- Convert Those Floppies!!
-
-
-
- Boy am I excited! I've had this 3.5" drive for almost
- nine months and finally get to use it seriously. I just paid
- for this year's and possibly next year's subscription to the
- Computer Shopper by reading an article written by Mr. Timothy
- L. Wilfong on how to convert 720K 3.5" floppies to 1.4MB
- floppies. The article is on page 322 of the April issue.
-
- Although I have had the 3.5 drive for quite a while, I
- could never afford to use it for anything except 720k disks.
- Now I can really begin to use it. At 79 cents a disk, the
- drive becomes practical.
-
- Mr. Wilfong deserves a pat on the back for writing this
- fantastic article. THANKS TIM!!!!!!!!!!
-
- Do not buy one of those conversion kits offered in the
- magazines. They can't consist of more than a soldering iron
- and a razor blade. Instead, buy an el cheepo soldering iron
- with a round pointed end (the end should be about 1/8 inch in
- diameter) from your local K-mart or Walmart or other
- neighborhood discount store for around $4-$5 and get a couple
- of razor blades or other very sharp cutting instruments.
- That's all the tools that you will need.
-
- Holding a 3.5 disk with the metal piece facing you, you
- will see the write protect hole in the upper right-hand
- corner. Look at the upper left-hand corner and you will see
- that there is no hole there. If you had a hole there, it
- would become a 1.4MB floppy. No magic to it! Heat up the
- soldering iron and then push a hole into the plastic with it
- in the upper left-hand corner. Now you have a disk with a
- hole in both of the upper corners. Trim the resulting ridge
- of plastic off with the razor blade. FORMAT B: and see those
- great numbers 1457664 appear when the format is finished. It
- also says do you want to format another....You bet your ass I
- do!!
-
- The hole that you melt through the disk does not have to
- be exact. I eye-balled all of mine and they formatted
- beautifully. Try to get the hole in the same position as the
- write protect hole, only on the other side of the disk.
-
- It works guys! Don't burn your fingers!
