- PARK
-
- This program requires no operands. It is a modified version of the program
- which was released by PC-Tech Journal Magazine to park the heads of your
- hard drive, just prior to powering off your system. Many of the newer drives
- which are available today contain self-parking heads which do not require
- the use of a parking program prior to shutdown... But almost all of the older
- drives which use stepping motors for positioning the heads DO NOT. It is
- important to understand that the heads actually "fly" only microns above the
- recording surface of a drive during its operation. At the speed of 3600 rpm
- of the typical hard drive, and at the normal spacing between the head and the
- recording media... that would be like orbiting the space shuttle 1/4 inch from
- the ground. Any irregularities in the recording surface or introduction of
- any foriegn matter into the sealed casing (especially smoke) would instantly
- ruin the disk with a HEAD CRASH. A head crash is exactly what it sounds like,
- the recording head comes into direct contact with the recording media, and at
- 3600 rpm the resulting friction quickly renders the disk and/or the head
- unusable.
-
- In preparation for moving your machine or shutting your machine off for the
- day, you need to retract the head mechnism so that the heads are NOT in contact
- with the recording media when power is removed from the drive. This program
- will detect the presence of multiple drives and retract the head access arm
- or position it over a dedicated "landing-zone" so that the drives can be
- powered down safely. Do not enter any commands following the use of PARK, as
- this may cause subsequent head movement on one of your drives... simply
- type PARK, wait for the status to be displayed, and shut off your machine.
-
- The original author of this program is unknown
- modifications to support more than one drive done by Mike Sirmans.
