- WESTERN DIGITAL, COLUMBIA DATA PRODUCTS
- ANNOUNCE FASST HARD DISK CONTROLLER BOARDS
-
- IRVINE, CALIF., April 18, 1988 -- Western Digital Corporation
- (AMEX:WDC) and Columbia Data Products, Inc. of Altamonte Springs,
- Florida announced today the introduction of the FASST hard disk
- and tape drive controller board family.
-
- Designed specifically for IBM* PC AT* type systems, FASST
- controller boards can achieve a host data transfer rate in excess
- of five megabytes per second. This unparalleled rate is
- accomplished using an innovative combination of parallel
- processing techniques. A separate microprocessor, which resides
- on the FASST controller, performs all data transfers by directly
- communicating to the computer's memory via a process known as
- "First Party DMA".
-
- "The FASST product family is the bridge which brings mainframe
- disk controller technology and performance to the desktop level,"
- said Alan Welsh, President of Columbia Data Products. "Because
- the FASST products are truly intelligent controllers, they
- provide the revolutionary architecture for integrating all future
- high performance peripherals while maintaining compatibility with
- existing applications."
-
- "This product is designed for applications which are disk
- intensive, such as data base programs, computer aided design
- (CAD) programs, Xenix or Unix systems and file servers," said
- Kathy Braun, senior vice president and general manager of Western
- Digital's Storage Products Strategic Business Unit.
-
- The 7000-FASST, the initial product of the family, is a
- combination of the 7000 series controller board from Western
- Digital and the SST Software Package from Columbia Data Products.
- Intended for use on an IBM PC AT or compatible with embedded SCSI
- hard disk and tape drives, it is currently available from both
- companies and their distributors.
-
- Columbia Data Products, Inc., is a privately held developer and
- supplier of ultra-high performance mass storage products and is
- located in Altamonte Springs, Florida (407) 869-6700.
-
- Western Digital Corporation, headquartered in Irvine, California,
- with facilities worldwide, was founded in 1970 as a specialized
- semiconductor manufacturer. Since then the company has become a
- leading supplier of a broad range of storage management,
- intelligent disk drive, communications, imaging and video
- products for both OEM and end-user markets.

-
- We have included the following information for you to help
- explain what makes the new 7000-FASST, so fast! (Excuse the pun)

- PARALLEL PROCESSING
-
- Most of the existing hard drive controllers are not what you
- would call intelligent. Your CPU has to tell it where to get the
- data, wait for the drive to find the data, and then it has to
- move one byte at a time from the controller to memory. Although
- inefficient, this process can be speeded up by using a 20 Mhz
- 80386 CPU to move data. Thus a faster processor will give faster
- data rates. Is this why mainframes have such fast drives? NO!
-
- A mainframe CPU only issues a command for a specific chunk of
- data and then goes on to another task. It has an INTELLIGENT
- controller with its own CPU which figures out where to get the
- data, waits for the data, actually moves the data into memory for
- the CPU, and then notifies the CPU when it is done! Once the
- command is issued by the CPU, it will take the same short amount
- of time for an INTELLIGENT controller to put the requested data
- in memory, no matter what the clock rate of the CPU! Thus a 1
- Mhz CPU will have almost the same data throughput as a 40 Mhz
- CPU--plus, both processors are working in parallel!
-
- THIS IS WHAT WE HAVE DONE ON A DESKTOP!
-
- This is only a small part of the beginning of the story of the
- SST. If you would like to keep informed regarding our vision of a
- MAINFRAME-ON-A-DESK, please call or write us at:
