-
- The DataWorks, Inc. is a software integration/systems design
- corporation based in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. We specialize in
- networked RDBMS's, process-control, and information systems.
-
- The company started in August, 1989, and went corporate in
- April, 1991. Currently we have four (4)
- professional/knowledgable programmers whose experience ranges
- from user-interfaces (graphical or text) to
- process-control/on-line time monitoring systems that monitor
- automated machinery in factories/plants. Additionally, we have
- two business personnel (one a major in tax accounting, the
- other a specialist in marketting and bus. administration).
- We also have one Novell technical service and installation
- specialist, and one Netware/NetBIOS developer who specializes in
- Netware IPX/NetBIOS communications software.
-
- We started DataWorks BBS! in late September, 1989. We wanted a
- BBS up to support our clients, and to become a central point of
- information exchange for many other (fellow) programmers.
-
- For two (2) years now, we have done well in attracting a purely
- technical following. By this we mean that we have personnel that
- have contacts with many technical support staff in large software
- institutions, and in corporations. When a user asks a question
- that stumps everyone, a DataWorks rep. will get
- answers from the source - whether it be Borland, Microsoft,
- Lotus, or whoever - we get answers that provide solutions.
-
- In 1990, a total of $12,000 (approximately) was spent on
- DataWorks BBS! toward this end. We are serious about our
- business and our board, and we are now trying to provide a wider
- area service to all developers/programmers on an
- international scale.
-
- Although there are many conferences on many existing nets out
- there today that have programmer's interest areas, we would like
- to implement a purely technical net. I'm sure there are nets out
- there at this point that are aiming for this goal, but we are
- not familiar with any. We would like to see Dev-Net become a
- standard technical network, and ideally, bring all technical
- interest areas to this net.
-
- We provide support on CompuServe <TM> for many of our clients right
- now, but CompuServe <TM) is not an easy board to learn to
- navigate, and it cost a fair amount of money! We also
- participate in the many interest areas already found on nets
- like SmartNet and U'NI-Net. However, the interest areas on these
- nets do not seem as active as we believe they could be. Don't
- missunderstand, we believe these nets to be some of the best
- nets available, and the activity on them is nearly unsurpassed
- (in our feable opinions). However, we want to target areas
- around the world where we can start purely technical nets.
-
- We have included some interest areas in this documentation.
- These areas encompass PC users and Mainframe users. We believe
- that if we're really going to get a good following on the net,
- we need to target as much of the programmer's/developer's areas
- available today, as possible.
-
- Now, the primary interest from our standpoint, in starting this
- net, is that we can set up a wide-area net that users can
- participate in and not have to pay online costs for. This is
- important to us because we feel that getting good online
- support, either by voice or by computer, is hard to find, and
- generally fairly expensive when it can be found. However, if a
- Net goes up between cooperative boards around the world, the
- expense is obsorbed by the Sysops, and not the users. Because of
- this, users are much more likely to become active in the net and
- participate.
-
- Mail nets and bulletin boards that are very successful are so
- because they provide a valid and well maintained service for
- their users. We believe that a participation in Dev-Net by
- serious, professional Sysops and users nation-wide, will
- institute what can become one of the most popular technically
- oriented nets available to developers/programmers.

- The Net...
-
-
- DataWorks BBS! is the Host of the network. Currently, there are
- no fees, or strict requirements to meet to become a regional hub
- on this net.
-
- There is an information form included at the end of this
- document that needs to be completed and either mailed, faxed, or
- uploaded to DataWorks BBS!.
-
- DataWorks BBS! will only allow regional hubs to echo through our
- board. All local hubs for each region will have to echo through
- that regional hub.
-
- Though some large cities literally have thousands of boards
- operating in them, we will still be careful in monitoring how many
- regionals get started in any given area, so as to cut down on
- the possibility of non-technical or unprofessional activity on
- the net, and to protect the territory of any particular regional.
-
- It would be ideal if all regionals on the net used high-speed,
- HST or Hayes v.32 modems, but this is not going to be a
- requirement. DataWorks BBS! started out with a USR Courier 2400
- PC modem. We know that there are still thousands (?) of users
- out there still using 2400. However, the time on-line with the
- Host can be expensive at 2400 baud, and this can easily lead to
- discouragement, and the possible loss of a regional's activity.
- We are making this statement because we want Sysops that may
- want to be regionals to be aware that if they are using 2400
- baud modems, that it can become quite an investment to echo to a
- Host, every day of the week, every month of the year!
-
- NOTE: The DataWorks, Inc. is an Authorized Dealer for US
- Robotics, and we keep on-line a current information sheet for
- the Sysop's Deals that US Robotics offers all sysops of
- full-time bulletin boards. As a Dealer, we cannot even beat the
- prices that US Robotics directly offers sysops, and if you're
- interested, you will find their direct pricing deals very
- attractive and affordable.
-
- The only real requirements for regionals are there:
-
- They use at least 2400 baud modems.
- They echo at least once every 24 hour period.
- They moderate their hub/regional area and
- help provide quick response to messages.
-
- Other than that, there really aren't any other requirements,
- aside from completing the information sheet attached at the end
- of this document, and sending it in to DataWorks BBS!.
-
- For local hubs that regionals will be sponsoring, the regional
- is responsible for the local hub sysop filling out the
- information sheet at the end of this document, and then getting
- that information sheet in to DataWorks BBS!. Also, a regional
- cannot charge a fee of any sort for the local hub to participate
- using that regional for echoing. We realize that there are many
- technically oriented boards out there today that do charge an
- access fee/membership fee for users to participate on their
- board. However, we are not charging the regionals and do not
- feel it would be fair for them to charge their local hubs. If
- the regional is a "fee charging" board, perhaps that regional
- can in some way set up an account for local hub sysops that does
- not require them to pay a fee for access to the regional's mail
- door for echoing.
-
- Dev-Net will be a .QWK compatible mail system. We will be
- setting up the Host to echo with RoseMail. DataWorks BBS! is
- working closely with RoseMedia (Toronto, Canada) in configuring
- our network with the best NetMail software available today
- for bulletin board systems.
-
- Any/all Sysops that join Dev-Net and become a Regional Hub
- are entitled to a complimentary copy or RoseMail and RoseReader,
- the state-of-the-art mail and offline reader/file transfer
- packages available today.
-
-
- Currently, DataWorks BBS! operates on an 80386/33 with
- 8 meg. of RAM running at 60ns. and over 315 meg. of
- hard drive space available. Our modems are Courier 14.4
- HST's. Our system performs smoothly and very fast.
- We have three nodes available, all off of one phone
- number.

-
-
- We realize that there are many more interest areas for
