-
- 1.2. What you should know
-
-
- 1.2.1 Graphic Program User
-
- If you want to use a graphic program we recommend to configure
- HPSCREEN in the following way:
-
- BEFORE starting the graphic program from the DOS level call the
- HPSCREEN menu by the "hot key", configure HPSCREEN, leave the
- HPSCREEN menu and then start your application program.
-
- If you call the HPSCREEN menu DURING a graphic program session, it
- may occur that your screen will not be restored properly after
- leaving the HPSCREEN menu.
-
-
- 1.2.2. Windows User
-
- If you want to use the "hot key" menu during the window session, you
- have to start HPSCREEN with the following parameter on the
- commandline:
-
- HPSCREEN /WIN ─┘
-
- Without this parameter you cannot popup HPSCREEN during a window
- session. If you have installed HPSCREEN with the /WIN parameter you
- can popup while running a window application but you MAY NOT use the
- mouse while the "hot key" menu is active! If you do so, first the
- HPSCREEN menu will be destroyed, then the top of your window screen
- will also be destroyed. Your mouse pointer will also shown twice.
-
-
- 1.2.3. DOS 4.0
-
- DOS 4.0 stores all keystrokes during a screendump operation.
- Therefore you can not cancel the screendump by <ESC>.
-
-
- 1.2.4. 43 Row Mode
-
- HPSCREEN does not support the 43 row mode. Do not use the "hot key"
- menu.
-
-
- 1.2.5 Requirements
-
- To use HPSCREEN you need a HP Vectra, IBM PC/XT/AT/PS2 or 100%
- compatible computers, DOS version 2.0 or later.
-
-
- 1.2.6. Printer Mode
-
- Some HP printers understand two types of printer control languages
- (PCL resp. Alternate Mode). HPSCREEN supports ONLY the PCL mode.
- Therefore you have to configure your printer as a PCL printer. Please
- refer to your printer manual.
-
- ════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
-
- H P S C R E E N 3.0 page 5
- ════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
-
-
-
- 1.2.7. DOS GRAPHICS Command Conflict
-
- The HPSCREEN utility replaces the function of the DOS GRAPHICS
- command. The GRAPHICS command does not work on the HP printers.
- If the GRAPHICS command is executed after HPSCREEN utility is
- loaded, it will disable the utility.
-
-
-
-
- 2. INSTALLATION
-
-
- 2.1. Working copy
-
- First make a working copy of the HPSCREEN disk supplied. For help,
- follow the instructions in your DOS manual. Make sure you work only
- with the working copy.
-
-
-
- 2.2. Installing HPSCREEN
-
- HPSCREEN disk contains an installation program which executes all the
- required installation operations.
-
-
-
- 2.2.1. Installation on a flexible disk
-
- - Insert the HPSCREEN disk in drive A:
- - Type A: and press <Enter>
- - Type Install and press <Enter>
- - Follow the instructions of the installation program
-
- The installation program copies HPSCREEN.EXE and PALETTE.EXE into the
- subdirectory of your choice. The installation program also provides
- the possibility to print the manual on every HP printer in PCL mode.
-
-
-
-
- 2.2.2. Installation on the hard disk
-
- We recommend to use a subdirectory for HPSCREEN ; i.e.,
- C:\HPSCREEN, on the hard disk.
-
- - Insert the HPSCREEN disk in drive A:
- - Type A: and press <Enter>
- - Type Install and press <Enter>
- - Follow the instructions of the installation program
-
- The installation program copies HPSCREEN.EXE and PALETTE.EXE into the
- desired subdirectory. The installation program also provides the
- possibility to print the manual on every HP printer in PCL mode.

-
- 3. OPERATION
-
-
-
- 3.1 Starting HPSCREEN
-
- Start HPSCREEN by typing in at the DOS level:
-
- HPSCREEN [configurationfile] [/WIN] ─┘
-
- The parameters in square brackets [] are optional.
-
- Option Explanation
-
- configuration- is a file created by the function
- file "Save Configuration" (refer to 4.19. to 4.21.).
- The parameters saved in this file are transferred
- to HPSCREEN. HPSCREEN is now configured as the
- configuration file.
-
- The default filename is HPSCREEN.CFG. HPSCREEN
- automatically checks the current directory for
- this file and loads it.
-
-
- /WIN this option is necessary to popup the HPSCREEN menu
- during a window session. Please refer to 1.2.2.
-
-
-
-
- Example 1
-
-
- HPSCREEN ─┘
- HPSCREEN scans in the current directory for the file HPSCREEN.CFG.
- If the file exists the saved configuration in HPSCREEN will be
- tranferred to HPSCREEN.
-
-
-
- Example 2
-
-
- HPSCREEN MY-CONF.CFG ─┘
- HPSCREEN loads the configuration of the file MY-CONF.CFG.

-
-
- 3.2. Screendump
-
- To start the screendump press
-
- <Shift PrtSc> or <PrtSc> on IBM PS2 systems.
-
- HPSCREEN will become active and makes a short beep to announce that
- it will start the screendump. HPSCREEN will read the data from the
- screen, will process it and then send the data to the printer.
-
- If you make a full scale screendump of a graphic screen on a LaserJet
- printer it may take time up to 20 minutes to transfer all the data.
-
- Because HPSCREEN has to calculate before printing, it may happen that
- the data transfer starts after some seconds (1 to 5).
-
-
- Press the <Esc> key on your computer if you wish to stop your
- printer before your screen image is completly printed. The Esc key
- stops the utility from sending screen data to your printer. Printing
- will stop when the data that has already been sent is finished
- printing.

- 4. CONTROLLING HPSCREEN
-
- The data sent to the printer depends on the configuration of
- HPSCREEN. To control the configuration, HPSCREEN provides a "Hot
- Key" menu. The possibility to configure HPSCREEN allows you to
- design your hardcopy.
-
-
- 4.1. Main Menu
-
- The menu for controlling HPSCREEN can be invoked by simultaneously
- pressing the keys
-
- <ALT> and <+> (plus key in the numeric keyblock)
-
- You may not call the HPSCREEN menu during the period when your
- software draws its screen contents. Wait until your screen is drawn.
-
- It is recommended to invoke the menu only at the DOS level.

-
-
-
- 4.5. Submenu Display Mode
-
- Most of the display adaptors can identify different display modes,
- text modes and graphics modes e.g.. If you have a VGA display
- adaptor, HPSCREEN automatically detects the right display mode for
- generating the printout. Usually this also works for the other
- display adaptors.
-
- But for technical reasons there are a few cases where HPSCREEN is not
- able to find the right display mode. In these cases, you can enter
- the correct mode manually.
-
- If your printout is wrong because of the above reason it is necessary
- to leave your application program, and call the HPSCREEN menu at the
- DOS level, then change the display mode to the right one, then
- restart your application program and to start the screendump again.
-
- Please refer to section 7. There are the different display modes
- explained.
-
- Option │Explanation
- ───────────────┼────────────────────────────────────────────────────

- 4.7. Submenu Aspect Ratio
-
- All graphics consist of a pattern of pixels. The pixel size of the
- screen (except 3 VGA modes) are different compared to the pixel size
- of the HP printers. If you convert each pixel one to one, you obtain
- a different size and shape of the graphic. As a result, graphics in
- the pixel-for-pixel (Not Rescaled) mode will be shown about 20%
- smaller (in the vertical axis) on the HP printer.
-
- Option │Explanation
- ───────────────┼────────────────────────────────────────────────────
- No Rescaling │The graphics pixels are printed one to one.
- (Pixel 1:1) │Circles may be distorted into ellipses.
- │
- │
- Rescaling │The varying graphics resolutions of the

- The LaserJet printers print with 10 cpi, meaning that only 77
- characters per line can be printed. You have the option, with 10.5
- cpi, of slightly lessening characters spacing so that 80 characters
- can be printed per line.
-
- Option │Explanation
- ───────────────┼────────────────────────────────────────────────────
- Default │The hardcopy is printed using the current
- │character spacing.
- │
- 10.5 cpi │Any settings in the printer are retained.
- │Proportional typefaces are then printed in
- │10.5 cpi spacing.
-
-
- Limitations:
- The line draw symbols have been conceived for character spacing 10
- cpi. Because of this, displacements may arise if other cpi values
- are used.

-
- 4.17. Submenu Hardcopy Eject
-
- Use Hardcopy Eject after printing to advance paper to a clean page or
- to continue printing on the same page. Using Hardcopy Eject No
- allows you to print multiple screens on one page.
-
- Option │Explanation
- ───────────────┼────────────────────────────────────────────────────
- Yes │Paper is ejected after a formfeed command is
- │performed.
- │
- No │Paper remains in the LaserJet.
-
-
-
- 4.18. Submenu Hardcopy Copies
-
- Use the menu "Hardcopy Copies" to specify how many copies of each
- page you want your printer to print. After you select "Hardcopy
- Copies" you are asked for a number. The maximum value is "99".
-
- "Hardcopy Copies" turns your laser printer into a combination of
- printer and copy machine. Regardless of how long it takes to
- generate the first page of printed output, subsequent copies of
- the same page will be printed at the printer's maximum speed.

- 5. Display Specials
-
-
- 5.1. General
-
- There are a number of compatible display adaptors on the market.
- Not all compatibles are "true compatible". Therefore special modes
- of some display adaptors are not supported e.g. (576 x 768 dots).
-
-
-
- 5.2. VGA
-
- There are no known problems.
-
-
-
- 5.3. EGA and CGA
-
- Most of the display adaptors can identify different display modes,
- e.g. text modes and graphics modes. If you have a VGA display adaptor
- HPSCREEN detects automatically the right display mode for generating
- the printout. Usually this works also for the other display adaptors.
-
- For technical reasons there are a few cases where HPSCREEN is not
- able to identify the correct display mode. In such cases, you can
- manually enter the correct HPSCREEN mode.
-
-
-
- 5.4. Hercules
-
- The Hercules Graphics Card can handle two display pages (0 and 1).
- For technical reasons it is not possible to identify which page will
- be displayed. If you do not get the expected result on your
- printer, you have to enter which page is active on the HPSCREEN menu.
- Select "mode 4: graphics 720 x 348, page 0" to print page 0 and
- "mode 5: graphics 720 x 348, page 1" to print page 1.

-
-
- 6.1. General
-
- - You can not print landscape text and graphics on the same page.
- - You can not use the "Print Width" and "Print Height" commands
- for text screendumps.
- - The default print size varies with the resolution of the printer.
- - A fullscale printout takes a lot of time on a LaserJet printer.
- - Cartridges are not supported
- - If you get cancelled printouts using a parallel port, the following
- DOS command may be helpful:
-
- MODE LPT1:,,P ─┘
-
-
-
- 6.2. LaserJet
-
- - No PC8 Symbolset. Therefore HPSCREEN uses characters like (|-+) to
- emulate the linedrawsymbols.
- - Due to the 56 K Byte memory limitation it is not possible to print
- graphics printouts bigger than about 32 cm². The printer will show
- printer error 20 (overflow).
-
-
- 6.3. LaserJet+ and LaserJet 500+
-
- - No PC8 Symbolset. Therefore HPSCREEN uses characters like (|-+) to
- emulate the linedrawsymbols.

- 7.3. Ordered Dithering
-
- HPSCREEN prints different colors by using the "Ordered Dithering"
- algorithm. This algorithm allows to print colors in gray shades
- on black and white printers and to print color shades on color
- printers. This algorithm is fast and does not slow down the
- resolution of printer.
-
-
- 7.4. Funny Patterns
-
- Some applications mix screen colors to generate more than the true
- screen colors. HPSCREEN uses the above mentioned algorithm to
- generate more than the true printer colors which mixes also printer
- colors to create different color shades. As a result you will get
- unpredictable patterns (funny patterns).
-
-
-
- 8. PALETTE
-
- The PaintJet is able to print its 330 different colors using
- the selftest. You start the selftest by starting the printer and
- at the same time pressing the key <LF> (Linefeed).
-
- Because the PaintJet XL does not provide this feature, the
- program PALETTE is provided on the HPSCREEN disk. This utility
- produces the same output on the PaintJet, PaintJet XL as the selftest
- mentioned above.
-
- !!
- This utility is written for the PaintJet /XL ONLY! If you use
- PALETTE with other printers you will get strange output on the
- printer or your system may hang up.
