- INTRODUCTION
- :prooff

- The !FONTASTIC! print program, IHSPRINT, was designed
- to print standard IBM PC/DOS text files which were
- generated via a text editor (e.g., EDLIN,
- Professional Editor, etc) or any of the popular
- word processing systems. While !FONTASTIC! provides
- support for extensive printing features, the design
- and implementation of your word processor or text
- editor may limit easy access to these functions.
- In this section we will give you guidelines on how
- to deal with two areas which may have limitations
- imposed by your current text generating software.

- LIMITED ACCESS TO FULL
- ASCII CHARACTER SET
- :font 0
- :space 2
- While the IBM/PC has a character definition for all
- 255 ASCII codes, many word processors do not allow
- you to enter all of those characters into your
- text. It is frustrating to many users who require
- some math symbols or foreign language characters
- but their software will not permit them to enter
- those characters into their text files during the
- editing process. Even if you only wish to add
- special printer control codes into your text (to
- take advantage of the power of the printer), entry
- of these characters is often prohibited or at best
- requires special "patches" to the word processor
- software.

- LIMITED ACCESS TO FULL
- ASCII CHARACTER SET
- (CONT'T)
- :font 0
- :space 2
- :ccon
- With !FONTASTIC!, you may circumvent these
- :ccoff
- limitations by letting the IHSPRINT program invoke
- those special printer functions (no more memorizing
- of codes !!). IHSPRINT commands appear to be
- additional text to the word-processor and will
- eliminate the need for imbedding special control
- codes within the text.
-
- Access to those "special" characters (math symbols,
- etc...) is now easily achieved because the IHSFONT
- character editor allows you to define those special
- symbols at ANY character cell within the ASCII set.
- Thus you can easily define the special math symbol
- within the ASCII range supported by your word
- processor software.
-
- :LOAD2 NORMAL.FNT
- :FONT 2
- :dson
- For example, you might wish to print the "ô"
- character (ASCII position 147). With IHSFONT, you
- can create the "ô" character and save it at ASCII
- position 36. That position is normally occupied by
- the character "$", a symbol most word processors
- will allow to be entered into the text file. Thus,
- wherever you want the "ô" symbol to appear within
- your text, you use the "$" symbol and print the
- line using the alternate font capabilities of
- IHSPRINT.

- PECULIARITIES IN TEXT FILES
- :font 0
- :space 2
- Text files generated by most editors are totally
- compatible with FONTASTIC. However, some word
- processors generate text files which contain
- special control characters which have meaning only
- to the print routines of the particular word
- processor package. Problems arise in attempting to
- print those files via IHSPRINT. Unpredictable
- results may occur.

- If you are unsure whether or not your specific
- word-processor produces such "special" files, refer
- to you user's manual or contact the authors of the
- package. Many systems allow you to convert these
- special files to standard DOS files by directing
- the word processor to 'print' to a diskette file
- rather than the printer. This "converted" text
- file should be in the correct form for use by
- IHSPRINT.
-
- Because of the large variety of word-processors on
- the market, !FONTASTIC! has been evaluated with only
- the more popular systems. Detailed procedures for
- each of those systems are listed in the following
- pages. If your word processing system is not
- listed and you are unsure as to the correct
- procedure for creating a DOS text file, contact
- your local word processor dealer for assistance.
- If you cannot get satisfactory results in this
- manner, send 1) an example of a text file printed
- with IHSPRINT, 2) a copy of that same file printed
- with the word processor, 3) a diskette containing
- the actual file which you are attempting to print,
- and 4) the name of the word processor to:
-
- IHS Systems

- San Jose, Ca. 95118
-
- Please include your name and phone number and we
- will make every effort to resolve the problem and
- give you correct procedures to access the full
- power of FONTASTIC. =Under no circumstances should
- you include a copy of your word processor.=

- EASYWRITER 1.1
- :font 0
- :space 2
- :CCON
- _=Note=_: EASYWRITER 1.0 does not produce files
- compatible with DOS text files and is therefore not
- supported by FONTASTIC.
-
- The following procedure will satisfactorily produce
- a DOS text file which can be printed by IHSPRINT:
-
- 1) Generate your text as usual via
- EASYWRITER 1.1. Insert the appropriate
- !FONTASTIC! commands and utilize the
- features of EASYWRITER (e.g.,
- justification, etc) to create your
- document.
-
- 2) Convert your EASYWRITER 1.1 text file to
- a standard text file with the "TRANSFER"
- program provided with EASYWRITER. This
- BASIC program is invoked by entering
- BASICA TRANSFER to a DOS prompt (i.e., A>
- BASICA TRANSFER).
-
- 3) Print the converted file with IHSPRINT.

- WORDSTAR
- :font 0
- :space 2
- The following procedure will satisfactorily produce
- a DOS text file which can be printed by IHSPRINT:
-
- 1) Generate text in normal fashion.
-
- 2) Use the WORDSTAR "PRINT" command to print
- to diskette.
-
- 3) Print the resultant file using IHSPRINT.
