem to work with a dual standard.  
  40. If you can't seem to get it to work with your tries, let Qmodem give it 
  41. a go.  It also allow you to set different suffix codes for different 
  42. numbers.
