  1.                               MUFMAP II

  3. MUFMAP II gives you the entire picture of the High Frequency Spectrum
  4. 1.8 Mhz to 30Mhz for any given day. And an hour by hour picture of 
  5. the band openings for the day or any given day.
  6.  
  7. MUFMAPS have many other uses.  You can plan your operating schedule 
  8. for contests more effectively; decide whether it is worth getting up 
  9. at 3am just to see what conditions are like; aid in setting up 
  10. sche3dules with DX stations.
  11.  
  12. The big advantage of MUFMAP II has over all other propagation 
  13. programs is that it shows you where the band openings are all over 
  14. the world and all at once.  Other programs will tell you when that 
  15. bands are open to a particular location (such as England, South 
  16. Africa, etc).  Only Mufmap can give you the world.
  17.  
  18. MUFMOVIE:  Its the week before the big DX contest.  You're starting 
  19. to plan you operating schedule.  In order to see what progagation 
  20. conditions will be like throughout the cont6est, you select the Make 
  21. a Mufmovie option in Mufmap.  You tell Mufmap that you want a 
  22. Mufmovie showing conditions on Aug 17 from 0000UTC to 24000UTC in two 
  23. hour steps.  After Mufmap has made the movie, you watch it by 
  24. selecting the Watch a Mufmovie option.  By seeing what conditions 
  25. will be like throughout the whole, you can make ssure that you are 
  26. using your time most efficiently - like knowing when everything will 
  27. be closed so you can set some sleep.

  29. INSTALLING AND RUNNING MUFMAP
  30.  The following files are located in the MUFMAP.Zip
  31.  MUFMAP.BAT - a batch fle to run the MUFMAP program
  32.  MUFMAPII.EXE - The MUFMAP program
  33.  DEFAULTS.DAT - contains various user defined defaults
  34.  WORLD1.PIC - a map of the world in 320X200 graphics
  35.  
  36.  In MUFMAP2.ZIP are some sample files and maps Note: they are not 
  37. required to operate MUFMAPII but only are shown for examples only.

  39. If you have a hard disc drive, I recommend you to install Mufmap on 
  40. it.  This will greatly increase the speed at which Mufmaps and 
  41. Mufmovies are retrieved.

  43.   1.  Create a directory on you hard drive to hold MUFMAP:
  44.       Type MD C:\MUFMAP <ENTER>
  45.       Unzip MUFMAP.ZIP to this directory.
  46.  
  47.   2.  Create a subdirectory in MUFMAP by typing:
  48.       MD \MUFMAP\MAPS <ENTER>
  49.  
  50.   3.  Unzip MUFMAP2.Zip to this subdirectory
  51.  
  52. If you have an IBM compatible graphics printer and you want to be 
  53. able to print MUFMAPS on you printer, then you must either:
  54. Copy the DOS program GRAPHICS.COM or GRAPHICS.EXE to the mufmap 
  55. directory, or have the directory which contains the DOS Graphics

  68. program available on the DOS PATH statement. (SEE your DOS manual for 
  69. information on the PATH statement)

  71. To run MUFMAP go to the directory MUFMAP and type mufmap.

  73. When making a MUFMAP, you will be asked for the Solar Flux number.
  74. This can be acquired from WWV Radio at 18 Minutes after the Hour on
  75. 2.5 Mhz, 5 Mhz, 10 Mhz, 15 Mhz or 20 Mhz. on AM.

  77. Or you can call NBS which maintains a recorded phone message service 
  78. that also operates 24 hours a day.  The message is the same as that

  81.                              DEFINITIONS
  82. LUF- The lowest usable Frequency that will support communications 
  83. between yourself and another stations.
  84.  
  85. HPF - The highest possible  frequency is the frequency which will 
  86. support communications between yourself and anoother station on at 
  87. least 10 percent of the time.
  88.  
  89. MUF - The maximum useable frequency is the frequency which will 
  90. support communications between yourself and another station on at 
  91. least 50 percent of the time.
  92.  
  93. FOT - The frequency of Optimum Traffic is the frequency which will 
  94. support communications between yourself and another station at least 
  95. 90 percent of the time.
  96.  
  97. SOLAR FLUX - A measure of the intensity of the sun's electromagnetic 
  98. radiation.
