  21.       ARC is used to create and maintain file archives.  An archive is a
  22.       group of files collected together into one file in such a way that the
  23.       individual files may be recovered intact.  ARC automatically
  24.       compresses the files being archived so that the resulting archive
  25.       takes up a minimum amount of space.
  26.  
  27.       When ARC is used to add a file to an archive it analyzes the file to
  28.       determine which of three storage methods will result in the greatest
  29.       savings.  Since one of the three methods involves no compression at
  30.       all, the resulting archive entry will never be larger than the
  31.       original file.

  33.       ARC provides a full range of functions for archive creation and
  34.       maintenance.  ARC also provides password encryption to protect your
  35.       data from unauthorized use.

  37.       While the exact degree of compression achieved will vary depending on
  38.       the contents of any given file, typical compression rates are as
  39.       follows:

  41.           Programs (.EXE and .COM) files     20% to 30%
  42.           ASCII text and documents           50% to 60%
  43.           Spreadsheets                       50% to 90%
  44.  
  45.       ARC calculates a cyclical redundancy check (CRC) on every file it puts
  46.       in an archive and recalculates it whenever a file is extracted.  This
  47.       helps to ensure data integrity when archives are transmitted over
  48.       telephone lines.
