Very simple idea really, I'm learning to speak Swedish at the moment and instead of writing my new words down in a notebook I started storing them on my Psion. The next obvious step was to write a program which would display a word or phrase in one language and wait for me to guess the meaning. I added to that the abilty to mark records, random record selection, search facilities and the normal Psion program options and Tester was born. I've made Tester a general program so you can use it to learn vocabulary, definitions, dates... whatever you want really!
2. INSTALLATION (for uninstalling see below)
1. Copy TESTER12.APP to the APP directory on any drive
2.Create a directory TST on any drive
3. (Optional) copy the SAMPLE.TST file to the TST directory
4. Install the program in the usual way by pressing Psion-I.
Note 1: Tester 1.2 will create a very small file in the OPD directory on your internal disk called HBPROG.INI this is used for registration.
Note 2: The Tester 1.2 files ARE flash-disk friendly so you can use them on a flash disk as you would with normal database files. The only exception to this is when you update the labels in the file. This will cause the entire database to be updated.
3. TUTORIAL
Wherever possible Tester 1.2 uses the standard Psion functionality so, for example, to create a new file press Psion-N. This will bring up a dialog box in which you can enter the lables you want displayed when running the program. In the sample file these are Swedish and English.
You can then insert entries by pressing Psion-I and search for entries by pressing Psion-F. Once you've entered a few records you can test yourself by pressing Psion-T. This will ask you which way round you wish the records to be presented. In the sample file this can be either Swedish to English or English to Swedish. It will also ask you about the order you want the records to be displayed, I normally pick random.
Marking Records
Each record can have a mark of between 1 and 3 to reflect how well you know it. When you enter a record it is given a value of 1. As you test youself on the records you can increase or decrease the value of the mark. It is then possible to just test youself on the records you don't know (i.e. those with a mark of 1) or to refresh you memory on the records you do know (or think you know!) with a mark value of 2 or 3.
Statistics
The Count function on the Special menu allows you to see how well you know your entries. This function displays the number of records in the database with each mark value. It also gives you an overall score and a score for your current session.
4. BUGS AND COMMENTS
I've tested Tester 1.2 extensively and have hopefully ironed out any bugs but if you do come across any please let me know. Also, if you have any comments or suggestions get in contact with me.
5. REGISTRATION
Tester 1.2 is shareware. The trial version of Tester 1.2 contains nearly all the functionality of the real program but limits you to 100 records. Registration costs just 10 UKP, $20 or 50 SEK and for this I will send you a code to allow you to bypass this limit. You can send your registration to the address below and for a quick response e-mail me as well. Every program on my Psion is fully registered and so should yours be!
6. UNINSTALLING
1. Remove Tester from your system screen by pressing Psion-/
2. Delete TESTER12.APP from your APP directory
3. Delete the directory \TST and all the files in it
4. Delete the file HBPROG.INI from your OPD directory
