  4.      Welcome users of Mister ED!

  6.      Mister ED was started by a couple of programmers who were
  7.          looking for the ultimate programmer's editor but were unable to
  8.      find it.  Now written, Mister ED is powerful, fast, and easy to
  9.      use.

  15.      Minimum System Requirements
  16.      ---------------------------
  17.      The minimum system requirements to use Mister ED are:
  18.  
  19.      1) An IBM PC, XT, or AT (or close compatible).
  20.      2) PC-DOS or MS-DOS 2.0 or greater.
  21.      3) One disk drive.
  22.      4) Either a color or monochrome monitor with a 80-column
  23.         display.
  24.      5) 256 KB of available memory (although Mister ED will use up
  25.         to 640 KB if it is available).
  26.      6) ED.EXE, the editor itself.    No other programs are required
  27.         to operate Mister ED.
  28.      7) A statement in your CONFIG.SYS file allowing at least 20
  29.         files to be open.  Like this:  FILES=20
  30.      8) Although not required, including an additional statement
  31.         in your CONFIG.SYS file alloting 10 or more buffers is a
  32.         good idea.    Like this:  BUFFERS=10

  36.      Files Supplied
  37.      --------------
  38.          Mister ED is supplied on a single 360 KB diskette (3 1/2"
  39.      diskettes are available on special request).  As always, it is
  40.      wise to make backups of those programs you value.  Two files
  41.      are distributed on the Mister ED diskette:

  43.        INSTALL.EXE - A self un-archiving file that contains Mister
  44.              ED, a manual, and several utility programs.  It
  45.              un-archives to the current directory.
  46.  
  47.        READ.ME     - A text file, which includes an explaination of
  48.              what is in INSTALL.EXE and any late breaking
  49.              news on Mister ED.

  52.      You will find the following files in the INSTALL.EXE archive
  53.      file:

  55.        DETAB.DOC   - File explaining the DETAB.EXE utility.
  56.  
  57.        DETAB.EXE   - A utility that strips tab characters from a
  58.              file and replaces them with spaces.
  59.  
  60.            ED.EXE      - The one!  The only!  The world's best editor
  61.              -- Mister ED!    (Aplause)

  63.        MACFIX.EXE  - A utility to translate macro files used
  64.              with previous versions of Mister ED to the
  65.              format of the current release.

  67.        MANUAL.BAT  - A batch file to print MANUAL.PRN.

  69.            MANUAL.PRN  - A copy of Mister ED's manual, ready to be
  70.              printed out.

  72.            MR_ED.HLP   - Mister ED's help file.  Access it through
  73.              Mister ED.

  75.        PURGE.COM   - A powerful utility to delete files and
  76.              subdirectories.

  78.        RELEASE.DOC - A document explaining differences and
  79.                          improvements in Mister ED's last several
  80.              versions.

  86.      MacFix.Exe
  87.      ----------
  88.      The format of the macro files has changed slightly since the
  89.      last release version.    This program will upgrade your macro
  90.      files to Mister ED format.  To run MacFix just be in your
  91.          WBE.MAC directory and type "MACFIX".  MacFix will also take
  92.      optional input parameters, for more information type
  93.          "MACFIX -?".

  96.      Using Mister ED
  97.      ---------------
  98.      To activate Mister ED from the operating system, just type
  99.          "ED".  Additionally, by specifying up to nine file names on the
  100.      command line, Mister ED will load these files into separate
  101.      windows.

  103.          To access Mister ED's Pulldown Menus or Command Mode, or to get
  104.      out of a sticky situation, press the <Esc> key.  The <Esc> key
  105.      can get you out of almost any command unscathed.  Use <Esc> to
  106.      view and activate commands via Pulldown Menus or Command Mode.

  108.      To load a file, press <Esc> to call up the Pulldown Menus and
  109.      select Load in the File Menu.
  110.  
  111.      To save a file, press <Esc> to call up the Pulldown Menus and
  112.      select Save in the File Menu.
  113.  
  114.      To leave Mister ED, press <Esc> to call up the Pulldown Menus
  115.      and select Quit in the File Menu.  You can also press <Q> at
  116.      the main Pulldown Menu with the same result.  Selecting Update
  117.      in the File Menu will save your file before dropping the
  118.      current window (and quitting if it is the only window open).
  119.      Update can also be accessed at the main Pulldown Menu.

  121.      HELP! is just a key away.  Press <Shift F1> to receive context
  122.      sensitive help.  Press it again and you will get the Help
  123.      Index.

  125.      You can configure Mister ED through the Environment, which is
  126.      accessed through the Layout pulldown menu.
