-
- The following files are required for printer installation:
- PRINSTAL.EXE
- PRINTERS.DAT
- PRINTERS.DEF
-
- NOTE: PRINSTAL can also be run from a floppy disk. Place
- the disk with the PRINSTAL files, PRINSTAL.EXE,
- PRINTERS.DAT, and PRINTERS.DEF into your floppy drive.
- Type A:PRINSTAL at the DOS prompt. If you run PRINSTAL
- from a floppy disk, PRINSTAL will automatically prompt you for
- the drive and the directory in which your application program
- is located. In this way PRINSTAL will be able to locate
- PRINTERS.DEF in which to store information about the
- printers you install.
-
-
-
- >>> STARTING PRINSTAL
- To start PRINSTAL, type PRINSTAL from the DOS prompt.
-
- PRINSTAL begins by checking your computer system for a color
- display adaptor. If a color display adaptor is found, PRINSTAL will
- start in color mode, otherwise, PRINSTAL will start in monochrome
- mode.
-
- If you have a monochrome monitor attached to a color display adaptor
- you may wish to start PRINSTAL with a /m.
-
- At the DOS prompt type: PRINSTAL /m
- Press <Enter> to begin PRINSTAL in monochrome mode.
-
- PRINSTAL then reads the master printer file PRINTERS.DAT and the
- installed printer file PRINTERS.DEF (installed with your application
- program).
-
- Once PRINSTAL has found and read these two files the program is
- ready for use.
-
-
- >>> ADDING PRINTERS
- Add printers to the Installed Printer List by selecting them from the
- Master List of Printers. The printers are listed in alphabetical order.
-
- To add printers to the Installed Printer List:
-
- Press INSERT to display the Master Printer List.
-
- Using any of the scrolling keys, move the selection bar
- within the Master Printer List to printer you want to
- install.
-
- Press <Enter> to add the selected printer to the
- Installed Printer List.
-
- The solid arrow(s) in the right hand margin of the Master Printer List
- indicate that there are more entries listed in the direction
- corresponding to the arrow. As you scroll through the list, the scroll
- bar will let you know your relative position in the list.
-
- If you pressed <Insert> but don't want to add a printer, exit the
- Master Printer List:
-
- Press <Esc> to exit Master Printer List and return to
- the Installed Printer List.
-
-
- >>> DELETING PRINTERS
- To remove a printer from the Installed Printer List:
-
- Move the selection bar to the printer you wish to
- delete. Use any of the scrolling keys.
-
- Press the <DELETE> key.
-
- A prompt asks you to verify your request to delete.
- To confirm your request, move the selection bar to
- Delete printer. To cancel your request, move the
- selection bar to Return to list to cancel request and
- return to Installed Printer List. Use the arrow keys or
- First Letter.
-
- >>> EDITING PRINTER DEFINITIONS

-
- PRINSTAL will display the definitions of the printer you want to edit.
- The cursor is positioned in the first field, Printer Name. The <Insert>
- key now toggles between overwrite and insert modes when editing in any
- field. In overwrite mode, the cursor is a blinking dash under the
- character. In insert mode, the cursor is a blinking square.
-
- Move to the field definition you wish to edit. Use the
- arrow and/or page scrolling keys. The return key also
- moves you through the fields.
-
- The second field, Default port, includes a "pick list" of available ports.
- To display the pick list:
-
- Press any key (except a function or scrolling key).
-
- Move the selection bar to desired port definition. Use
- the arrow keys or First Letter.
-
- Press <Enter> to select.
-
-
- Fields 5 through 34 can accept any ASCII character, even characters
- not available on your keyboard. To type an extended ASCII character:
-
- Move the cursor to the position you wish to insert the
- new ASCII character.
-
- Hold down the <Alt> key and type the ASCII decimal
- value on the numeric keypad.
- -OR-
- Press <F3> to display a pick list of extended ASCII
- characters.
-

- displayed as a φ for ease of editing. After editing the
- printer definition, press <Esc> to SAVE EDIT. Any changes
- made during this edit will be lost if you say NO to
- SAVE EDIT.

-
- Press <Esc>.
-
- Move the selection bar to YES to SAVE EDIT.
-
- Press <Enter> to save your changes.
-
- Your changes will be saved, and you will be returned to the Installed
- Printer List.
-
- If you press <Esc> by mistake and wish to continue editing the
- printer record, press <Esc> again. You will be returned to the
- printer record you were working on. Continue editing as desired.
-
-
- >>> ERROR MESSAGES
-
- ** ERROR: PRINTERS.DAT File Not Found or Damaged
- When PRINSTAL begins, it reads the main data file of printers. If the
- program can't find the file PRINTERS.DAT or the file is damaged, the

- point:
-
- Place the PRINSTAL (Printer Installation) disk in a
- floppy disk drive and enter the letter of that drive.
- -OR-
- Press <Esc> to abort. Refer to the PRINSTAL
- installation section of the instructions to continue.
-
-
- ** ERROR: PRINTERS.DEF File Not Found or Damaged
- After PRINSTAL reads the PRINTERS.DAT file, it searches for the file
- PRINTERS.DEF, installed in the same directory as your application
- program.
-
- If PRINSTAL is unable to locate this file or it is damaged, it will display
- an error message. You have three options at this point.
-
- New Path

- keys or First Letter.
-
- Press <Enter> to select.
-
- Type the name of the disk and directory containing the
- PRINTERS.DEF file, and press <Enter>.
-
- PRINSTAL will then read the PRINTERS.DEF file from the
- specified path.
-
- Create
- You also have the option to create a new PRINTERS.DEF file
- in the path that is currently displayed.
-
- Move the selection bar to Create. Use the arrow keys
- or First Letter.
- Press <Enter> to select.
-
- Exit
- This will exit PRINSTAL and return you to the DOS prompt.
-
- Move the selection bar to Exit. Use the arrow keys or
- First Letter.
- Press <Enter> to select.
-
-
- ** ERROR: Duplicate Printer Installed
- An error message is displayed if you select a printer that is already
- installed. Duplicate names for printers are not allowed.
-
- Re-name an installed printer by using the EDIT <F2>
- key. See instructions on Editing for further use of the
- <F2> key.
-
- Press <Esc> to exit the error message and return to
- the Installed Printer List.
-
-
- >>> EXITING PRINSTAL

- making any editing changes, you are ready to exit PRINSTAL. The
- completed list of Installed Printers is now ready to be used by the
- application program that PRINSTAL came with.
-
- Press <Esc> until you are at the Installed Printer List
- screen.
