OR WHEN do the leak detection requirements go into effect? « Do you want to know about: an existing tank a new tank, or only about piping? t Existing-Tank Leak Detection Options If you have a tank that is already in the ground (an existing tank) you have ìthree choices of leak detection: monthly monitoring monthly inventory and annual tank tightness testing monthly inventory control and tank tightness testing every 5 years REMEMBER... YOUR PIPING ALSO NEEDS LEAK DETECTION. (Check under the piping section to see what piping requirements are.) m Types of monthly monitoring for existing tanks You can choose: o automatic tank gauging, o vapor monitoring, o interstitial monitoring, o groundwater monitoring, or o other methods which you can prove work as well as the methods listed above. Since you already have your tank in the ground WHEN you have to do this depends on when your tank was installed. m Monthly inventory and annual tank testing
You may use monthly inventory control and annual tank testing until December 22, 1998. After December 22, 1998 you must use &another method of tank testing. t t Topic '*'. Look for more advice on this being a good thing to do. t Monthly inventory and tank testing every five years You can use this method until December 22, 1998; OR, For only 10 years after you add corrosion protection or spill/overfill prevention -- whichever is LATER. REMEMBER: ! The deadline for installation of leak detection on your tank depends on WHEN IT WAS INSTALLED m Leak detection choices for new tanks If you are installing a new tank you have two choices:
monthly monitoring or
monthly inventory control and tank tightness testing every five years. REMEMBER YOUR TANK'S PIPING ALSO MUST HAVE LEAK DETECTION (Check under the piping heading to see these requirements.) m Monthly monitoring choices You can choose: o automatic tank gauging, o vapor monitoring, o interstitial monitoring, o groundwater monitoring, or o other methods which you can prove work as well as the methods listed above. e
Monthly inventory control and tank tightness testing for new tanks You can only use inventory control and tank tightness testing for 10 years after you install your tank. Then you will have to put in 'a monthly monitoring system. REMEMBER you will need to have: o One tightness test when your tank is installed; o Another tightness test 5 years after installation; and, o 10 years after installation you must have monthly monitoring.

Look for more advice on this being a good thing to do. k Leak detection -- piping only Does your tank have: pressurized piping OR suction piping? a Two kinds of leak detection for pressure piping By December 22, 1990 you must have two kinds of leak detection on pressurized piping. You must choose one of these methods: o automatic flow restrictor, o automatic shutoff device, or, o continuous alarm system AND, One of these methods: o annual line testing or o a monthly monitoring method. m Monthly monitoring for pressurized piping You CANNOT use automatic tank gauging. But you CAN use: o vapor monitoring, o interstitial monitoring, o groundwater monitoring, or o other methods that work as well. o Leak detection for suction piping You have three choices if your tank has suction piping: o monthly monitoring, o line testing every three years, or possibly o no requirements if your tank meets certain criteria. o Conditions for exclusion of suction piping from leak detection requirements No leak detection is required on suction piping IF: o Below-grade piping is sloped so that the contents of the piping will drain back into the storage tank when the suction is released; AND, o Only one check valve is included in each suction line, with that valve located directly below the suction pump; AND, o You can prove your piping meets both the conditions listed above. m When you must meet leak detection requirements When you must comply depends on whether you are o Installing a new tank AFTER December 1988; or, o Had a tank in the ground BEFORE December 1988. e New-tank compliance date If you installed the tank AFTER December 1988, You must have leak detection on the tank and piping RIGHT NOW.
