-
- Abstract
- --------
- Zip Control is an OS/2 program which uses a PM interface to access
- the freeware programs UnZip.exe and Zip.exe. UnZip and Zip are
- command line programs which are compatible with versions 1 & 2 of the
- DOS PkZIP program. UnZip and Zip are available as freeware on many
- BBSs which have OS/2 libraries, on the IBM NSC BBS, and on
- CompuServe (OS2USER forum, Library 4 for UNZ512.EXE and
- ZIP201.ZIP). Zip and UnZip are freeware products of Info-ZIP.
- Zip Control is a shareware product of RPF Software. Info-ZIP and
- RPF Software are independent organizations. (See section below on
- Shareware.)
-
- Zip Control is available on CompuServe (OS2SHARE Forum, Library 1, &
- OS2USER Forum, Library 4), Pete Norloff's OS/2 Shareware BBS
- (703.385.4325), Fernwood BBS (203.483.0348), Pandora's Box
- (619.291.9716), Pyramid BBS (415.494.7497), Prodigy OS/2 Club,
- America On Line, and other BBSs which carry OS/2 software.
- Primary support is via email and in CompuServe's OS2SHARE Forum,
- Section One (OS/2 Shareware).
-
- Zip Control is copyrighted shareware, it is NOT PUBLIC DOMAIN, it is
- NOT FREE. You are encouraged to use it for a reasonable evaluation
- period (21 days) to see if it is software which is helpful to you
- and which you wish to continue using. If you do decide to continue
- using Zip Control, you MUST register your copy of Zip Control by
- filling out the form in ORDER.DOC and sending it along with the
- registration fee to RPF Software.
-
- Alternatively, and perhaps easier, you may register using the
- CompuServe online registration service. The registration fee will
- be added to your CompuServe bill. To use this method, GO SWREG.
- The registration number is 1373, or search for "RPF Zip Control."
-
- The registration fee is currently US$35.00.
-
- See Zip Control online Help for assistance in using Zip Control.
-
- Known Problems
- --------------
- - Password protected zip files are not currently supported.
- Attempts to unzip such files may stall Zip Control, and
- you will have to use the window task list to close Zip
- Control. You may then also have to do Ctl-Esc and then
- press Enter (when prompted) to complete the closure of
- Zip Control.
-
- The cause for this is our current inability to intercept
- UnZip.exe's request for the password.
-
- - Running Zip Control from the command line (versus from a
- Desktop object) causes parts of the main window to not
- display. Covering the window with another application
- and then uncovering it restores the window properly.
-
- Zip Control Error Messages
- --------------------------
- - Most users find Zip Control easy to use and register the software
- without reporting any problems. However, other users may have a
- different operating environment or may use Zip Control with .zip
- files where Zip.exe or UnZip.exe send Zip Control error messages.
- In those cases, the ZC users will see a general error message from
- ZC which offers to display the error message reported by Zip.exe or
- UnZip.exe. It further offers to display additional information
- which you may wish to report to RPF Software.
-
- At that point RPF Software duplicates the problem and, if the
- problem is caused by Zip Control, makes the necessary software
- repairs to properly handle the problem. A new version of ZC is
- then made available.
-
- - When the error message offers to display the specific error message
- as reported by zip.exe or unzip.exe, this alerts alert you to a
- possible problem with the .zip file with which you are working.
-
- Futures

-
- Installation Instructions
- -------------------------
- Unzip the delivery files to a new directory, such as \ZipCntrl.
- Create a workplace shell object which references ZipCntrl.exe
- (with full path) as the program name and enter the same path as
- the working directory. Copy the ZipCntrl.hlp file to a directory
- which is listed in the "SET HELP" line of your Config.sys file.
-
- Run Zip Control by either double clicking on the Zip Control
- object on the desktop OR by dragging one or more .zip files
- to the Zip Control desktop object (using the right mouse
- button). If multiple .zip files are dragged to the Zip Control
- object, multiple versions of Zip Control will be started, each
- displayed on top of the other. You can then use these to perform
- simultaneous unzips or to investigate the various .zip files,
- comparing dates of zipped files, and viewing zipped files.
-
- If an "association" is established for *.zip files (to the Zip
- Control desktop object), Zip Control can be started by double
- clicking .zip files displayed using the Drives object. To
- establish the association, open the Settings window for the
- Zip Control desktop object and select the "Association" page
- (tab). In the lower section of the page, enter "*.zip"
- (without the quotes) in the "New Name" field. Then select "Add."
-
- If there had been a previous association established with another
- program, that association should be removed from either the other
- program's desktop object OR from the other program's .EXE file (via
- the Drives object), before establishing a new association with Zip
- Control. To determine whether a previous association is in effect
- and to what program or object, do a right mouse button click on a
- Drives listing of a .zip file, then select the arrow to the right
- of "Open." Any current associations will be listed below the word
- "Settings."
-
- Use the "Paths" page of the "Settings" notebook in Zip Control
- to define the path where .zip files will usually be found,
- such as C:\DOWNLOAD. Also, define a default output directory,
- such as C:\SCRATCH and a work location directory. If you do not
- define a Work Location, the default work location directory will
- be set to the directory in which zipcntrl.exe resides. A change
- in Work Location does not take effect until restarting Zip Control.
-
- Note: A subdirectory, ~ZipWork, of the work location directory
- is used for Zip Control temporary files created when using "View",
- "Print", "New", "Add", and "Delete". The temporary files should be
- automatically cleaned up. However, if they are not automatically
- deleted, you may delete them at any time. The temporary files
- should all be located in the ~ZipWork subdirectory.
-
- Disclaimer - Agreement
- ----------------------
- Users of Zip Control must accept this disclaimer of warranty:
- "Zip Control is supplied as is. The author disclaims all
- warranties, expressed or implied, including, without limitation,
- the warranties of merchantability and of fitness for any purpose.
- The author assumes no liability for damages, direct or consequential,
- which may result from the use of Zip Control."
-
- Zip Control is a "shareware program" and is provided at no charge
- to the user for evaluation. Feel free to share it with your
- friends, but please do not give it away altered or as part of
- another system. The essence of "user-supported" software is to
- provide personal computer users with quality software without
- high prices, and yet to provide incentive for programmers to
- continue to develop new products. If you find this program
- useful and find that you are using Zip Control and continue to use
- Zip Control after a reasonable trial period, you must make a
- registration payment of $35.00 to RPF Software. The $35.00
- registration fee will license one copy for use on any one
- computer at any one time. You must treat this software just like
- a book. An example is that this software may be used by any
- number of people and may be freely moved from one computer
- location to another, so long as there is no possibility of it
- being used at one location while it's being used at another.
- Just as a book cannot be read by two different persons at the
- same time.
-
- Commercial users of Zip Control must register and pay for their
- copies of Zip Control within 30 days of first use or their license
- is withdrawn. Site License arrangements are available. See
- ORDER.DOC for details.
-
- Anyone distributing Zip Control for any kind of remuneration must
- first contact RPF Software at the address below for authorization.
- This authorization will be automatically granted to distributors
- recognized by the ASP (see below) as adhering to its guidelines for
- shareware distributors, and such distributors may begin offering
- Zip Control immediately (However RPF Software must still be advised
- so that the distributor can be kept up-to-date with the latest
- version of Zip Control.).
-
- You are encouraged to pass a copy of Zip Control along to your
- friends for evaluation. Please encourage them to register their
- copy if they find that they can use it. All registered users
- will receive automatic notices of new releases.
-
- Note: Do not distribute either your Zip Control Registration
- number or the ZipCntrl.ini file (which contains your
- Registration number).
-
- ================== General Shareware Information =================
-
- Definition of Shareware
- -----------------------
- Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software
- before buying it. If you try a Shareware program and continue
- using it, you are expected to register. Individual programs
- differ on details -- some request registration while others
- require it, some specify a maximum trial period. With
- registration, you get anything from the simple right to continue
- using the software to an updated program with printed manual.
-
- Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software,
- and the copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific
- exceptions as stated below. Shareware authors are accomplished
- programmers, just like commercial authors, and the programs are
- of comparable quality. (In both cases, there are good programs
- and bad ones!) The main difference is in the method of
- distribution. The author specifically grants the right to copy
- and distribute the software, either to all and sundry or to a
- specific group. For example, some authors require written
- permission before a commercial disk vendor may copy their
- Shareware.
-
- Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You
- should find software that suits your needs and pocketbook,
- whether it's commercial or Shareware. The Shareware system makes
- fitting your needs easier, because you can try before you buy.
- And because the overhead is low, prices are low also. Shareware
- has the ultimate money-back guarantee -- if you don't use the
- product, you don't pay for it.
-
- Association of Shareware Professionals (ASP)
- --------------------------------------------
- This program is produced by a member of the Association of Shareware
- Professionals (ASP). ASP wants to make sure that the shareware
- principle works for you. If you are unable to resolve a
- shareware-related problem with an ASP member by contacting the member
- directly, ASP may be able to help. The ASP Ombudsman can help you
- resolve a dispute or problem with an ASP member, but does not provide
- technical support for members' products. Please write to the ASP
- Ombudsman at 545 Grover Road, Muskegon, MI USA 49442-9427, Fax
- 616-788-2765, or send a CompuServe message via CompuServe Mail to ASP
- Ombudsman 70007,3536.
