- This is the BACKfast read me document file that explains the additional
- features added in BACKfast version #1.21.
-
- EXPLANATION OF OPTIONS ADDED
- ----------------------------
-
- BACKfast VERSION #1.21
-
-
- HELP FILE: The BACKfast.HLP file may now be located in one of three places
- on the disk: (1) current directory, (2) \BACKFAST directory, (3)
- root directory. The program will search these directories in this
- order until it finds the help file.
-
- NOVELL: BACKfast will now backup ALL NOVELL system files, provided the
- user has "SUPERVISOR" rights. Otherwise, it will ignore the
- system hidden files.
-
- DOOR PROMPT: This feature is both a convenience and performance enhancer.
- During a "HIGH SPEED" backup, when the user is asked to insert
- the next diskette, he is prompted to open the diskette door
- and remove the diskette. Then he is prompted to insert next
- diskette and close the door. The backup will then immediately
- proceed, THERE IS NO NEED TO PRESS ANY KEY! However, if the user
- does NOT open the door and insert the next diskette within 10
- seconds, the prompt changes to "PRESS ANY KEY". The same is
- true if the user does NOT close the door within 10 seconds.
- This is done to prevent the diskette motor from running if the
- user leaves the diskette backup executing unattended.
-
- /P:xx OPTION: Used in the BACKfast Directory program from the command line
- only, this option enables the user to specify ANY paging page
- length. (Example: /P:20 means 20 lines of output per screen and
- then a pause prompting to press any key to continue or press ESC
- to exit.)
-
- CATALOG Allows grouping of files when creating a catalog from within the
- RANGING: menus. This feature is a convenience to mark or reverse the marks
- for the range of the files selected. It is function key driven
- and operates like a toggle on/off switch.
-
- RESTORATIONS During a given file-by-file restore, the user may restore
- OUT OF diskettes in any sequence they wish. However, if a file
- SEQUENCE: spans across more than one diskette and the next diskette
- restored is out-of-sequence, then that spanning file will NOT
- be completely restored! The program displays such a warning
- and asks the user to confirm the out-of-sequence restore.
- This feature is convenient when you want to restore files
- that you know are located on certain backup diskettes without
- having BACKfast read "thru" the previous diskettes. Also note
- that the status window statistics will not be valid.
- Example: You have one backup set consisting of 10 diskettes
- and the file(s) you want to restore are located near the end of
- the backup, you may choose to start the restore on diskette #8.
- If the files are not found, then you either specified the wrong
- file specification or the file(s) are located before diskette
- #8. You may restore out-of-sequence diskettes in ascending or
- descending order until the last diskette is read, then the
- restore will be terminated.
-
-
- DISKETTE When doing a backup, an approximation is given of how many
- APPROXIMATION: bytes are to be backed up along with how diskettes will be
- required to do the backup. This approximation is displayed
- after the message "Building Directory" before writting to
- the first diskette. The approximation message will scroll by
- rather quickly, however, you may press the Control key and the
- Num Lock key simultaneously to pause the screen output. The
- number of diskettes required is based on the type of diskette
- (360K OR 1.2M) currently in the backup drive and the mode chosen
- by the user (DOS or HIGH SPEED).
-
- STATUS WINDOW: This feature is displayed when executing the Backup or Restore
- programs from the menu (not from the DOS command line).
- It is useful in providing critical real-time information during
- the current process. The statistics displayed are as follows:
- ______________________________________________________________________
- Backup: | Kbytes scanned: 99999K Backup Time: 99:99 Diskette % : 100
- | Files scanned : 99999 Diskette # : 999 of 999 % Complete : 100
- |______________________________________________________________________
-
- ______________________________________________________________________
- Restore:| Kbytes restored: 99999K Restore Time: 99:99 Diskette % : 100
- (file) | Files restored : 9999 of 9999 Diskette # : 999 % Complete : 100

- (image)| Clusters restored:9999 of 9999 Diskette # : 999 % Complete : 100
- |______________________________________________________________________
-
-
- Note: Diskette % is the percentage of the current diskette being either full
- for a backup or perctentage of being restored for a restore.
-
- % Complete is the percentage of the backup or restore to being finished.
