  26.                         WHAT TO DO NEXT

  29. 1.  Finish reading this file.  It contains general warnings and helpful
  30.     pointers as well as providing information on upgrading from
  31.     prior versions.
  32.  
  33. 2.  If you are a first-time user, proceed next to STARTING.DOC.
  34.     This file will lead you through the steps you need to perfrom
  35.     to set up Aladdin and customize it for your use.
  36.  
  37. 3.  Read USE_ALAD.DOC.  It provides a short tutorial on using Aladdin
  38.     and shows what the different command options do.
  39.  
  40. 4.  If you are having trouble, refer to FAQS.DOC (Frequently Asked
  41.     QuestionS).  If that doesn't help, try the PC Aladdin Support RT.
  42.     It is located on Page 110. To get to it, type "ALADDIN" or
  43.     "M110;1".  Also, the F1 function key ALWAYS brings up context-
  44.     sensitive help. If you're not sure about something, press
  45.     the F1 key first!  Chances are that the answer to your
  46.     question is in one of the friendly F1 help screens.

  49.                    COMPATABILITY WARNING

  52.   == WARNING -- CENTRAL POINT SOFTWARE PC-CACHE USERS ==
  53.  
  54. We have determined that there is an incompatibility between
  55. PC-CACHE version 6.0 and Aladdin. Fortunately, the problem is
  56. easy to resolve.  On the command line that invokes PC-CACHE,
  57. always use the following parameter:
  58.  
  59.                            /WRITE=OFF
  60.  
  61. This disables disk write caching, which can cause problems under
  62. some conditions. We have discussed this with Central Point
  63. Software's technical support personnel and they have asked us to
  64. post this warning as well as ask all users of versions of
  65. PC-CACHE lower than 6.0 to please contact Central Point Software
  66. for instructions on how to upgrade your copy of PC-CACHE.

  69.            UPGRADING FROM PREVIOUS ALADDIN VERSIONS

  72. If you are upgrading from any version of Aladdin higher than
  73. 1.01, you need to replace the following files,
  74.  
  75.      ALAD.EXE
  76.      ALADDIN.EXE
  77.      ALADDIN.HLP
  78.      GENIE.LST
  79.      ALADCVT.EXE
  80.  
  81.                         == IMPORTANT ==
  82.  
  83. The format of the ALADDIN.CFG file has changed. ALL USERS OF
  84. ALADDIN VERSIONS LESS THAN 1.40 MUST RUN THE ALADCVT PROGRAM
  85. IN THE ALADDIN DIRECTORY TO CONVERT YOUR OLD ALADDIN.CFG FILE
  86. TO THE NEW FORMAT.

  88. If you have your prompt character and/or break character set to
  89. anything other than "?" and Ctrl-C, respectively, ALADCVT will
  90. ask you if you want to change those parameters to the default
  91. values mentioned above. You may choose to change the values,
  92. leave them alone, or quit without updating the configuration
  93. file.
  94.  
  95. You -must- eventually choose between making the change or
  96. leaving the parameters alone. If you choose to leave the
  97. non-standard prompt and break characters in your configuration
  98. file, you must always use Aladdin with the new /NOOVER command
  99. line argument. This is because GEnie knows that you are using
  100. Aladdin 1.40 and sets the terminal setup parameters for the
  101. current session to the defaults that Aladdin uses. If your
  102. prompt and/or break character are not "?" and Ctrl-C and you do
  103. not use the /NOOVER command line argument, Aladdin will not work
  104. properly with GEnie.
  105.  
  106. If you are using any version of Aladdin earlier than 1.40, you
  107. need to copy the ALADCVT.EXE program to your current Aladdin
  108. directory and run it. It will convert your existing ALADDIN.CFG
  109. to the 1.40 format and make a backup copy of your previous
  110. ALADDIN.CFG in a file called ALADCFG.OLD.
  111.  
  112. If you are using a version of Aladdin earlier than 1.30, you
  113. must also update all the topic indexes for all the RT's that you
  114. are accessing Aladdin with. This is accomplished by selecting
  115. each RT in turn and pressing the "U" key to update the topic
  116. indexes.  If you do not do this Aladdin will crash.
  117.  
  118.                - NOTE TO ALADDIN 1.00 USERS -
  119.  
  120. ALADCVT.EXE will not convert an ALADDIN.CFG configuration file
  121. created by version 1.00 of Aladdin. If you are still using
  122. version 1.00, you will need to write down your configuration
  123. data, delete ALADDIN.CFG and run the new ALADDIN.EXE program
  124. file to create a new ALADDIN.CFG (it will create one by itself).
  125. You can then re-enter your configuration information.
