  31.      A word about user supported software:
  32.  
  33.      The user supported software concept (usually referred to as freeware)
  34.      is an attempt to provide software at low cost.  The cost of offering a
  35.      new product by conventional means is staggering, and hence dissuades
  36.      many independent authors and small companies from developing and
  37.      promoting their ideas.  User supported software is an attempt to
  38.      develop a new marketing channel, where products can be introduced at
  39.      low cost.

  41.      If user supported software works, then everyone will benefit.  The
  42.      user will benefit by receiving quality products at low cost, and by
  43.      being able to "test drive" software thoroughly before purchasing it.
  44.      The author benefits by being able to enter the commercial software
  45.      arena without first needing large sources of venture capital.
  46.  
  47.      But it can only work with your support.  We're not just talking about
  48.      SETDRIVE here, but about all user supported software.  If you find that
  49.      you are still using a program after a couple of weeks, then pretty
  50.      obviously it is worth something to you, and you should send in a
  51.      contribution.

  55.                                ABOUT SETDRIVE
  56.  
  57.      SETDRIVE is utility that resets the default parameters for a
  58.      floppy disk drive. I first developed SETDRIVE after
  59.      installing a 720K 3 1/2" drive into a XT clone as the B
  60.      drive. The only way to use the drive as a 720K drive was to
  61.      add a DRIVER.SYS entry to the CONFIG.SYS file telling DOS
  62.      that the drive in fact was a 720K drive and not a 360K
  63.      drive. However, DOS made my 720K drive the D drive and left
  64.      the B drive as a 360K device. Since the new drive was
  65.      physically cabled as the B drive I felt that DOS should
  66.      treat it as the B drive, hence the creation of SETDRIVE.
  67.      SETDRIVE is not intended to work miracles with your
  68.      hardware, so even though SETDRIVE will change DOS to think
  69.      that your 360K drive is a 1.44 megabyte drive, the reality
  70.      of the hardware will become apparent as soon as you attempt
  71.      to use the drive beyond its hardware limits.

  73.      Running SETDRIVE without a parameter will produce a output
  74.      on the display describing the parameters necessary for
  75.      SETDRIVE to do what you want it to.
  76.  
  77.      Running SETDRIVE with just a drive letter will produce a
  78.      output on the display of what the default parameters for the
  79.      drive given as the parameter are.
  80.      SETDRIVE B: will produce a display showing the current
  81.      default parameter settings for the B drive.

  83.      Running SETDRIVE with a drive letter and a size will change
  84.      the default drive parameters for the drive specified to
  85.      those of a drive of the size specified.
  86.      SETDRIVE B: 720 will change the B drive to a 720K drive even
  87.      if it is not physically capable of being that type of drive.

  89.      SETDRIVE will work on any floppy disk drive with a drive
  90.      letter between A and E. SETDRIVE will change a drive to any
  91.      of the following sizes (360, 720, 1.2, 1.4) regardless of
  92.      the physical characteristics of the drive. Beware, as stated
  93.      earlier SETDRIVE cannot change the physical capabilities of
  94.      your floppy drive a 360k drive will always be a 360k drive
  95.      no matter what SETDRIVE tells DOS that it is.

  97.      SETDRIVE can be used in a batch file or from the command
  98.      line. I use it in my autoexec.bat file to change my B drive
  99.      from a 360k that DOS mistakenly thinks it is to the 720k
  100.      drive that it physically is. SETDRIVE can be used on AT
  101.      systems to change the 1.2m drive to a 360k drive when making
  102.      floppies for another system such as a XT that only has 360k
  103.      drives. (SETDRIVE A 360) When your done making floppies for
  104.      the XT system simply type "SETDRIVE A 1.2" to return your A
  105.      drive to its full capability. SETDRIVE works equally well on
  106.      3 1/2 inch drives. Since I have a 1.4meg drive in my system
  107.      but many of my friends have only a 720k drive I use
  108.      SETDRIVE C 720 to change my 1.4meg drive to 720k when making
  109.      floppies for my friends, and then SETDRIVE c 1.4 to return
  110.      it to its full capability.

  112.      SETDRIVE will not allow you to change the parameters for
  113.      your hard disk so don't worry about losing your valuable
  114.      data.

  118.                              SETDRIVE LICENSE
  119.  
  120.      The use of SETDRIVE in a commercial environment or government organization
  121.      is granted under the following terms:
  122.  
  123.      1. Payment of the license fee must be made to Ron Neth.  The fee
  124.         is based on the number of computers which will be used to run
  125.         SETDRIVE, as follows:
  126.  
  127.                1 to  9 copies  $10   each
  128.               10 to 24 copies  $7.50 each
  129.               25 to 49 copies  $6    each
  130.               50 to 99 copies  $4.50 each
  131.               over  99 copies  $400  one time fee
  132.  
  133.      2.  You may use SETDRIVE on the number of computers included in the license
  134.          fee.  If you have paid the fee for over 99 copies, then you may
  135.          use SETDRIVE on any number of computers within your organization.
  136.  
  137.      3.  You may make copies of the program, in its original,  unmodified
  138.          form,  without restriction.  You may distribute these copies of
  139.          the program without restriction.
  140.  
  141.      4.  If these copies are distributed outside of your organization,  you
  142.          have no obligation to control the use of those copies which are
  143.          outside of your organization.

  145.      5.  You may make copies of the program documentation, in both its
  146.          printed form and machine readable form, without restriction.
  147.  
  148.      6.  You may use future versions of SETDRIVE under this license.  The latest
  149.          version is available from  Ron Neth for a $5 service charge.

  151.      7.  You may NOT modify the program or charge a fee for copying or
  152.          distributing the program.

  154.      8.  It is your responsibility to make the necessary copies and to
  155.          deliver them to the computers which they will be used on.
