  34.          Other: * The shareware version of this software can only be used to 
  35.          test hard disk partitions which extend beyond track 1023 (on those
  36.          huge hard disks which have more than 1024 cylinders) at the 
  37.          relatively insensitive DOS level. Work is in progress on a version 
  38.          of the program which will support such disks more fully.

  41.                                 Program Description
  42.          ******************************************************************
  43.          Purpose: HDTEST allows thorough READ/WRITE testing of a (hard or
  44.          floppy) disk without loss of data.
  45.  
  46.          Features: This (Shareware) version of HDTEST allows thorough, 
  47.          comprehensive Read/Write testing of hard and 5.25", and 3.5" floppy 
  48.          disks on IBM PCs, XTs, ATs, and most reasonably IBM compatible 
  49.          clones. It can also be used to test almost all DOS-accessible 
  50.          storage devices currently in use on MS-DOS-compatible computers, 
  51.          including removable (floppy and hard) disks and logically 
  52.          partitioned hard disks. HDTEST can thoroughly test the magnetic 
  53.          media on a device which contains data WHILE PRESERVING THE DATA 
  54.          (although data loss is unavoidable if an area which is in use has 
  55.          become unREADable). HDTEST normally tests the disk much more 
  56.          thoroughly than programs such as DFixer, Mace, and Norton's DT, 
  57.          because it WRITES AND reads multiple test patterns on every sector 
  58.          on the disk, and because it gets below the DOS level to detect 
  59.          errors which are minor enough to be ignored by DOS but may 
  60.          nevertheless warn of developing problems. In addition to its 
  61.          testing function, HDTEST has been reported to be useful as an 
  62.          automatic disk repair utility for both hard and floppy disks which 
  63.          develop (especially) intermittent or persistent read errors, 
  64.          preventing or impeding their normal use. Both versions of the 
  65.          HDTEST package include full documentation on disk and a second 
  66.          program (HDCHEK), which does not write to the disk, and can be used 
  67.          to check that a given hardware/software combination is compatible 
  68.          with HDTEST.
