  7.                             INTRODUCTION

  9. 4PRINT is a utility for the HP LaserJet, Series II, Series II-D,
  10. DeskJet and close compatibles which will print multiple copies of
  11. multiple ASCII files, four 66-line pages per sheet of paper (plus
  12. title lines).  Special handling for wide documents and spreadsheets,
  13. proportional fonts and IBM-sized binders is included.  The program is
  14. extremely easy to use, and has a comprehensive set of options for
  15. formatting and operations control.

  34. If 4PRINT.DOC is missing:
  35.  
  36. The file 4PRINT.DOC and the files relating to the optional provided
  37. soft font may be missing from this collection.  If so, you need to
  38. download a separate file (called 4PRDOC.ARC on CompuServe and
  39. something like 4PDOCnnn.ARC or 4PDOCnnn.ZIP on local BBS's) in order
  40. to get full value out of the program.

  42. You can "wing it" by using the online help information to get started
  43. (also see QUICK START below), but the forty page manual provides
  44. information on getting the most out of the program's many features,
  45. and contains invaluable information which will help you use your
  46. laser printer or DeskJet more effectively with 4PRINT or any other
  47. program.

  49. If you can't obtain 4PRINT.DOC from your local source, Korenthal
  50. Associates offers a 4PRINT evaluation package (including full
  51. documentation on disk) for $10 plus shipping and handling.  Call
  52. (212) 242-1790 for details.  Better yet, try the product a few times
  53. and if you like it, order the retail version which includes complete
  54. printed documentation in an IBM-sized binder.

  57. If 4PRINT.EXE is missing:
  58.  
  59. Somehow, you've obtained the second part of the 4PRINT archive
  60. without getting the program itself.  You need to get 4PRINT.ARC (or
  61. 4PRNTnnn.ARC or 4PRNTnnn.ZIP on BBS's) before you can run the
  62. program.  Also, read the paragraph above describing how to get the
  63. full system directly from Korenthal Associates.

  66.                             QUICK START
  67.  
  68. Type the following at the DOS prompt:

  72. The program will provide information on how to use most of its
  73. options.  4PRINT is a very "rich" program, though, so we suggest you
  74. print and read the User's Guide first in order to enjoy the full
  75. benefits of 4PRINT's advanced features.

  77. If you don't have the User's Guide (4PRINT.DOC), the best thing to do
  78. first is to 4PRINT any ASCII file single sided to get a feel for the
  79. program.  To print this file, for instance, type:

  83. Next, you might try double sided printing:

  87. The program will pause between passes and ask you to reinsert the
  88. paper in the paper tray (or manually if you include the -m switch) to
  89. print the reverse side.

  92.                     PRINTING THE DOCUMENTATION

  94. If you do have 4PRINT.DOC, you can use 4PRINT itself to print the
  95. User's Guide (single-sided, with no header and no scan pass) as
  96. follows:

  100. Note that 4PRINT will print on both sides of the paper if you
  101. eliminate the -s option, but we don't recommend using this feature
  102. with a large file on a LaserJet or Series II until you've read the
  103. documentation.  If you have a II-D, you can get double sided
  104. documentation with no user intervention like this:

  108. If you use some other means to print the documentation full-sized,
  109. please make sure that your printer is set up for 66 lines per page.

  112.                             DESKJET USERS
  113.  
  114. 4PRINT Version 3 supports many additional HP-compatible printers,
  115. including the HP DeskJet.  No special font is required to use 4PRINT
  116. with the DeskJet, but your printer must be equipped with the optional
  117. landscape cartridge.

  120.   LASERJET PLUS USERS (AND THOSE WISHING TO PRINT IN LETTER GOTHIC FONT)
  121.  
  122. The HP LaserJet+ does not provide the landscape line printer font
  123. required by 4PRINT.  However, by "uploading" the soft font supplied
  124. in this archive (or in 4PRDOC.ARC, as described above) you can use a
  125. LaserJet+ (or other compatible without landscape line printer font)
  126. with no 4PRINT modifications or special parameters required.

  128. This font is actually a small Letter Gothic font, and for many purposes is
  129. preferable to the internal line printer font supplied with the Series II.
  130. Therefore, you may want to load the soft font even if you already have a
  131. line printer font.

  133. Note that this soft font is supplied on a shareware basis from Elfring
  134. Soft Fonts.  If you use the font beyond a fifteen day evaluation period,
  135. you must register with Elfring for a fee of $10.  Full information from
  136. Elfring may be found in the file LINEPRNT.DOC, along with details about
  137. other fonts and software which will enable you to extend the usefulness
  138. of your laser printer.

  140. If you already have font upload software, simply upload the LP085R16.USL
  141. file as a permanent font using any convenient font number.  4PRINT will
  142. automatically select this font for each run until your printer is turned
  143. off.

  145. If you don't have upload software, issue the following command (on the
  146. DOS command line or as part of a batch file) to upload the soft font:

  148.     C>copy/b ID1000+LP085R16.USL+ID1000+PERM LPT1:     (or LPT2:)

  150. The soft font will be uploaded as permanent font #1000, and 4PRINT will
  151. automatically select this font until the printer is turned off.
