  273.                                                                 What is DFormat?                                                                What is DFormat?

  275.                DFormat is a full-featured floppy diskette formatting utility. It
  276.                achieves its utility through a menu driven interface and provides
  277.                the means to easily and quickly format 5 1/4" (360KB or 1.2MB) or
  278.                3 1/2" (720KB  or 1.4MB) diskettes.  Formatting  speed is roughly
  279.                twice that of the normal DOS format utility. After using  DFormat
  280.                once you will  not return  to the DOS  Format utility for  floppy
  281.                diskettes again.

  283.                Because of  Copyrights and  such DFormat will  only allow  you to
  284.                format data diskettes only (non-bootable).  A special boot sector
  285.                is placed on the disk to inform the operator to place  a bootable
  286.                diskette in the drive and continue.  Within this boot sector is a
  287.                un-initialized  10  character  serial  number.  This is  used  by
  288.                MSTRCPY (another TOADWare Software  Systems product) to serialize
  289.                a diskette.

  299.                having  a minimum of 256K of  RAM, and a standard floppy diskette
  300.                controller. Color video will give  a more acceptable display  but

  306.                TOADWare Software Systems, and all rights are reserved (1990). It
  307.                is  licensed specifically for evaluation  use by all IBM PC/XT/AT

  309.                time not to exceed 30 days.

  340.                the express  permission of  TOADWare Software  Systems, with  the
  341.                following exceptions :

  343.                     Bona fide organized  computer user  groups and/or clubs  may
  344.                     charge a nominal copying and handling fee for the purpose of
  345.                     distributing Shareware copies of DFormat to their members.

  437.                Movement thru  the menu  system is very  simple, infact  you have
  438.                three methods for  selecting a function! 1.) Use  the cursor keys
  439.                to move the cursor bar to  the desired function and press  Return
  440.                to select. 2.) Use the mouse (if one has been installed) in place
  441.                of the cursor keys. 3.) Press the key matching the first entry on
  442.                each menu lie.

  444.                Menu items  are selected either by  moving the cursor  bar to the
  445.                desired  item  and  pressing return  (MOUSE  LEFT  BUTTON) or  by
  446.                pressing the character key  corresponding the highlighted option.
  447.                You can also move back to the previous menu level by pressing the
  448.                ESC (MOUSE RIGHT BUTTON).

  450.                All menu items  are augmented by a  help line that is  written on
  451.                the 25th line of the screen.

  477.                                    Simply put,  use this  option to  insure that
  478.                                    each of the  physical drive references  match
  479.                                    the logical  drive reference  you are  use to
  480.                                    using (i.e. drive 1 is 'A').

  483.                                    density of the diskette to be formatted.

  485.                     N O T E -      Be very  careful using this  option! You  can                    N O T E -                                                   
  486.                                    select disk formats that are higher than what
  487.                                    the disk drive will allow  and it will appear
  488.                                    that DFormat is working correctly.

  490.                                    Also,  the  higher  density  formats  (720KB,
  491.                                    1.2MB, and 1.44MB) use 80 track drives. 
  492.  
  493.                                    If  you try  to format  these higher  density
  494.                                    formats on a standard 360KB  drive you can do
  495.                                    physical damage to the disk drive its self. 
  496.  
  497.           Volume Label             This option allows the operator to change the          Volume Label                                                          
  498.                                    default  volume label  for the  selected disk
  499.                                    drive. Each of the disk  drives can have it's
  500.                                    own default label.

  502.           Set Verify Flag          This option allow  the use to set  the verify          Set Verify Flag

  504.                                    disk  write. If  good  quality diskettes  are
  505.                                    used then  this option  will only  double the
  506.                                    time required to format a diskette.

  509.                                    roughly  twice  the speed  of the  DOS format
  510.                                    utility.

  539.                                    option formats the Directory (and FAT)  areas
  540.                                    of the diskette. This is  the same as the DOS
  541.                                    command DEL  *.* but gives the added security
  542.                                    in that a file cannot be un-erased.

  544.                                    If any files  are found  on the diskette  the
  545.                                    operator will be shown a  list of those files
  546.                                    and  be prompted whether to continue or abort
  547.                                    the operation.

  549.           Cyclic Format            This option allows the user to batch format a          Cyclic Format                                                         
  550.                                    large number of diskettes.  If a diskette has
  551.                                    not  been previously  formatted  then a  fast
  552.                                    format   will  be   performed.  If   a  valid
  553.                                    directory area is  found then a  quick format
  554.                                    will be done.

  556.                                    After each diskette is done the  program will
  557.                                    sound a  tone and  wait for  the operator  to
  558.                                    insert a new diskette. Pressing any key  will
  559.                                    start  the  program  again  or  pressing  the
  560.                                    ESCape  key will  stop the Cyclic  Format and
  561.                                    return you to the main menu at the end of the
  562.                                    current operation.

  576.                operation. It will also abort formatting with an error message.

  580.                We have tried  to make DFormat  as bullet proof  as possible  and
  581.                have provided for an Error Box to pop up in the event  a critical
  582.                error is encountered.  The operation  currently in progress  will

  605.                DFormat contains  two levels of context sensitive help. The first
  606.                is available for the current operation by  pressing the F1 Key, a                                                                       F1       
  607.                window  will  pop  up with  help  information  pertaining to  the
  608.                current operation.

  610.                The second level  of help is  a general pick  list of valid  help
  611.                topics. At any time you wish to access the help system for all of
  612.                the operations simply press the Alt-F1 Key. A window containing a                                               Alt-F1                           
  613.                pick list of all  of the available help topics will  be shown and
  614.                by  moving the  cursor bar  to the proper  item and  pressing the
  615.                return key you will be shown that help topic.
