  6. continued use.  The author assumes no responsibility for damages caused by
  7. this program.   Make sure to back up (hotsync) your data before installing
  8. the program.

  11. This is the UNREGISTERED shareware version of Translate 1.11 for the Pilot.

  13. You are free to use this program for up to 30 days in order to
  14. evaluate it.  If you continue to use it beyond 30 days, you must

  21. TRANS.PRC    -  The Program that does the actual translating between languages.
  22. SPANISH.PDB  - The English to Spanish Database file.
  23. SPANISH2.PDB - A larger version of the English to Spanish Database file.
  24. README.TXT   - This file.
  25. ORDER.TXT    -  An order form to purchase other DDH Products.

  27. -------------------------- Installation ----------------------------------
  28.  
  29. First, make sure you have enought free space on your pilot.  To do so, run
  30. the Memory application on the pilot.  If you do not have at least 112K
  31. free you cannot install either database.  To install the large database and
  32. the translate application, you must have at least 204K free.  If you don't
  33. have enough for this, you will either have to choose to delete apps from the
  34. same Memory application, or choose to not install this program until you have
  35. that amount of free memory.
  36.  
  37. To install Translate onto your Pilot, run the INSTAPP.EXE program which resides
  38. in the same directory as the Pilot Desktop software.  This program will allow
  39. you to specify that a .PRC file should be downloaded to the Pilot during the
  40. next hotsync.  Choose to download both the TRANS.PRC and the SPANISH.PDB or
  41. SPANISH2.PDB to your pilot.  Please be aware that this PDB file is huge
  42. relative to many of the programs you may have installed and it therefore
  43. takes longer to install.  In addition, if the backup checkbox is set in the
  44. preferences portion of the Translate application, this PDB file will be
  45. backed up each time HotSync is run, and this too will take some time.  See
  46. later on in this file for more details on this setting.

  49. ----------------------- Instructions For Use ------------------------------
  50. --Selecting a Language
  51. If you have more than one language installed, then running the Translate
  52. application will bring up a language selection screen.  From here you can
  53. choose which language you would like to translate to/from.  To do this, touch
  54. the language in the list box that you would like to use, and press the OK
  55. button.  If there are no languages loaded into the pilot, you will not be
  56. able to get past this screen.

  58. --The Main Screen
  59. The screen contains two fields, the English Word and the Spanish Word.  There
  60. are also buttons: <<, <, To [Language], >, and >>, under the English word, and
  61. buttons: <<, <, To English, >, and >>, under the Spanish word.  In addition,
  62. there are Edit Entry and Add Entry buttons along the bottom of the screen,
  63. and New Word and New Phrase buttons along the top of the screen.

  65. --English To Spanish word
  66. To translate from English to the Spanish word, touch the English field
  67. with the stylus and then write your word in the graffiti area.  When you are
  68. finished writing the word to translate, press the 'To [Language]'
  69. button.  The result should show in the Spanish word's field below.

  71. --Spanish word To English
  72. To translate from a Spanish word to English, touch the Spanish word field
  73. with the stylus and then write your word in the graffiti area.  When you are
  74. finished writing the word to translate, press the 'To English' button.  The
  75. result should show in the English field above.

  77. The program will always attempt to find the exact word you entered.  If it
  78. finds the word you will see the word 'Found!' in the middle area of the
  79. screen.  If it cannot find the word you entered, it will search for the word
  80. as the start of another word.  If finds it this way the screen will show
  81. 'Found within word!', and the closest word in the language you enter will be
  82. shown over the field you entered text on.  If it still cannot find the word,
  83. it will search for the closest match of the word, and show 'Closest match!',
  84. and show the word's closest match and it's translation.

  86.     --Additional Buttons
  87.     The << and >> buttons will "rewind" and "fast forward" to the first or
  88.     last word in that list, respectively.  If you press << under the English
  89.     word you will get the first word in the English list, and it's equivalent
  90.     Spanish word also.  If you were to press >> under the Spanish word,
  91.     you would get the last Spanish word in the list, and it's associated
  92.     English word also.

  94.     The < and > buttons will go back or forward one entry in the list,
  95.     respectively.   If after translating a word, you were to press > under the
  96.     English word, you would get the next English word and it's equivalent
  97.     Spanish word.

  99.     --Edit Entry Button
  100.     This button brings up the edit screen which allows you to edit the current
  101.     entry.  There is also a choice to delete the current entry.  To edit the
  102.     entry, just change the fields you desire changed, and press the save button.
  103.     If you change your mind about editing the words, press the Cancel button, to
  104.     return to the main screen.

  106.     --Add Entry Button
  107.     This button brings up the Add Entry screen which allows you to add a new
  108.     entry.  To add an entry, just complete the fields you desire to add, and
  109.     press the save button.   If you change your mind about adding the words,
  110.     press the Cancel button, to return to the main screen.

  112.     --New Word Button
  113.     This button blanks out both fields to allow you to enter a new word to
  114.     translate.

  116.     --New Phrase Button
  117.     This button takes you to the phrase translation screen, where you can
  118.     write sentences and have them translated for you.

  121. --The Translate Phrase Screen
  122. The screen contains two multi-line fields, the English Phrase and the
  123. Spanish Phrase.  There are also buttons: To [Language], and To English.
  124. In addition, there are New Word and New Phrase buttons along the top of the
  125. screen.

  128. --English Phrase To Spanish phrase
  129. To translate from English to the Spanish language, touch the English field
  130. with the stylus and then write your sentence in the graffiti area.  When
  131. you are finished writing the sentence to translate, press the 'To
  132. [Language]' button.  The result should show in the Spanish phrase's field
  133. below.

  135. --Spanish word To English
  136. To translate a Spanish phrase to English, touch the Spanish phrase field
  137. with the stylus and then write your sentence in the graffiti area.  When
  138. you are finished writing the sentence to translate, press the 'To
  139. English' button.  The result should show in the English field above.

  141. NOTE: The Phrase translation used in the program does not make any attempts
  142. at being grammatically correct.  Rather, it works by searching for an exact
  143. match for each word.  If it does not find an exact match, it leaves the word
  144. in the original language and puts square-brackets [] around the word.  While
  145. very few sentences will yield a perfect translation, this feature can still
  146. be quite useful for getting the 'jist' of a sentence quickly.

  148.      --New Word Button
  149.        This button brings you back to the word translation screen where you
  150.        can enter a new word to translate, or add and edit entries.
  151.  
  152.      --New Phrase Button
  153.        This button blanks out both fields for you to start writing a new
  154.        phrase to translate.

  157. --Choose Language
  158. From the File pull down menu, you can bring up the Choose Language choice,
  159. which will allow you to switch to a different language, as well as delete an
  160. individual language database. This screen contains a list of languages
  161. available and OK button.  To switch languages, touch the language of your
  162. choice with the stylus and press the OK button.  To delete a language, touch
  163. the language of your choice with the stylus, and press the Menu silkscreen
  164. button to bring down the menu.  Select Delete Language from the File
  165. drop-down menu and answer yes to the confirmation screen.  The language will
  166. be deleted from the list.

  168. NOTE: The shareware demo version only functions with the 2 Spanish databases
  169. distributed with it.

  171. --Preferences
  172. From the File pull down menu, you can bring up the Preferences choice,
  173. which will allow you to toggle the HotSync backup setting for whichever
  174. language database is currently in use. When The Backup Database checkbox is
  175. checked, the entire database is backed up on the next HotSync.  If the
  176. checkbox is not checked, the database will not be backed up.  Since the
  177. databases are rather large, the HotSync can take a long time if it has to
  178. back up these languages every time.  So until a conduit is written, this
  179. measure serves to allow the user to select when the databases will be backed
  180. up.  You should only set this checkbox after making serious changes to the
  181. database.   After selecting your choice, press the OK button at the bottom of
  182. the screen.

  185. --Cut, Copy, and Paste
  186. From the pull down menus, you can cut, copy, or paste to and from either word
  187. on the screen, and bring/take either word into/from another application (such
  188. as the memopad application).

  260. 7/22/97 - V1.11 - Bug Fixes:  Fixed an occasional problem with adding and
  261. editing entries corrupting the indexing.  Also fixed it so that switching
  262. back and forth between Translate and other applications would remember what
  263. word was currently on-screen.  Minor Revision.

  265. 7/04/97 - V1.10 - New Features: Compression, Phrase translation, New Word and
  266. new phrase.  Fixes 1.0 and Mac problems.  Major revision.

  268. 5/20/97 - V1.00 - Created release for the Pilot Plus Pack.  Not released to

  279. 4/04/97 - V0.96 - Fixed problem with HotSync version 1.1 and 1.0 not
  280. recognizing SPANISH.PDB file.  HotSync 1.1 now works fine, and V 1.0 loads
  281. but then crashes due to a problem with > 32K sizes in Hotsync 1.0.  Also
  282. fixed problem of program going into endless loop if there is no database
  283. loaded.
