- CHANGES/UPDATES from version 1.02 to 1.10
-
-
- ***** QUADRAPHONIC COMPRESSION SUPPORT. (Stereo never sounded this good!)
- StS now supports four compression programs. PKZIP, PKPAK, LHARC, and
- PAK as defaults. Registered users enjoy the ability to program the
- command strings used by these programs and even port other compression
- utilities such as System Enhancement's ARC.EXE program. Who knows, at
- the pace this compression technology is moving, another of the latest
- and greatest "archivers" may be out next week! StS has been designed
- to take care of this possibility.....
-
- ***** EDITOR and USER utilities interface improved.
- StS now allows the user to pass parameters to the editor and user
- defined user utility programs and also makes the passing of the
- filename and pausing after execution optional. Batch files are also
- now acceptable as user defined programs. The shareware version supports
- 1 user defined utility whereas the registered version supports four.
- User defined utilities may be any program the user desires to aid in
- using the system...The most popular "attachment" to StS seems to be
- Vern Buerg's LIST.COM program. Although StS has a built in viewer, its
- intent is as a "quick look" list function and not a full blown file
- list program. LIST.COM makes an excellent choice for USER1.
-
- ***** SOUND EFFECTS (and the ability to turn them off!)
- Exploding windows now "bark" when they blast on the screen. The sound
- is included only if exploding windows are enabled. This version also
- contains an option to disable sound via the setup section.
-
- ***** HIDDEN FILES SWITCH
- Although due to time limitations this feature is not fully up to our
- standards, we have at least included the ability to see hidden files
- via a setup mode switch. Expect coming updates to enhance this as
- well as other file attribute related functions. Since StS is used as
- much as a file compression interface as a pure shell, it was considered
- important that the new compression program support features be released
- as soon as they were implemented and tested.
-
- ***** SETUP PROGRAM LINE EDITOR
- Entering and changing setup program information is now much easier due
- to the new line/screen editor built in. The <Ins>, <Del>, <Home>,
- <End>, and cursor keys are all now active when editing.
-
- ***** DYNAMIC MEMORY ALLOCATION improved.
- StS, being written in 100% assembler language, is already quite small
- and fast by nature. It is now an even better memory miser.
- Improvements in the memory allocation techniques coupled with StS's
- ability to "shrink" itself when running external programs should make
- even your biggest applications happy. The registered version, despite
- its enhanced features is actually slightly smaller than the shareware
- version. This is due to the fact that it does not contain the StS
- registration form data and various other text messages.
-
- ***** SET STS_110 environment variable added.
- StS will now search the MS-DOS environment for information relating
- to the name and location of its STS110.CFG configuration file. Use
- the SET STS_110=d:\path\filename.ext in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file if you
- want the configuration file name or location to be different from the
- default of d:\STS110.CFG. This string is very useful if you are
- running StS from various disk drives since it tells StS which drive
- contains the configuration information.
-
- ***** INCREASED PROGRAMMABILITY (registered version only)
- Command strings for controlling the compression programs may now be up
- to 16 bytes in length. This feature allows full implementation of the
- PKZIP compression options as well as doing some other neat tricks. One
- trick worth noting is the ability to program LHARC 1.12 so that it uses
- Buerg's LIST.COM program as its file viewer. Registered users may
- want to try programming the type text file command as [P /VLIST] in
- LHARC.
-
- ***********
- Several other minor bug fixes and changes are included with version
- 1.10 but do not merit mention here....So thats all for now.. ENJOY!
