- -------------------------------------------------------------
- This is a replacement for a previous package called EXTENDER,
- which was also a product of Key Software Products. If you
- are a licensed user of version 1.40 or later of EXTENDER, or an
- earlier version of LASTBYTE, you may use the same access key you
- already have to license this copy of LASTBYTE. If you are a
- licensed user of an earlier version of EXTENDER, contact Key
- Software Products for a new access key at no cost. Otherwise,
- see LICENSE.DOC to find out how to access ALL 384k of memory!
- -------------------------------------------------------------
-
-
- The LASTBYTE software consists of the following 28 distribution
- files. Feel free to upload this package to any bulletin board, but
- please be sure all 28 original (unmodified) distribution files are
- included in the upload.
-
- README.1ST This text file.
-
- WHATSNEW.114 A text file describing changes since version 1.13
- WHATSNEW.113 A text file describing changes since version 1.12
- WHATSNEW.112 A text file describing changes since version 1.11
- WHATSNEW.111 A text file describing changes since version 1.10
- WHATSNEW.110 A text file describing changes since version 1.00
-
- LICENSE.DOC A text file explaining how to license your copy of
- LASTBYTE and obtain your own personal access key that
- permits access to all 384k of high memory. Without
- an access key, you will be able to try out all the
- features of LASTBYTE, but your access will be
- restricted to a maximum of 32k of high DOS memory
- and 32k of high Bank-Switch memory.
-
- WARRANTY.DOC A text file explaining the terms and conditions of
- the LASTBYTE warranty.
-
- LASTBYTE.DOC A text file explaining how to use LASTBYTE.
-
- LICENSE.EXE This program modifies the file LASTBYTE.SYS to install
- your name and personal access key.
-
- LASTBYTE.SYS This device driver must be loaded before using any of
- the other software supplied with LASTBYTE. It
- determines what high memory space can be used and
- initializes it. If possible, it will also copy any
- Bios ROM it finds to Shadow RAM for faster execution.
- When finished with its initialization process,
- LASTBYTE relocates the resident portion of itself to
- high memory, leaving only 32 bytes of itself in DOS
- low memory.
-
- HIGHDRVR.SYS This device driver is used to load other device
- drivers into high memory. Each use of HIGHDRVR.SYS
- leaves only 112 bytes of itself in conventional memory
- in order to connect the device driver (that was
- loaded into high memory) to the operating system.
-
- HIGHDISK.SYS This device driver implements a RAM disk in High
- Memory. (The driver itself may be loaded into high
- memory by using HIGHDRVR.SYS.)
-
- HIGHEMS3.SYS A pair of device drivers that emulate Expanded Memory
- HIGHEMS4.SYS in High Memory. HIGHEMS3 is compliant with LIM spec
- 3.2; HIGHEMS4 is compliant with LIM spec 4.0. (Either
- may be loaded into high memory by using HIGHDRVR.SYS.)
-
- HIGHUMM.SYS A device driver that application programmers may use
- HIGHUMM.DOC to access high memory from their own programs. For
- a detailed specification of the software interface,
- see the information in the file HIGHUMM.DOC. (See
- LASTBYTE.DOC for information on using HIGHUMM.SYS with
- the shareware COMMAND.COM replacement called 4DOS.)
-
- HIGHTSR.EXE This program is used to load TSR's into high memory.
- Once the TSR has been loaded, this program completely
- removes itself from memory.
-
- HIGHINST.EXE Exactly like HIGHTSR, except used with the "INSTALL="
- command in a CONFIG.SYS file. (With DOS 4.01, this
- now makes it possible to load SHARE.EXE into high
- memory.)
-
- HIGHMARK.EXE Used to mark TSR's so that they may be removed from
- high memory at a later time. If possible, the mark
- is placed in Bank-Switch memory where it has no effect
- on the amount of memory available for TSR's and device
- drivers.
-
- HIGHUNDO.EXE Used to remove TSR's (and the associated mark) that
- have been marked with HIGHMARK.
-
- HIGHMEM.EXE Displays a map of high memory usage.
-
- HIGHAPND.EXE Used to enable/disable an extension of DOS conventional
- HIGHAPND.SYS memory beyond 640k up to 704k or even 736k, depending
- on your hardware configuration. If an EGA or VGA
- adapter is installed, HIGHAPND will also
- automatically disable/enable EGA/VGA hi-resolution
- graphics as necessary.
-
- HIGHBFRS.EXE Used with DOS 3.xx to put the DOS buffers (i.e., as
- in the "BUFFERS=" command of CONFIG.SYS) into High
- Memory.
-
- CLOCK.EXE A TSR to display the current time in the upper left-hand
- corner of the screen. Requires ANSI.SYS.
-
- COLS.40,80 Text files to be used to verify that ANSI.SYS has been
- installed and is operating properly.
