- SEAGATE 251-1 DRIVE WARNING
- ---------------------------
-
-
- If you have a Seagate 251-1 40MB hard drive, check that it has
- the advertised 28mS seek time, both when it's cold and when it's
- hot - ie after it's been on for an hour or two. Seagate
- recommends the CORE test version 2.7.
-
- My 251-1 had a 28mS average seek time when cold, but after 10
- minutes or so the average seek time was up to 33mS, and after an
- hour or so was up to 37mS. Obviously it was affected by heat.
- Seagate sent me a replacement unit (direct) but that unit was
- also temperature sensitive. A second replacement arrived and
- this one does have 28mS average seek time when cold and when hot.
-
- Seagate said some 40mS 251 drives were accidentally labeled as
- 28mS 251-1 drives and it seems they don't have a reliable method
- to know which are which until you put it on-line and test it.
-
- If you test your drive and don't end up with a average seek time
- of around 28mS (+/- a couple of mS), I suggest you call Seagate
- and request a replacement. Seagate's Toll Free number is
- 1-800-468-3472.

- JG>I have a ST251-1 with a seek time of 28ms. However when I run CORE2.8
- JG>I get 34 ms. I spoke to the company that sold me the drive and they
- JG>said it was because I have TWO logical drives due to DOS.
- JG>Is this true?
-
- Actually, no. I have an IBM-XT with a Micropolis 1325 85mb drive. It
- is split into two drives using a WD controller. Coretest 2.7 reports
- the seek time at 20ms. The same drive in an AT clone is reported at
- 29ms. When the controller splits the drive into to logical drives in
- the XT type machine, Coretest actually thinks you have a drive with
- half as many cylinders, so naturally the average seek time is less,
- because you don't have as far to go. I don't know what the seek time
- of a ST251-1 is supposed to be, but it should be less if split in an
- XT type machine.

- To anyone looking for a 40MB drive I found an unbeatable price on
- the Seagate ST251-1 for $325.00 brand new. The company is Fast Micro
- located in Phoenix Arizona. They accept all credit cards, charge no tax
- outside of Arizona and ship UPS. I've done business with them before
- and had no problems. A note to mention however is that they charge 3%
- for cover handling and an additional 5% for the American Express card.
- There is no charge for Mastercard and Visa. Checks and money orders
- also excepted.
-
- Fast Micro 1 800 441-3278

-
- They have other drives as well, just ask.
-
- It's amazing what you find out when your hard disk is dying.
-
- P.S.
-
- After I install the new drive and reformat the old drive will DOS mark
- the bad areas that couln't be used. Would it be possible to have the
- old drive overhauled. I've been trying to contact Seagate technical
- support but their line is forever busy.

- Subj: Cheap fix for ST4051 hard disk problem
- Orga: University of Colorado, Boulder
-
- Anyone out there with an ST4051 hard drive may realize that they have
- reliability problems. In particular, some models will fail about
- every 8 months of normal use (just often enough for warranties to
- expire).
- I have discovered that the culprit 4 out of 5 times is a single chip
- that drives the spindle stepper.
-
- It is a 13-pin SIP flatpack, part #TDA1510. It looks like:
- -----------------------------------------------------------------
- | |
- | |
- |__ __|
- \ TDA1500 /
- | |
- __/ \__
- | |
- | |
- | |
- -----------------------------------------------------------------
- | | | | | | | | | | | | |
- / | / | / | / | / | / | /
- | | | | | | | | | | | | |
- | | | | | | | | | | | | |
- | | | | | | | | | | | | |
-
- Every other pin is staggerred upwards. This part costs about $3
- and can be obtained from Hamilton-Avnet's Texas distributor.
- It is made by Signetics. Much better than paying $150 and up!
- This chip is not always the problem, but you can usually tell if it is,
- by listening to the drive when it powers up. Plug in the power (no
- other cables are necessary), and listen. If you hear a faint "click" from
- the drive, and nothing else, then this chip is probably to blame. If the
- drive spins up, then this chip is definitly NOT to blame (the drive
- cannot spin without it).
- After determining that this chip is the problem, desolder it with
- braid or a desoldering station, and solder in the new chip. MAKE SURE that
- you place an insulator between the chip and the PC board or it may not
- work, as the original TDA1510 used by Seagate (Hitachi) is different than the
- one I mentioned (Signetics).
- If this fixes the problem, you should be able to use your disk again
- WITH NO DATA LOSS! You may need to replace this chip again, so buy
- two for good measure.....
- This is a great way to get a cheap 40M, 40ms drive if you can find a busted
- ST4051. If anyone is skittish about soldering on their drive, I might
- be able to help out for a reasonable fee (maybe $50). No guarantees!
- Interestingly enough, the chip is a 12W audio amplifier chip. I guess
- it almost did the job of a motor controller.....
- P.S. SPECIAL THANKS to J.B. Technologies for (A) Telling me not to bother
- having them fix it cause it would just break again, and (B) Telling
- me what was wrong with the drive and what to replace.
- P.S. NO THANKS to Seagate for their zero help :-(
- I would appreciate comments from anyone who tries it.

-
- Hard drives loosing sectors is >NOT< a normal occurance. At least not
- on a global basis. I have customers running drives I installed in 1986
- that have had a sector or two go bad, but that is about it. The problem
- is you are probably running a fairly inexpensive stepper type drive.
- Like a 225-251-277??? What is happening is a two-fold problem. 1)
- mechanically wear is taking place. The head alignment is not solid. 2)
- your drive speed may be varying. That could be due to wear and tear on
- your bearings. When drive prices came down over the last several years,
- ... well, GUESS WHERE they got cheaper components?? Right. you have to
- pay really good money to get voice coil actuators, or steppers that
- don't get flakey after a few months. If your drive is under warranty,
- TAKE IT BACK (after getting that backup!) --- If you are loosing track 0
- you don't have much of a drive to work with!
-
- Incidentally, There are a couple of programs that will re-format on the
- fly and move files that are sitting over questionable areas... MACE does
- it, and one of the V series does it as well.. I am not sure if it was
- Vmarkbad (I think) that does it however...

-
- Alright guys, here is what happens when you manually park an autopark
- HD. The autopark positions the head in a "parking zone" (cylinders
- 822-823 for a Seagate ST251-1) when you power down. When you manually
- park the heads, you may move the heads farther than usual into the
- parking zone. This does no damage, but when you next turn the power on,
- your heads may not move all the way back to track 0, thus you hang
- instead of boot. Power off and back on and everthing is back to
- normal. [D [D [C [C Moral: parking an autopark drive is not dangerous,
- just useless and sometimes a minor annoynace.
