- I. What is AutoFont Support?
- =====================================================================
-
- Introduced at the same time as the HP LaserJet III printer, the
- AutoFont Support program provides a new industry standard for
- integrating fonts into application software. Beginning in June 1990,
- HP's MasterType Library of cartridges and softfonts (bitmapped and
- scalable) will include AutoFont Support files (TFM's). Support files
- for discontinued font products such as the HP 92286A, B, C,...Z font
- cartridges will be available for downloading from the HP forum on
- CompuServe. TFM files for the following current HP font cartridges
- will also be available on the HP forum; ProCollection, Global Text,
- Great Start, International, TextEquations, Bar Codes & More, Forms
- Etc., Persuasive Presentations, Polished Worksheets, the Microsoft
- Cartridge, and the WordPerfect Cartridge.
-
- WHAT IS AUTOFONT SUPPORT? In the past, when HP introduced new font
- products for the HP LaserJet printer family, customers had to obtain
- specific "font drivers" from a software vendor, often at additional
- expense. This often resulted in a lag between purchase and actual use
- with software and the HP LaserJet printer. Autofont Support provides a
- way to automatically and instantly use newly purchased fonts with your
- application software and printer. Supported printers include the HP
- LaserJet III, LaserJet series II, LaserJet IIP, LaserJet IID, LaserJet
- 2000, LaserJet PLUS, and LaserJet 500 PLUS.
-
- AutoFont Support files contain character information that software
- packages need to correctly place text on the page. An easy-to-use
- utility is also included that allows installation of AutoFont Support
- files on your hard disk. With application software that has
- implemented AutoFont Support, the user can instruct the software (via
- an external utility or from within the application) to read the
- AutoFont Support file. This enables application software to
- automatically extract necessary character information from the AutoFont
- Support files and create the "font driver" on the fly. AutoFont
- Support means instant and automatic use of new fonts with software.
-
- WHO IS IMPLEMENTING AUTOFONT SUPPORT? HP is taking a leadership role
- in the AutoFont Support program: the program is open to all software,
- font, printer language, and printer manufacturers in the industry. The
- goal is to make AutoFont Support an open industry wide standard. HP has
- been working with leading software and font vendors during the last
- year to ensure a successful program. Beginning in June 1990, AutoFont
- Support will be included with all current font accessory products in
- the HP MasterType Library.
-
- The following software and font vendors have publicly committed their
- intentions to implement AutoFont Support across all or part of their
- product line.
-
- AGFA Compugraphic Microsoft
- Avatar Oberon Systems
- Bitstream QuickSoft
- Font Factory Roxxolid
- FormMaker SAS
- Genoa Technologies SoftCraft
- Indigo Software SWFTE Int'l
- Insight VS Software
- LaserGo WordPerfect
- Mephistopheles WordStar
- Micrologic Xyquest
-
- Contact your software vendor to see if their software has implemented
- AutoFont Support.
-
-
- =====================================================================
- II. Do You Need AutoFont Support Files?
- =====================================================================
-
- You do not need AutoFont Support files (TFM's) unless all of the
- following conditions are true:
-
- YOU HAVE THE FONT PRODUCT. TFM files contain information about the
- characters in the font (metrics) and not the font itself. If you do
- not have the font product, the support files are of no use.
-
- YOUR SOFTWARE HAS IMPLEMENTED AUTOFONT SUPPORT. AutoFont Support
- consists of two components; TFM files for the appropriate font product,
- and an AutoFont Support file reader that must be incorporated in the
- application by the software manufacturer. Although many major software
- manufacturers have committed to support the AutoFont Support
- technology, it will take some time for many of them to finish software
- updates that implement this method of font support. Contact your
- software vendor to find out if their software will use AutoFont Support
- files. If your application does not implement AutoFont Support, you
- cannot use the TFM files and should request a printer driver for the
- font product from your software manufacturer.
-
- YOUR SOFTWARE DOES NOT HAVE A PRINTER DRIVER FOR THE FONT PRODUCT. If
- your software already has a printer driver for the font product, use it
- instead of the AutoFont Support files as the driver contains the
- necessary information to use the font. If you are uncertain as to
- driver support for a font product, check your software's font/cartridge
- selection screen or contact your software manufacturer.
-
-
- =====================================================================
- III. AutoFont Support Requirements and Overview
- =====================================================================
-
- Before you install AutoFont Support files you must have:
- - the font product(s) (see the list in Section I)
- - an application that implements AutoFont Support and does not
- already have a printer driver for the font product (see Section II)
- - the AutoFont Support files for the font product. Note that
- current HP font products shipped after June 1990 will include
- AutoFont Support files. TFM files for the discontinued and current
- font products listed in Section I will be available on CompuServe.
- - the AutoFont Support Installer AUTOFONT.EXE
-
- The batch file AFSDISK.BAT which is included with each set of TFM files
- and the installer AUTOFONT.EXE which accompanies this file make TFM
- installation a straightforward process--if the above conditions have
- been met, you may proceed to Section IV AutoFont Support File
- Installation. The remaining paragraphs in this section are intended to
- give an overview to those users who are interested in more details of
- AutoFont implementation.
-
- AutoFont Support consists of two components; AutoFont Support files and
- an AutoFont Support file reader that is incorporated in the application
- software by the software manufacturer.
-
- AutoFont Support provides an industry standard font metric
- specification that uses the Tagged Font Metric (TFM) file. TFM files
- contain typeface and character metrics along with symbol set, kerning
- and other information that an application might use to properly select
- and use the font. The AutoFont support files for a given font product
- consist of TFM files along with additional files (ie AFS.0, GLUE.$$$).
- The GLUE.$$$ file contains information regarding the location and other
- characteristics of the font, the other files are used during the
- installation process.
-
- The AutoFont Support Installer (AUTOFONT.EXE) installs the TFM files
- into the \AUTOFONT subdirectory of your hard disk (usually C:\AUTOFONT)
- and uses the product specific GLUE.$$$ file to update your GLUE.TXT
- file each time you install additional TFM files. Once the TFM files
- have been installed, software that incorporates AutoFont Support can
- access the metric information and use it to properly space and format
- the text. The actual implementation of AutoFont Support will vary with
- software manufacturers, some may access the TFM data via an external
- utility while others may do it within the application.
-
-
- =====================================================================
- IV. Installing AutoFont Support Files
- =====================================================================
-
- Once the requirements listed in Section III have been met, you are
- ready to install the AutoFont Support files. Because the AutoFont
- Support Installer was designed to work with the AutoFont support files
- that ship with HP font products after June 1990, the installer expects
- to find the support files in a specific directory format on a diskette.
- Specifically, the file AFS.0 must be located in the root directory of
- the diskette and the rest of the files must be in a subdirectory on the
- diskette named \AUTOFONT. The batch file AFSDISK.BAT (included with
- each set of TFM files) will create the proper subdirectory on the
- diskette and copy the appropriate files for you automatically. Note
- that the AutoFont Support files for each font product must be copied
- onto separate diskettes.
-
- Before you begin you will need one blank, formatted diskette for each
- set of TFM files you intend to install, plus one additional diskette
- for the AutoFont Support Installer program.
-
- To copy the support files to diskette:
-
- 1) Make a temporary subdirectory on your hard disk (ie C:\TEMP) and
- change to that directory.
-
- 2) Copy one of the archived TFM files to the temporary subdirectory.
-
- 3) Unarchive the TFM file.
-
- 4) Type AFSDISK and press <Enter>. Follow the instructions on the
- screen. You will be prompted to put a blank, formatted disk in
- Drive A:, the TFM files will automatically be copied to this disk.
-
- 5) After AFSDISK has copied the files, delete all of the files in the
- temporary subdirectory.
-
- 6) If you have additional TFM files to transfer, repeat steps 2 through
- 5. Otherwise, proceed to the installation instructions below.
-
-
- To install the AutoFont Support files:
-
- 1) Copy the file AUTOFONT.EXE to a diskette and label it "AutoFont
- Support Installer".
-
- 2) Insert the AutoFont Support Installer disk into drive A:
-
- 3) Type A:AUTOFONT and press <Enter>.
-
- 4) Answer the questions as they appear on the screen. When you are
- prompted to "Insert AutoFont Support Metrics #1 diskette...", insert
- one of the TFM file diskettes you prepared above. The AutoFont
- Support Installer will copy the TFM and related files into a
- directory on your hard disk called \AUTOFONT. (It will make the
- directory if one is not already there.)
-
- 5) Repeat steps 2 through 4 for each set of AutoFont Support files you
- wish to install.
-
-
- Once the AutoFont Support files have been installed, you can run your
- software's printer update program which will allow your software to
- access the information in the \AUTOFONT directory and add the fonts to
- its menus. Read your software's user manual for instructions on
- running your software's printer update program or contact your software
- vendor for assistance.
-
- Do not delete the AutoFont Support files after updating your software's
- printer files. Some software packages access the AutoFont Support files
- directly when formatting text.
