- Additional user note on the use of NEWPRN.SYS
-
- I am uploading NEWPRN.ARC to the boards on the chance that it might help
- someone else avoid the problems that I had printing to an HP Laserjet
- from a Compaq 386 model 130.
-
- We got a Compaq 386 and a Laserjet II at about the same time, after using
- AT's with the Laserjet+ for several years. I began to notice that it seemed
- to take a long time to print graphics from Ventura Publisher and other
- software. But we were experimenting with print spoolers and buffer boxes
- at the same time so I assumed the slow print problems resulted from those.
- After all I had a brand new 16 Mhz Compaq whose speed measured 19 on
- Norton's SI test (compared to 7 for an IBM AT) so how could that slow down
- printing on a brand new Laserjet!
-
- When other staff began complaining also about the print speed I decided to
- do a series of tests - soft font downloads and graphics prints from several
- software packages. The results were startling.
-
- Downloading a set of 5 HP soft fonts that we do commonly several times a day
- took about 57 seconds compared to 15-16 seconds on all of our other machines
- (AT's, XT's and a PS/2 model 80) that are linked to Laserjet+'s. What was
- most surprising was that another Compaq 386, model 70 in this case but
- otherwise comparably equipped to the model 130, downloaded the font set to
- a Laserjet+ in only 15 seconds. All these PC's except the PS/2 are running
- under PC-DOS 3.1.
-
- Then I called Hewlett Packard's Laserjet specialists and learned from them
- that if the problem was not in the cable it was possible that the parallel
- port was manufactured by AST, which had some problems with Laserjets.
-
- I switched cables and tried 3 different brand of parallel port boards and
- none improved the print speed with the Compaq 386-130.
-
- So I called Compaq and was told that I was only a customer and as such I was
- not allowed to speak with their technical support staff - only my dealer
- could call them - a policy of which I was unaware and which I find totally
- unacceptable.
-
- So I called my dealer and explained the problem. He said there were no
- technical notes on the subject from Compaq but that he would call them and
- check. After a day or two, I learned from the dealer that Compaq knew there
- was a problem and would send him a patch. He said he'd send the patch to me
- immediately. After another week, the dealer had still not received the patch
- so I asked him to call Compaq again which he did and a few days later he
- received a patch disk from Compaq and forwarded it to me.
-
- I copied NEWPRN.SYS to my boot disk root directory and added the line
- DRIVER=NEWPRN.SYS to my CONFIG.SYS file.
-
- The NEWPRN.SYS device driver worked!
-
- The font set download that took 57 seconds without the patch and 16 seconds
- on an AT now takes only 9-10 seconds on the Compaq model 130. A large
- 300x300 DPI graphics print that took 19 minutes without the patch now
- takes 3 minutes, about 50% faster than on an AT.
-
- I then tried the NEWPRN.SYS on an IBM AT and on the Compaq 386 model 70
- that had not had a specific printing problem. On the IBM AT, using the
- device driver seemed to have no effect (as the doc file from Compaq implied)
- but on the Compaq 386 model 70 the graphics printing speeded up by 10-15%
- so the test font download takes about 13 seconds.
-
- The reason for all this is unclear to me except that Compaq's doc file
- alludes to a timing problem when printing to very fast printers like
- Laserjets. It bothers me that Compaq did not notify their own dealers about
- the problem, will not speak directly to customers about it, and that
- novice Laserjet users may not even realize that they have a problem.
-
- For anyone using a Compaq 286/386 with a laser printer or perhaps any
- fast printer, I'd recommend installing the NEWPRN.SYS device driver and
- running timing tests with it and without it to see if using it makes a
- difference. For precise timing measures, I'd recommend downloading
- soft fonts from a DOS prompt using something like Gary Elfring's
- DOWNLOAD program and timing it with sonething like TIMEIT. If downloading
- a single font, it should be a large one so differences in time will be more
- obvious (or download several with a BATch file like the demo in FONTS.ARC.
-
- I'd be interested in hearing the experiences of others using Compaq's with
- Laserjets. You can leave messages for me on the following boards (where
- all the files mentioned here are also available). Please upload this ARC
- to other boards to help spread the word.
