  1.    Hewlett-Packard Announces HP LaserJet Series II Printer Upgrade Kit

  3. On August 1, 1990, Hewlett-Packard introduced the HP LaserJet Series II
  4. printer PCL 5/Resolution Enhancement technology Upgrade Kit, part number
  5. 5181-1940.  The price of the upgrade is $1200.00, not including
  6. installation which must be performed by an authorized HP service person.
  7. Check with your local HP dealer for installation cost.

  9. The Upgrade provides HP LaserJet III printer functionality, including
  10. Resolution Enhancement technology and PCL 5 printer language with
  11. integrated HP-GL/2. Also included are eight internal scalable typefaces.

  13. The upgraded HP LaserJet series II printer offers the following features:
  14.  
  15. -    Resolution Enhancement technology - improves print quality by
  16.      smoothing the jagged edges in text and graphics sometimes found in 300
  17.      dpi printing.
  18.  
  19. -    Scalable typefaces - features CG Times and Univers scalable
  20.      typeface families:
  21.      * Treatments include medium, bold, italic and bold italic.
  22.      * Typefaces are scalable from .25 to 999.75 point in .25 increments.
  23.      * Additional accessory typefaces are available from the
  24.        HP MasterType Library.

  26. -    Font compatibility--includes complete set of HP LaserJet IID/IIP
  27.      Courier and line printer bit-mapped fonts.  Works with existing HP
  28.      font cartridges, soft fonts, and scalable typefaces.

  30. -    PCL 5 printer language - features include multiple print directions on
  31.      the same page, white-on-black printing, HP-GL/2 graphics, arbitrary
  32.      rotation of text and graphics, patterned fonts, and mirrored text.

  34. -    Integrated HP-GL/2--PCL 5 printer language including HP-GL/2 vector
  35.      graphics commands.

  37. -    Accessory memory--use 1-Mbyte (P/N 33474B) and 2-Mbyte (P/N 33475B)  (HP
  38.      LaserJet IIP/III printer compatible) accessory memory.  With the
  39.      printer's 2 memory slots, 1, 2, 3 or 4 Mbytes of memory can be added
  40.      to the 1 Mbyte of memory already built into the printer.  Order the
  41.      "B" version memory boards for use with the HP LaserJet III printer.

  43. -    Warranty --  The parts included in the HP LaserJet Series II PCL 5/
  44.      Resolution Enhancement Upgrade kit are covered by warranty against
  45.      defects in materials and workmanship for 90 days from the date of
  46.      purchase or for the remainder of the HP LaserJet Series II printer
  47.      warranty, whichever period is longer. Installation must be performed
  48.      by an HP Authorized Service Technician.

  51. Technical specifications
  52.  
  53. There are several functional differences between the original HP LaserJet
  54. Series II printer and one which has been upgraded:
  55.  
  56. -    Internal memory - The upgraded HP LaserJet Series II printer
  57.      has one Mbyte (1024 Kbytes total; 720 Kbytes user) of internal memory
  58.      versus 512 Kbytes for the HP LaserJet Series II printer.
  59.  
  60. -    Optional Accessory Memory - The upgraded HP LaserJet Series II printer
  61.      requires HP LaserJet III printer accessory memory. Accessory memory
  62.      designed for the HP LaserJet Series II and HP LaserJet IID printers
  63.      will not work with the upgraded printer.

  65. -    Optional Memory Board Installation - The LaserJet series II bottom
  66.      cover prohibits user access to the front-most memory expansion slot in
  67.      the upgraded printer.  If two memory boards are to be installed, be
  68.      sure to have your service representative install one memory board in
  69.      the slot closest to the front of the printer when the upgrade is
  70.      installed.

  72. -    Optional I/O boards - Optional I/O boards that work in the HP
  73.      LaserJet Series II printer may not work in the upgraded printer.
  74.      Optional I/O boards that work in the HP LaserJet III printer will work
  75.      in the upgraded printer.

  77. -    Postscript - HP Jetscript (P/N 88141A) will not work in the
  78.      upgraded printer. The upgraded printer supports the HP Postscript
  79.      cartridge (P/N 33439P).

  81. -    AppleTalk - Once the HP LaserJet Series II printer has been upgraded,
  82.      accessories are available to use it with the Apple Macintosh.  Use the
  83.      AppleTalk interface (P/N 33416A), the HP Postscript cartridge and 1
  84.      Mbyte of memory.

  86. -    Print Alignment - To better center the printed image on the page, print
  87.      registration has been shifted slightly to the right as compared to the
  88.      LaserJet series II.  Please note this change particularly when using
  89.      preprinted forms.
