  72.        From what I have been reading it seems that there is no real easy way
  73.     to learn Morse Code, or CW. However, there are easier ways to learn the
  74.     secrets of CW. The method described below is listed in the 1949 edition
  75.     of The Boy Scout Handbook. I have tried it and it seems to work well. I
  76.     still have a ways to go, but I am getting there.

  79.        First thing you need to do is toss out all of those alphabet sheets
  80.     that have the letters represented by dots and dashes. The table below
  81.     is what I'll be referring to from here on out.

  124.        I am using this method right now and it seems to be easier than anything
  125.     that I have tried so far. Learn to recieve first, sending will then be a lot
  126.     easier.

  134.   The following learning guide has been developed with the CW.ARC package in
  135. mind. I have obtained permission to include this text in the ARC file from
  136. from Lee Murrah, the Author of CW.ARC. I hope this will be of some help to you
  137. in getting that Ham ticket. The first step, and the easiest to take, is to
  138. memorize the chart on page 2.
  139.

  141.   The best way I have found to do this is to use a card to cover the letters
  142. that you are not trying to memorize. If you learn the groups as stated on the
  143. chart first, it will be much easier. I have included in this booklet a few
  144. practice pages with the alphabet mixed up. Once you think you have gotten it
  145. stored in the ole memory banks, try one. Just take the sheet and fill in the
  146. blanks, don't cheat!

  149.   I usually set CW.COM up at 20wpm. This is kind of fast if you are just in
  150. the beginning stages. It defaults to 14wpm but I set it to 10 at first. At 10
  151. words per minute it goes pretty slow but it will let you get a better idea of
  152. of what the characters will sound like. The first thing to try out on CW is the
  153. Type feature. This will send random letters and numbers and you have to type in
  154. the correct response. When the routine is finished it will show you what the
  155. send and receive speeds were.

  158.   Once you get good at hearing the signals you might want to turn up the speed.
  159. The next step, after you have mastered the Type feature, is to use the Enter
  160. feature. Have a friend type in a short one or two line msg. made up of 5 letter
  161. words. Go sit where you can hear the computer but not see it and have him 'send'
  162. the message. Have a pencil and paper ready to jot down the message. As you get
  163. better you will be able to translate in your head and not need the notepad.
  164. Well that about sums it up. A few 2 letter groups you will soon have commited to
  165. memory would be:

  167.         CQ      Announcement stating you are looking for someone to CW with.
  168.         ES      End of sentence
  169.         73      Wishing someone good luck

  172.   After you get the 2 line messages down to an art, try longer ones. Something
  173. that I have been doing is tuning my scanner in on Radio Ops. sending CW. You
  174. might be surprised at what you'll hear.
