- Here are a few anticipated questions and their answers:
-
-
- Q: You recommend use of the "/b" (use both PKZIPs) option. Why?
-
- A: Take a look at the table in "SMARTZIP.DOC". Some files compress MUCH
- better with the "Reducing" algorithm, which is available ONLY in
- PKZIP 0.9x. In fact, MUCH of the benefit of using SmartZIP comes
- from using the Reducing compression algorithm when appropriate.
-
-
- Q: But won't I always get the best possible compression using the "-ex"
- option in PKZIP 1.xx?
-
- A: No. Since some files compress best with Reducing, which isn't
- available in PKZIP 1.xx, you can't always get the best compression
- with PKZIP 1.xx's "-ex" option. Even if a particular file compresses
- best with either PKZIP 1.xx's Imploding or Shrinking algorithms,
- PKZIP 1.xx doesn't always select the best of the two for a particular
- file.
-
-
- Q: What do I need to do to use the "/b" (use both PKZIPs) option?
-
- A: Leave PKZIP.EXE for PKZIP 1.xx alone. Take the PKZIP.EXE for PKZIP
- 0.9x and rename it to "PKZIP09.EXE". Both of these .EXEs should be
- in a subdirectory specified in your PATH. Then, just use the "/b"
- option switch when you run SmartZIP.
-
-
- Q: But, I've already deleted PKZIP 0.9x! What can I do?
-
- A: PKZIP092.EXE (the file containing the PKZIP.EXE for PKZIP 0.9x as
- originally distributed by PKWare) is still available on many BBSes,
- including Exec PC in Milwaukee. See the contact information in
- "SMARTZIP.DOC" for Exec PC's phone number. Another possibility is to
- contact PKWare and ask for it. Perhaps with enough requests, it'll
- be made available directly from PKWare. As a last resort, contact
- me. I'll tell you where to get it.
