  16.      Definition of Shareware. . .
  17.  
  18.           Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software before
  19.      buying it. If you try a shareware program and continue using it, you are
  20.      expected to register. Individual programs differ on details -- some
  21.      request registration while others require it, some specify a maximum
  22.      trial period. With registration, you get anything from the simple right
  23.      to continue using the software to an updated program with printed manual.

  25.           Copyright laws apply to both shareware and commercial software, and
  26.      the copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific exceptions
  27.      as stated below. Shareware authors are accomplished programmers, just
  28.      like commercial authors, and the programs are of comparable quality. (In
  29.      both cases, there are good programs and bad ones!) The main difference is
  30.      in the method of distribution. The author specifically grants the right
  31.      to copy and distribute the software, either to all and sundry or to a
  32.      specific group. For example, some authors require written
  33.      permission before a commercial disk vendor may copy their shareware.

  35.           Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You
  36.      should find software that suits your needs and pocketbook, whether it's
  37.      commercial or shareware. The shareware system makes fitting your needs
  38.      easier, because you can try before you buy. And because the overhead is
  39.      low, prices are low also. Shareware has the ultimate money-back guarantee
  40.      -- if you don't use the product, you don't pay for it.

  44.           Users of ARIS Version Tracking System (AVTS) must accept this 
  45.      disclaimer of warranty: AVTS is supplied as-is.  The author disclaims 
  46.      all warranties, expressed or implied, including, without limitation, 
  47.      the warranties of merchantability and of fitness for any purpose. 
  48.      The author assumes no liability for damages, direct or consequential, 
  49.      which may result from the use of AVTS.

  53.           Individual Registration. . .

  55.           AVTS is a copyrighted shareware program by Alexander Riedel,
  56.      President, ARIS Germany. The evaluation version of AVTS is offered at 
  57.      no charge to any potential user for evaluation.  Feel free to share it 
  58.      with your friends, but please do not give it away altered or as part 
  59.      of another system.  The essence of "user-supported" software is to 
  60.      provide personal computer users with quality software without high 
  61.      prices, and yet to provide incentive for programmers to continue to 
  62.      develop new products.

  64.           If you find this program useful and find that you are using AVTS
  65.      after a 60-day trial period, you must make a registration payment of $30.
  66.      Checks may be made payable to Alexander Riedel or ARIS.  You will be
  67.      sent by return mail a registered copy of the latest version of AVTS
  68.      with hard copy of the user's manual.

  70.           Registration also entitles you to user support by mail or CompuServe
  71.      E-mail for at least one year and to a free copy by mail of the next major
  72.      update to AVTS.

  74.           In addition, if you are a CompuServe subscriber and so wish, you may
  75.      be added to an E-mail list and receive periodic upgrades of AVTS by
  76.      CompuServe E-mail.  These files will be transmitted as binary files
  77.      compressed using the PKZIP utility.  Please indicate your desire in the
  78.      area provided on the registration form.

  80.           You may order your registration by one of several ways:

  95.      For a "corporate" user, in which a company wishes to provide AVTS as a 
  96.      workplace resource for employees, the company's registration may be 
  97.      extended to a license for multiple users in any combination of two ways:
  98.  
  99.           1.  The single-user license conferred with original $30 registration
  100.      may be extended to any number of additional users at the rate of $7.50
  101.      per additional user, with no increment in the original benefits (ie., no
  102.      additional hard copies of manual will be sent, only one copy of the
  103.      future upgrade will be sent, technical support provided only to the
  104.      original registrant).

  106.           I recognize that the number of users afforded access to AVTS in a
  107.      large company or network will vary as employees come and go and users are
  108.      added and subtracted, and so I ask only for a good-faith estimate, BUT
  109.      based on the total number of users afforded access, NOT on some lower
  110.      estimate of the number of users who might be using AVTS
  111.      simultaneously.  The company may at its own expense print this number of
  112.      additional manuals and disks to distribute to the added users.  I have
  113.      priced this license extension so reasonably that this additional cost per
  114.      additional authorized user is affordable for the smallest to the largest
  115.      company, and represents a small fraction of the workplace productivity
  116.      gain benefiting each user.

  118.           2.   The original license may be extended to additional users at the
  119.      rate of $15 per user, and I will send one complete registration package
  120.      (disk plus manual and any current material fringe benefits) per
  121.      additional user.

  123.           In either case of license extension, the users added are licensed to
  124.      use AVTS ONLY in the workplace for which the license extension was
  125.      purchased.  Any users who wish copies for their personal use MUST
  126.      individually register AVTS with ARIS.

  129.           Shareware Distribution. . .
  130.  
  131.           Distributors and BBS sysops recognized by the Association of
  132.      Shareware Professionals (ASP) as adhering to its guidelines for shareware
  133.      distributors may begin offering AVTS in their catalogs/BBS services
  134.      immediately.
  135.      Other distributors whose only remuneration is a nominal fee for the disk
  136.      itself, and whose literature makes it clear to their buyers that the 
  137.      program material must be separately purchased from the author, may also 
  138.      offer AVTS immediately, but should inform me so that I can provide them 
  139.      periodic updates.  Distributors who wish to sell AVTS packaged as or in 
  140.      a retail product must contact me, and are NOT authorized to distribute 
  141.      this version of AVTS without prior approval.
