  1. PilotMail MAPI BETA 3

  4. PilotMail is a MAPI mail client for US Robotics / Palm Computing 
  5. Pilot handheld computer. PilotMail is _not_ a PalmOS application, 
  6. but a Windows 95 application that downloads mail to the Pilot 
  7. memopad database. New mail will be available on the Pilot after 
  8. the next HotSync. Try it out and send your comments to

  11. PilotMail MAPI BETA is free, but the application will be shareware
  12. when released, with a $50 registration fee.

  14. All PilotMail BETAs will expire 1996-10-01.

  16. IMPORTANT: this is BETA software. Make a backup of your Memopad
  17. database file before using PilotMail. Use at your own risk!!!!!

  95. Known bugs and limitations (several, this is BETA software folks!):

  97. - Limited error handling. The memopad transactions are fairly well
  98.   protected and debugged, but to be on the safe side:

  100.   PLEASE BACKUP YOUR MEMOPAD DATABASE BEFORE USING THIS APPLICATION!!!

  102. Installation:
  103. =============
  104. 1: Download PilMailA.ZIP and unzip to a temporary directory
  105. 2: run setup.exe
  106. 3: run and configure PilotMail. This is very important, as you will 
  107.    not be able to download mail until all settings are correct.
  108.    Remember to click "Apply" after entering your settings
  109. 4: Click "Deliver" to start the mail retrieve/send
  110. 5: HotSync when finished
  111.  
  112. or, if using the minimum installation file (please note that you
  113. must have the VB 4.0 32-bit runtime files installed to us this):

  115. 1: Download PilMailB.ZIP and unzip to a temporary directory
  116. 2: run install.bat with the application install directory as
  117.    the only parameter, i.e. "install.bat C:\PilotMail". Create a
  118.    Start menu shortcut to PilMail.exe.

  121. Configuration:
  122. ==============

  124. User tab:
  125. ---------
  126. - Name: Pilot user name. The registered version will only work with
  127.   one Pilot user name. This will limit the use to one person, while 
  128.   allowing installation and use on several PCs.
  129. - Password: MAPI password
  130. - MAPI Profile: this is set to the default MAPI profile on first run,
  131.   but you can change it later to any profile. At the moment, PilotMail 
  132.   does not support multiple users and/or profiles,
  133. - Disable HotSync Manager on Deliver: if set, shuts down and restarts
  134.   HotSync Manager when delivering mail (please make sure that the
  135.   HotSync warning message is turned off).
  136. - Hide HotSync Manager: if "Disable HotSync Manager on Deliver" is set,
  137.   this options hides the HotSync Manager after restart.
  138. - Include read mail in download: if set, downloads all mail, read and
  139.   unread, since last download.
  140.  
  141. Memopad Tab:
  142. ------------
  143. - Filename: the filename of your memopad database, usually:
  144.   <Pilot Desktop installation path>\<Username>\memopad\memopad.dat
  145.   the [...] button lets you browse and select the file
  146. - Inbox: category for new messages
  147. - Outbox: category for outgoing messages
  148. - Sent mail: category to which Outbox contents is moved after sending
  149.   Inbox, Outbox, and Sent mail are configured via the "Categories"
  150.   button, which shows all categories in the current memopad file.
  151.   Please configure  "Filename" before clicking "Categories", the error
  152.   handling is limited...
  153. - Max msg size: Maximum size to download from messages. If you set this
  154.   option to 4 kB, all messages will be truncated to fit in one memo.
  155.   If you enter a larger number, messages larger than 4k will be divided 
  156.   into several memos, with the first line duplicated in every message part.
  157.   The maximum size to download is 400kB (100 memos, I number the memos 
  158.   [00] - [99]). 
  159. - Download [..] Private: sets Private flag on Inbox and Sent mail memos
  160.  
  161. Message Tab:
  162. -----------------
  163. This tab lets you configure which MAPI information that should be downloaded,
  164. and in what order. To specify the actual message text, you _must_ have
  165. the entry "[Message]" in the list. 
  166. - Up, Down: moves "Selected" headers up/down
  167. - Left, Right: moves headers between "Available" and "Selected" lists

  170. Command-line options:

  172. "-d" or "/d":    Start mail delivery on start-up
  173. "-q" or "/q/:    Quit when finished downloading mail
  174.  
  175. Outgoing messages format:
  176. =========================
  177. The format is very simple: Begin the memo with all the
  178. headers you want to include (i.e. "To", "Subject", etc).
  179. The message _must_ include a "To" header, "From" is 
  180. generated automatically by MAPI.
  181.  
  182. After the headers, leave a blank line, after which you
  183. write the actual message text.

  201. The message will be placed in the "sent mail" category
  202. after sending, complete with time sent and any error 
  203. messages.
  204.  
  205. The available headers that will be interpreted by PilotMail are:
  206.  
  207. - To, Cc, Bcc: adds the recipient(s) to the corresponding list
  208.   Addresses are separated by ";". The MAPI address format is
  209.   very flexible, and the addresses will be automatically resolved
  210.   at delivery. Some of the most common types are:
  211.   - Internet addresses: specify as normal (user@domain) or in MAPI
  212.     syntax "Joe Smith [SMTP: user@domain]" or "[SMTP: user@domain]" 
  213.   - Fax numbers: specify as "Joe Smith [FAX: (123)456-7890]" or
  214.     "[FAX: (123)456-7890]"
  215.   - Addresses in MAPI address book: specify name ("Joe Smith")
  216. - Subject
  217. - DeliveryReceipt, ReadReceipt, Signed, Encrypted: Yes/True,  
  218.   No/False accepted
  219. - ConversationTopic
  220. - ConversationIndex: PilotMail adds a new timestamp at the end of 
  221.   this string according to Exchange convention. I have not tested
  222.   this as I don't have access to a Exchange Server system.

  224. [Command] format:
  225. =================

  227. If you create a message in the Outbox category with [Command] as the
  228. first line, the message will be used by PilotMail to set different
  229. options in the application. The available options are:
  230. - InstallApp: installs a PalmOS application or database on the Pilot
  231.   Please note that it is not possible to select user at the moment,
  232.   the file will be installed to the current default user if there
  233.   are more than one user defined in Pilot Desktop.
  234. - Format: sets the download format. Use a string of "0" - "B" to 
  235.   specify the message format. Do not use any other characters in this
  236.   string, and no embedded spaces. The available headers are:
  237.   0 = "[Header]"
  238.   1 = "From"
  239.   2 = "To"
  240.   3 = "Cc"
  241.   4 = "Bcc"
  242.   5 = "TimeSent"
  243.   6 = "TimeReceived"
  244.   7 = "Subject"
  245.   8 = "[Message]"
  246.   9 = "[Attachments]"
  247.   A = "ConversationTopic"
  248.   B = "ConversationIndex"
  249. - TimeReceived: change the start date for download. PilotMail tracks the
  250.   date and time of last download. This command lets you download all mail 
  251.   from a given date.
  252. - DownloadReadMail: Sets the flag to download read mail or not.

  254. Example: to change the download format to Header, TimeSent, Subject, and 
  255. message text, and to download all mail received after September 1, 1996, 
  256. and to install Klondike 1.1 (unregistered version, support your local 
  257. shareware author and REGISTER your software!), create a memo in the 
  258. Outbox category with the following information:
