- Q V T
-
- A DEC VT220 Emulation Program
- For IBM PC Compatible Computers
-
- Version 3.55
- October 1989
-
-
- QVT is a program for IBM PC's and compatibles which fully
- emulates the DEC VT series of terminals, including the VT52,
- VT100/102, and VT220. In addition to terminal emulation,
- QVT also allows the user to perform file transfers using
- the Kermit, Xmodem, Ymodem, and Zmodem protocols, and offers
- conveniences such as auto-dial and auto-login.
-
- Though it may be used as a general-purpose PC communications
- program, QVT excels when used to carry on interactive sessions
- with host computers which require the use of DEC terminals,
- such as the DEC VAX. In this context, QVT provides high per-
- formance, extremely rigorous emulation, and convenient mapping
- of the DEC keyboard to the PC keyboard.
-
- QVT will run on all IBM Personal Computers and PS/2's. All IBM
- display systems are supported, including EGA, MCGA, and VGA.
-
-
- Installation
- ------------
-
- The files included in this package are:
-
- QVT_PC.EXE the QVT executable
- QVT.HLP an on-line help file
- DEFAULT.VT a model configuration file
-
- We recommend that a directory be created on your hard drive
- where these files can be placed. If you wish to use QVT from
- anywhere on your hard drive with no loss of convenience, you
- should create an environment variable 'VT_DIR', and assign
- to it the name of that directory. This 'SET' command should
- be included in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
-
-
- User Interface
- --------------
-
- The QVT user interface is simple and consistent. All commands
- (with two minor exceptions) are accessed through a group of
- pull-down menus; the headings of these menus are displayed
- in the menu bar across the top of the screen. To invoke a
- menu, press the <Alt> key together with the first letter of
- the menu. At the left side of the menu bar is the '■' symbol;
- this is the 'System' menu, and is invoked with the combination
- <Alt-X>.
-
- After a pull-down menu has been invoked, you may select one
- of its options by moving the highlight bar to the desired
- item, then pressing the <Enter> key. If you wish to erase a
- menu without selecting any of its items, press the <Esc> key.
-
-
- Below is a summary of QVT's commands:

- Configuring QVT
- ---------------
-
- To change QVT's operating parameters, perform the following
- procedure:
-
- 1. Invoke the 'Settings' menu, then select the 'Terminal'
- or 'Communications' option.
-
- 2. When these options are selected, a new popup window will
- be displayed which shows a portion of QVT's current operating
- values.
-
- 3. To change one of these values, use the arrow keys to move
- the cursor to the desired item, then repeatedly press the
- <GreyPlus> key to step through the available values.
-
- 4. When all displayed values are as you want them, press the
- <Esc> key to erase the window, then press <Esc> again to
- erase the 'Settings' menu.
-
-
- The sample config file, DEFAULT.VT, includes comments which
- briefly explain all of QVT's configurable parameters.
- DEFAULT.VT is a plain ASCII text file, and may be printed or
- viewed with any standard text editor or browser.
-
-
- Modem Configuration
- -------------------
-
- QVT is designed to work with Hayes-compatible modems. In order
- for QVT's auto-dial feature to work properly, your modem must
- be configured such that the CD and DTR indicators are NOT
- forced on by the modem. Instead, the CD indicator should be
- set to track with the carrier from the remote modem, and the
- DTR indicator should be set to respond to the presence of a DTR
- signal from the PC.
-
- On the Hayes Smartmodem 1200, these configurations are performed
- by setting switches 1 and 6 to the UP position. On the Hayes 2400
- modem, the commands 'AT&C1' and 'AT&D2' should be used. If you
- are not using a Hayes modem, consult your modem's owner's manual
- as to how to achieve this configuration.
-
- You should also make sure that your modem has result codes
- enables. The Hayes command to do this is 'ATQ' or 'ATQ0'.
-
-
- Modem Initialization
- --------------------
-
- QVT does NOT automatically place a carriage return at the
- end of the modem initialization string. If your modem requires
- a carriage return as a command terminator (as do Hayes modems),
- you must put one at the end of your initialization string,
- using the notation '^M'.
-
-
- Keyboard Mapping
- ----------------
-
- This version of QVT is a 'vanilla' implementation for the
- 101-key 'Enhanced' keyboard. By 'vanilla', we mean that
- this version of QVT will work both on machines that have
- BIOS support for the 101-key keyboard, and on those that
- don't (e.g., many XT clones). It does not attempt to use
- the top row of the numeric keypad for 'PF' keys. A version
- of QVT that does is available to registered users (see below).
