  4. Welcome to the demonstration version of the VT100 emulator for the Psion   
  5. Series 3a. You can use it for an unlimited time to test the product. It has all
  6.  
  7. the features of the real product *except* that the demo version only works at 
  8. 300 bps. 
  9.    
  10. This file should be provided to you in a file called VT100V25.ZIP 
  11. which should also contain 
  12.  
  13. 1)     This file  VTDEMO.TXT in ASCII format
  14. 2)     VT100SLO.APP - the demonstration version of our VT100 product 
  15. 3)     VT1000.TXT - product information and how to buy the real thing 
  16. 4)     UUDECODE.EXE - needed if you take delivery of VT100 through
  17.                       the Internet
  18.                    
  19. If any of these files are missing, please go back to your source. Please do not
  20. distribute any of these files without the whole ZIP file.

  23. 1.    INSTALLATION  
  24.   
  25. To install VT100 from a PC, connect Psion to PC using 3-link, start  
  26. Remote Link on the 3a, and type MCLINK on the PC. Then type (on the PC)  
  27.   COPY VT100SLO.APP REM::M:\APP\  
  28. This copies the VT100 application to the internal (M:) disk of the 3a.  
  29.   
  30. Install VT100 on the Psion system screen like any other application:  
  31. Select the Install menu option from the system screen, locate VT100SLO.APP  
  32. in the application list, and then press Enter.  
  33.

  35. 2.   GETTING STARTED  
  36.   
  37. Make sure the 3-link serial link is plugged into the 3a, then start VT100   
  38. from the System screen by pressing Enter when the highlight is on the VT100  
  39. icon. The screen should be empty, apart from a status line along the bottom. 
  40.  
  41. Select Special/Port and Special/Handshakes to configure the serial   
  42. communications, and away you go! Press <Help> for assistance with options.  
  43.   
  44. To test the program, you can try dialling UK Electronic Yellow Pages.  
  45. This is a free access service, which is available at local telephone  
  46. rates throughout the UK.  
  47.   
  48. To dial this service within the UK, connect your 3-link to a modem and  
  49. type

  52. or ATDT0345444444   if you have a tone dial modem.

  54. If you are dialling from outside the UK, you can access the same system
  55. by dialling the international access code, then dialling 44 734 591199.

  67. 3.   NUMERIC KEYPAD  
  68.   
  69. As there is no numeric keypad on the 3a, the VT-100 keypad is mapped onto   
  70. the main keyboard. The <diamond> key turns on keypad mode for one character  
  71.  
  72. An indicator on the status line shows when keypad mode is toggled "on".  
  73. After <diamond>, press a key from the left-hand table to generate the   
  74. keypad key from the right-hand table:

  84. It soon becomes second-nature, and there is a diagram in the help system.  
  85. You can cancel <diamond> by pressing it again.  
  86.   
  87. For example, to generate keypad 4 followed by F3, you would press <diamond>
  88. then <a>, then <diamond> then <3>.

  90. The vertical bar symbol can be generated with <diamond> then <b>.

  93. 4.    MENU OPTIONS  
  94.   
  95. File

  97.   Save Settings (Psion + O)  
  98.     Saves the current terminal options into the file \DAT\Vt100.cfg on
  99.     the default drive, which is usually M:. These 
  100.     settings are reloaded next time VT100 is started. To get back to a   
  101.     "clean" set of defaults, select Screen / Reset terminal, followed by  
  102.     File / Save settings.  
  103.  
  104. Edit 
  105.   Bring in (Psion + B)
  106.     Brings onto the VT100 screen text which has previously been highlighted
  107.     in another application. For instance you could highlight the modem 
  108.     phone number in your database and then bring it into VT100 without
  109.     having to write it down in between.

  112. Screen  
  113.  
  114.   Pause screen (Psion + W)  
  115.     Stops the display of incoming data temporarily. If handshaking is being 
  116.     used on the serial link, then no data will be lost. An indicator on the 
  117.     status line shows that the screen is paused. Press a key to resume.  
  118.  
  119.   Clear screen (Psion + Y)  
  120.     Clears the screen and resets the cursor to the top left corner.  
  121.  
  122.   Reset terminal (Psion + T)  
  123.     Sets all the VT100 parameters back to the "factory default" settings.  
  124.     The serial port configuration is not affected.

  127. Transfer
  128.    
  129. All the transfer menu options are equivalent to those found in the
  130. Comms program and are repeated here for convenience.

  132.    Protocol (Psion + P)
  133.      Select the file transfer protocol to use
  134.      ASCII, XMODEM or YMODEM
  135.  
  136.    Transmit (Psion +T)
  137.      Send a file using the selected protocol
  138.  
  139.    Receive (Psion + R)
  140.      Receive a file using the selected protocol. Batch receive of
  141.      multiple files is possible using Ymodem.
  142.  
  143.    Capture (Psion + C)  
  144.     Starts logging of incoming data to a file chosen from the file selection 
  145.     dialogue. You can choose to overwrite the file, or append to the end of 
  146.     it. When logging is in progress, this option changes to "Capture off".  
  147.     Select "Capture off" to stop logging.  
  148.  
  149. VT100  
  150.   Emulation (Psion + E)  
  151.     This option allows you to set various VT100 emulation parameters:  
  152.     the first option listed is the default setting.  
  153.     Background   Normal / Reversed  
  154.       sets black on white or white on black display.  
  155.     Insert mode  Replace / Insert  
  156.       characters either overwrite or are inserted before existing ones.  
  157.     Autowrap     Off / On  
  158.       determines cursor action upon reaching the right-hand edge: by default, 
  159.       characters after the 80th on a line overwrite the 80th. Turn it on to  
  160.       get automatic wrap-around onto the next line.  
  161.     Incoming LF  <LF> / <LF><CR>  
  162.       determines action of incoming <LF> character - either cursor down, or 
  163.       cursor down and back to left-hand margin.

  165.   Cursor (Psion + D)      
  166.      Visible     Yes /No
  167.        hiding the cursor slightly increases display speed.  
  168.      
  169.      Flashing     Yes / No
  170.        A flashing cursor is normally easier to find
  171.  
  172.      Style        Block / Underline
  173.  
  174.      Auto-scroll  No / Yes
  175.        When set to Yes the window automatically moves around to make
  176.        the cursor appear on screen whenever it comes to rest. Has no 
  177.        effect when you are using the smallest available characters as 
  178.        the whole screen is visible anyway
  179.         
  180.      Origin mode  Absolute / Relative  
  181.       determines whether cursor positioning commands are interpreted as   
  182.       absolute screen co-ordinates or relative to the current cursor   
  183.       position. This is unlikely to need altering.   
  184.   
  185. Special  
  186.   Port (Psion + J)  
  187.     Sets the serial port options: baud rate, data bits, stop bits, parity,  
  188.     ignore parity.  
  189.     *Note on the demo version the baud rate is limited to 300 bps* 
  190.  
  191.   Handshakes (Psion + K)  
  192.     Sets the serial port handshakes: xon/xoff, rts/cts, dsr/dtr, dcd.  
  193.     You must use the handshaking convention used by the remote computer.
  194.  
  195.   Translates (Psion + F)  
  196.     Enter key    <CR> / <LF> / <CR><LF>  
  197.       determines which characters are transmitted when the Enter key is   
  198.       pressed.  
  199.     Delete key   <DEL> / <BS>   
  200.       determines which character is transmitted when the Delete key is   
  201.       pressed.  
  202.     Keypad Mode  Numeric / Application  
  203.       toggles the keypad (<diamond>+key) keys between their "numeric"   
  204.       values and their "application" key codes. An application will normally 
  205.       enable application mode automatically when it needs it. Note that   
  206.       PF1..PF10 (<diamond>+1..0) are not affected by the keypad mode.

  208.   About VT100 (Psion + A)  
  209.     Reminds you of our email address for support and the version number   
  210.     of your copy of VT100.

  212.   Exit (Psion + X)  
  213.     Leave VT100. Current settings will only be saved if you explicitly save 
  214.     them with File / Save settings.

  217. 5.  SUPPORT

  219. Commonest error messages
  220.  
  221. 1. Error opening serial port - File or Device in use
  222.  
  223. Solutions:
  224. a) Check that you have turned the remote link OFF
  225. b) Check that you are not using the serial link via the Comms application.
  226.    Return to the Comms application if installed and close it properly
  227.    using Psion + X.
  228.   
  229. 2. Garbled characters
  230.  
  231. Normally this means that the port settings of the series 3a do not agree 
  232. with the attatched computer or modem. Remember that this demo version of
  233. vt100 is limited to 300 Baud.
