  6. As an avid user of the original Series 3 Finance program, I 
  7. was rather disappointed when the Series 3A version didn't 
  8. give me the same functionality.  I therefore decided to write 
  9. a program for the 3A which took the best ideas of both 
  10. programs, and added some extra modules which I would find 
  11. useful.  This program is the result.
  12.  
  13. Versions 1.0-1.7 were well received, so I have incorporated 
  14. the majority of comments and  suggestions  I received  into 
  15. this latest version, along with a number   of  other 
  16. enhancements. As it stands, this Shareware version is still 
  17. only intended as a demo, and therefore will  allow only a 
  18. limited number of items, such as  3 Accounts, 5 Standing 
  19. Orders, 5 Budget Categories, 5 Shares and 5 Rooms for the 
  20. Home Inventory.  Registration will give you more realistic 
  21. values, such as 20 Accounts  and 50 Standing Orders in  
  22. each Group, and  50 Budget Items, 50 Shares and 20 
  23. Rooms.

  45. Registration gets you a personalised registration code to 
  46. remove the 'nag' screens, and allow full use of the program 
  47. (<PSION-S>).  Note that you will not need a new copy of 
  48. the program, all the functionality is in there, it just needs the 
  49. code to 'unlock' it.  I will also ensure that this code remains 
  50. forward compatible for future versions of the program so, 
  51. unlike other programs, I will not be asking for a further fee 
  52. for an upgrade.  Upgrades will normally be put onto 
  53. CompuServe, AOL, CIX, Internet and various BBS, and 
  54. those of you with E-mail addresses will be notified.

  102. To Install the program, carry out the following actions:
  103.  
  104. 1.    Copy BANKS3A.APP to your \APP\ directory.
  105.  
  106. 2.    Generate a Sub-directory \BANK\ under the APP directory, 
  107. i.e. \APP\BANK\
  108.  
  109. 3.    Copy BANKS3A1.OVL, BANKS3A2.OVL and BANKS3A3.OVL to the 
  110. \APP\BANK\  Sub-directory.  These modules are ESSENTIAL to run the program.  
  111.  
  112. 4.    You can then copy BANKSBUD.OVL, BANKSSHA.OVL, BANKSPET.OVL, 
  113. BANKSHOU.OVL, BANKSPLN.OVL, BANKSUTI.OVL, and BANKSEXP.OVL to the sub-directory  
  114. \APP\BANK\ if you wish to use the Budget, Shares, Petrol, House Contents, Annual 
  115. Planner, Utilitiy Tracker and Expense Account modules, which are all optional.
  116. Also copy BANKS3A.PIC to \APP\BANK\ if you want the opening picture, although 
  117. this is also optional.

  119. 5.    If you want to use the optional Print system, then copy the file 
  120. BANKSPRT.OVL into the \APP\BANK\ Sub-directory, and put the S3APRINT.DYL 
  121. file into an \OPD\ directory. (Note that this latter file is common to 
  122. all my programs, so if you are running more than one of them, you will need
  123. only one copy of this file)

  125. 6.    If you want to use the optional On-Line Help system, then copy the 
  126. BANKS3A.HLP file and any of the optional module Help files you require, to 
  127. the \APP\BANK\ Sub-directory.
  128.  
  129. 7.   Install BANKS3A.APP using <PSION-I> as described in the Psion manual.
  130.  
  131. If you fancy a challenge, you can learn everything you need 
  132. to about the program by playing with it and checking the 
  133. effect of each MENU selection, as well as the effect of 
  134. pressing <ENTER>, <DELETE>, <TAB> or <ESC> in each 
  135. screen.  However, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, at least 
  136. read Part 1 of this set of instructions first. I suggest you then 
  137. work through the tutorial in Part 2, which will familiarize 
  138. you with all the basic capabilities of the program.  If you do 
  139. 'fly blind' and get into trouble, please read the rest of this 
  140. document before asking me to help.  The majority of 
  141. questions I receive could have been answered by reading this 
  142. document.  Those that couldnÆt I have included in the FAQ 
  143. file.
  144.  
  145. I have designed this documentation in 4 parts, based on the 
  146. premise that most people are like me and never read the 
  147. manual.  Part 1 is the Important Notes, please read this at 
  148. least.  Part 2 is a quick tutorial to get you started, Part 3 
  149. moves onto other aspects of the program and covers the 
  150. optional modules and Part 4 goes through the more 
  151. advanced functions.  In the ASCII text version of the 
  152. instructions these are separate files, in the Word format they 
  153. are all in one document.
  154.  
  155. PART 1:   Important Points to Note:   
  156.  
  157. 1.    The program is designed to work with all the DATA 
  158. files on one disc.  If you run Groups on different drives (A:, 
  159. B: or M:) then you will run into problems with some of the 
  160. data files which are common to all Groups, i.e. Currency, 
  161. Budget, Shares and Fuel.  Therefore, please decide, before 
  162. you start, on which disc you wish to have your data files.  
  163. (There is, however, nothing to stop you copying ALL the 
  164. files to a different drive at a later date, as long as they all 
  165. remain on the same disc.)  The program regularly saves and 
  166. overwrites the data files to avoid problems with data loss. 
  167. This means that you should NOT hold the data files on a 
  168. Flash SSD, but hold them on a RAM SSD or in Internal 
  169. memory.  On the other hand, the program file and the 
  170. overlays themselves can reside on a different disc, such as a 
  171. Flash SSD.  In fact, this is the ideal solution, as you would 
  172. not wish to use up valuable internal memory.  (I have to 
  173. admit that some REALLY advanced users do hold data files 
  174. on 2 different disks, which allows them multiple options of 
  175. the common files, however, I would not recommend this to 
  176. the novice)
  177.  
  178. 2.    The configuration file and registration details are 
  179. saved on your default disc in the \OPD\ directory, so don't be 
  180. surprised if you seem to lose that information (and 
  181. registration) if you change default discs or delete these files.  
  182.  
  183. 3.    Please  do NOT try changing the name of a Group 
  184. from the system screen.  The title you use for a Group is 
  185. used for all the data files, not just the one shown under the 
  186. icon.  If you do wish to rename a Group, simply use the 
  187. 'Save As' file command from within the Program, to save the 
  188. Group under a new name, change to that new Group, then 
  189. use the 'Delete Group' command to get rid of the original.
  190.  
  191. 4.    I have provided a BACKUP and RESTORE option 
  192. (<PSION-B> and <PSION-R> in the Accounts screen) to 
  193. enable you to keep a COMPLETE copy of all your data files 
  194. somewhere else on the system.  Although there have only 
  195. been 2 recorded cases of complete data loss, both with V1.2 
  196. and caused by low System Memory, and subsequent versions 
  197. of the program protect against that problem,  I am not so 
  198. arrogant as to say that there isn't a 'bug' in there waiting to 
  199. trap the unwary.   Personally I use this option every couple 
  200. of days, as well as Backing up regularly on a PC.  I think the 
  201. program is safe, but I still wouldn't trust it completely.  
  202. Basically, if you lose some data and you haven't kept a backup 
  203. of some description, don't expect any sympathy from me !!
  204.  
  205. 5.    To register the program, press <PSION-S> and 
  206. CAREFULLY enter the code obtainable from me (or my 
  207. agent) for the registration fee.
  208.  
  209. 6.    Important Note for Non-United Kingdom Users:    
  210. Before starting to enter data, press <PSION-C> and select 
  211. your country as the Base Currency and the Group Currency.  
  212. If your country is not shown, jump forward to the 'Currency' 
  213. part of Part 3 to see how to add your country.
