- INTRODUCTION: -------------------------------------------------------
-
- LJ2Fold is a print utility which was designed to work with the H.P.
- LaserJet Series ][ printer. It is a highly versatile program which
- will allow you to print either single or double sided documents, in
- landscape or portrait mode. Additionally you may ....
-
- * Specify a graphics border. (ASCII)
- * Specify header and/or footer text.
- * Specify page numbers.
- * Specify a cover sheet file.
- * Save defaults
-
- The unique feature of LJ2Fold, and the one which you will most likely
- use the most, is the ability to print a document so that it may be
- stapled in the center to form a book or pamphlet.
-
- Because LJ2Fold allows you to print your document in so many different
- ways, it will take some "getting used" to the program ESPECIALLY if you
- will be printing double sided documents.
-
- Each print mode is discussed later on in the documentation.
-
-
-
-
-

- THE TEXT DOCUMENT: --------------------------------------------------
-
- There are certain requirements for the document you will be printing.
- These requirements are:
-
- 1. Each line may not exceed 80 characters.
- 2. Each page must be 66 lines long.
- 3. There can be NO embedded control characters.
- (i.e. Bold printing, underline, italics, etc)
-
- In short, your document must be in pure ASCII format.
- Additionally, if your document contains horizontal tabs LJ2Fold will
- convert them to the proper number of spaces. Embeded form-feed
- characters are also trapped and converted.
-
- RUNNING LJ2FOLD: ----------------------------------------------------
-
- To execute LJ2Fold, simply type LJ2FOLD XXXXXX (where XXXXXX is the
- name of the document you wish to print) from the DOS prompt.
-
- Once LJ2Fold is loaded you will be shown a menu screen with 3 choices.
- They are [B]egin print, [C]hange options, and [Q]uit.
-
- You will also notice that in the upper window, you are notified as to
- which output tray to use (Top or Rear) to hold the printed documents.
-
- Additionally, the document name is also displayed in the upper left
- corner of the top window.
-
-
- PAGE REFERENCE: --------- IMPORTANT ! -------------------------------
- If you plan to use double sided print, you will be using the REAR exit
- tray on your printer to hold the printed documents.
-
- This can cause some confusion when feeding the pages back into the
- printer to print the second side.
-
- For reference this documentation will refer to the edge FARTHEST from
- the printer (when sitting in the rear exit tray) as the TOP of the
- page.
-
- If you are thoroughly confused, face the printer so that the rear exit
- tray is on your right, and the paper feed tray is on your left.
- As the paper exits the printer, the TOP of the form will be the edge
- farthest to the right when it is sitting in the exit tray.
-
- Additionally, we will refer to the part of the paper FEED tray that
- fits into the printer as the BOTTOM of the tray.
-
- (Just remember, this button turns on the air conditioner, this button
- destroys the world, don't get them mixed up!).
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- PRINT OPTIONS: ------------------------------------------------------
-
- BORDER: If you wish, you may choose to have a border printed on your
- document. To do this you must specify the graphics (ASCII) character
- to use. The default is 255 (No border).
-
- Supported graphics borders are 36, 42, 64, 128, 157, 159, 176, 177,
- 178, 201, 213, 214, 219, 232 and 233. Graphics characters 36 through
- 178 232 and 233 will simply print as a border around your text.
- No special formatting is done for the corners.
- With graphics characters 201 through 219 you will receive the following
- borders around your text.
-
- 201 = Double line border (top, bottom, sides)
- 213 = Double line on top and bottom, single on sides.
- 214 = Single line on top and bottom, double on sides.
- 219 = Thick line on top, bottom and sides.
-
- =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
-
- ORIENTATION: You may choose either [L]andscape or [P]ortrait.
- Landscape prints from left to right along the length of the paper
- (as if you had turned the paper on its side and feed it into the
- printer). Portrait prints from left to right along the width of the
- paper (like you would normally print).
-
- Landscape is what you would choose if you wanted to print a pamphlet or
- book which would be folded and stapled in the middle.
-
- Portrait is what you would choose if you wanted to put the pages in a
- 3-ring binder.
-
- =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
-
- OUTPUT: Specify port to which your LaserJet printer is attached.
- Either LPT1, LPT2, COM1: or COM2:
-
- =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
-
- SIDES: Specify either [S]ingle or [D]ouble sided printing.
-
- =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
-
- NUMBERS: Specify either [Y] to use page numbers or [N] to suppress
- page numbers.
-
- =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
-
- COPIES: You may specify up to 99 copies to be printed.
-
- =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
-
- HEADER: You may specify a text string which will be printed at the top
- of each page. This text is limited to 35 characters.
-
- =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
-
- FOOTER: You may specify a text string which will be printed at the
- bottom of each page. This text is limited to 35 characters.
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- INDICATE BLANK PAGE: Entering a -Y- in this field will cause the
- message ------ This Page Intentionally Blank ------ to be printed at
- the bottom of each blank page.
-
- =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
-
- COVER SHEET: LJ2Fold has the ability to print a cover sheet for each
- copy of the document that you specify. To create a cover sheet you
- must enter your cover sheet text into a separate file. If you select
- -Y- in the cover sheet field, you will be asked to specify the name of
- the file you wish to use as the cover sheet. In addition, you MUST
- specify a soft font to be used to print the cover sheet.
- NOTE: If you are printing in LANDSCAPE mode, the font you specify MUST
- BE A LANDSCAPE FONT. LJ2Fold will not rotate the font nor will it
- verify that the font is indeed a landscape font. There are several
- good utilities which will take a portrait font and create a landscape
- font for you.
-
- All cover sheets are printed first before the document. In this way
- you can experiment with your text and fonts before printing the actual
- document.
-
- =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
-
- SAVE SETTINGS: If you wish to save the default settings for future
- use respond -Y- to the message "Save the above settings".
- LJ2Fold will save the defaults to a file with the same name as your
- document but with a .LJ2 extension. Saving your defaults will enable
- LJ2Fold to automatically load the appropriate defaults the next time
- the document is printed. This can save considerable time and you don't
- have to remember which cover sheet, font, border, etc, went with which
- document.

-
- PRINTING: -----------------------------------------------------------
-
- The rest of this documentation deals with how to print your text file.
- Once the printing has started, pressing any key on the keyboard will
- abort the print process.
-
- We will start with single sided portrait which is the easiest and
- progress through double sided landscape which can be slightly more
- complicated.
-
- Keep in mind that the key to successful printing is ...
-
- () Using the correct exit tray.
- () Keeping the page oriented correctly for double sided print.
-
- REMEMBER ... When using the REAR exit tray, the TOP of the page is the
- edge FARTHEST from the printer.
-
- One final note in dealing with double sided print.
- The LaserJet Series ][ printer has a tendency to "curl" the paper as it
- moves through the printer. This can cause considerable problems when
- feeding the pages back through for printing on side two in portrait
- mode. If your printer curls the pages you will need to straighten the
- edges before loading them back into the paper feed bin.
-
-
- PORTRAIT PRINTING:- Please note that in portrait printing the graphics
- border that you have selected will print ONLY on the top and bottom of
- the page. This is due to the fact that the beginning and ending of
- each line of text is printed at the maximum margins allowable.
-
-
- SINGLE SIDED PORTRAIT:
-
- () Exit tray ... TOP
- () Options ..... Sides=S, Orientation=P
-
- This option will print your document just as you would normally.
- No special instructions are necessary.
- Border will print on top and bottom but not on the sides.
-
- DOUBLE SIDED PORTRAIT:
-
- () Exit tray ... REAR
- () Options ..... Sides=D, Orientation=P
-
- This option prints your document on two sides such that page 1 is
- on the front and page 2 is on the back. Page 3 is on the front of
- the next sheet and page 4 is on the back and so on.
-
- After the first side is printed, remove the pages from the exit
- tray. Place the pages into the paper feed tray in the following
- manner.
- () Face down.
- () TOP of the pages at the bottom of the paper feed
- tray.
-
- Be especially aware of paper "curl". This will cause your printer
- to misfeed if the curl is bad enough.
- Border will print on top and bottom but not on sides.
-
-
-
-
-
-
- LANDSCAPE PRINTING:- In Landscape printing the border you selected will
- be printed around the entire text.
-
- SINGLE SIDED LANDSCAPE:
-
- () Exit tray ... TOP
- () Options ..... Sides=S, Orientation=L
-
- This option will print pages 1 and 2 on the front of the first
- sheet, pages 3 and 4 on the front of the next sheet and so on.
-
- This option is fairly straight forward and requires no additional
- instructions.
- Border will print around entire text.
-
-
- DOUBLE SIDED LANDSCAPE:
-
- () Exit tray ... REAR
- () Options ..... Sides=D, Orientation=L
-
- This option is the hightlight of LJ2Fold and primarily why LJ2Fold
- was created. By using this option, you can fold the results in
- the middle, staple along the fold and produce your own book.
-
- Once you have successfully printed a document using this option,
- you will be able to see how it works, so we will skip the details
- at this point.
-
- Once the first side has been printed, remove the pages from the
- rear exit tray and place them in the paper feed tray as follows:
-
- () Face down.
- () TOP of the pages at the TOP of the paper feed tray.
-
- Paper curl should not be a problem.
- Border will print around entire text.

-
- TYPICAL PROBLEMS: ---------------------------------------------------
-
- Problem: Garbage characters in the output.
- Solution: Probably special control characters used by certain word
- processors. You should save your document in ASCII format
- preserving the page length. In PFS:Write this is
- accomplished by specifying "Print to File".
- In Displaywrite ]I[ use the "Block/Save/ASCII" command.
-
- Problem: Side two is printing up-side-down or backwards.
- Solution: Be sure that you are placing the pages in the paper feed
- tray with the correct edge at the bottom.
-
- Problem: Pages are printing out of sequence on side two.
- Solution: Be sure you are using the correct exit tray.
- If you are printing double sided documents and use the top
- exit tray, your pages will be out of sequence.
-
- Problem: The side borders are not lined up when printing double sided.
- Solution: The lines in your text file are longer than 80 characters or
- there are embedded printer control characters in some of the
- lines.
-
-
-
- ERROR CODES AND POSSIBLE MEANING: ------------------------------------
-
- 24 - Device Timeout. LJ2Fold is having trouble establishing a
- communications link with the printer.
- Verify that the printer is on and that you have specified the
- correct printer port in the LJ2Fold default settings.
-
- 25 - Device Fault. The printer has stopped printing for some
- reason. Verify that the printer is online and ready to
- print. This error code is typical if the paper has jammed
- somehow in the paper feed tray.
-
- 27 - Out of Paper. This error message is self explanatory.
-
- 57 - Device I/O Error. Some type of hardware error has occurred.
- This could be anything from the drive which LJ2Fold is using
- to the printer to which it is trying to print.
-
- 61 - Disk Full. This error message is self explanatory.
- LJ2Fold creates and uses a 5K file for each page of your
- document. If you are running LJ2Fold from diskette and have
- a very large document it is possible for the diskette to
- fill up. Try running LJ2Fold from your hard drive.
-
- 68 - Device Unavailable. You have selected an output device in
- the LJ2Fold default settings which is not currently available
- on your system. Check that all default values are correct.
-
- 69 - Communications Buffer Overflow. Probably due to a slow baud
- rate setting on your printer (if you are using the Serial
- port). Try changing the baud rate on your printer to 9600.
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- PROBLEM REPORTING: --------------------------------------------------
-
- Please feel free to contact us for any problems you are having with
- LJ2Fold. We can be contacted either by U.S. Mail, or by calling our
- 24 hour BBS at (405) 672-4564 and leaving us a message.
-
- When reporting a problem we would like to know ....
-
- () How the document was created. (Word processor, editor, etc)
- () What your options were (double sided landscape, etc)
- () What EXACTLY is happening.
- () How we can get in contact with you.
-
- If push comes to shove, we may also ask you to transmit a copy of the
- document to us for testing.
-
-
-
- ORDERING LJ2FOLD: ---------------------------------------------------
-
-
- If you would like to register your version of LJ2Fold please send
- either a check or money order along with the attached order form to:
-
- InoVision Software
- P.O. Box 15363
- Del City, Oklahoma - 73155
-
-
-
- Why register? Primarily because it will enable you to specify headings
- and footers and to use the rest of the supported graphics characters,
- not to mention free upgrades when available.
-
- Second (and just as important), registration tells us that people are
- using the software and it is worth the effort to make updates and
- enhancements to the program. Basically the approach is "why fool with
- it if nobody is going to use it". So your support is important not
- only to us, but to all Shareware authors.
-
-
-
-
-
- CLOSING COMMENTS: ---------------------------------------------------
-
- The best way to learn to use LJ2Fold is to begin with small (8 pages or
- less) documents and then run LJ2Fold through its paces. Single sided
- printing is the easiest and you should have no problems keeping things
- straight. However, double sided printing is another matter.
- Begin by using small documents to get the "feel" of what to do.
- Use the rear exit tray and keep the pages oriented correctly when
- placing them back into the paper feed tray and you should have no
- problems.
-
- We want to thank you for trying LJ2Fold. We strive to produce quality
- software at afordable prices. We hope you will enjoy using LJ2Fold and
- will feel free to contact us if you have any problems or suggestions
- for enhancements.
