- The Patriot missle system was planned as the successor to the aging
- Hawk and Nike Hercules air defense missle systems. It was a long time in
- the development process, but at the same time benefited from the delays.
- The Patriot incorporates technology which was not available when the
- system was first concieved.
- The mobile launcher carries four missles, each in it's shipping
- container. Missles are launched directly from the shipping boxes, and
- reloads can be installed by simply replacing the boxes. Spare missles,
- fire control radars, computers and power supplies are carried on seperate
- self-propelled vehicles or towed trailers.
- Patriot is claimed to be effective against aircraft or attack
- missles in spite of intense jamming or heavy ECM (Electronic
- Countermeasures) clutter. The heart of the Patriot missle system is the
- phased-array radar and computer guidance software. The missles
- themselves, although neither cheap nor simple, represent developments of
- existing technology with the exception of their guidance packages.
- Patriot uses what is known as TVM or Track Via Missle guidance, which is
- fiendishly complex and expensive in development costs. However, as has
- been seen in the Gulf War, Patriot is effective against surface to
- surface missles such as the SCUD-B.
