  28. -------------------------- Installation ----------------------------------

  30. First, make sure you have the appropriate space available on your pilot.
  31. The space required for the program itself is ~22K.  The thesaurus data takes
  32. up 281K.  You will need somewhere greater than 310K free to be able to
  33. install and run the Thesaurus program.
  34.  
  35.  To see if you have enough memory, run the Memory application on the
  36. pilot.  If you do not have at least the appropriate amount free, you will
  37. either have to choose to delete apps from the same Memory application, or
  38. choose to not install this program until you have that amount of free memory.
  39.  
  40. To install Thesaurus onto your Pilot, run the INSTAPP.EXE program which
  41. resides in the same directory as the Pilot Desktop software.  This program
  42. will allow you to specify that a .PRC file should be downloaded to the Pilot
  43. during the next hotsync.  Choose to download both the THES.PRC and the
  44. THESDATA.PDB to your pilot.  Please be aware that this PDB file is huge
  45. relative to many of the programs you may have installed and it therefore may
  46. take several minutes to install.  This data file will not be backed up, so
  47. it won't slow your hotsyncs down after installing.

  50. ----------------------- Instructions For Use ------------------------------
  51. --Selecting a Mode
  52. There are two main modes to the Thesaurus program- Thesaurus mode and
  53. SpellCheck mode.  In Thesaurus mode, any search will yield a list of
  54. synonyms, whereas in SpellCheck mode, a search may yield nothing - if it is
  55. spelled correctly, or a list of possible correct spellings.

  58. --The Main Screen
  59. The screen contains one field, the Enter Word.  There are also buttons:
  60. <<, <, Look Up, >, and >>, under the Enter Word field.  In addition there are
  61. word form buttons running up the side of the list box, and Thesaurus and
  62. SpellCheck mode buttons running along the bottom of the screen.   While the
  63. program is searching a small clock will show in the bottom left corner, to
  64. let you know that it is still in search mode.  To the right of the dotted
  65. line along the top, there is a small arrow indicator.  Touching this
  66. indicator, will bring up a list of the last 15 words previously looked up.

  68. --Thesaurus Mode
  69. To put the program into Thesaurus mode, press the button at the bottom
  70. labeled 'Thesaurus'.  To look up a word, touch the field line near the top
  71. of the screen and then write in a word.  Press the 'Find Word' button
  72. to see the synonyms for the word.  The synonyms should appear in the Box
  73. below.  You can limit the search results by pressing the word form buttons
  74. running along the side of the box.  By pressing 'Noun', for example, you will
  75. see only nouns that match the above word.  By pressing 'All' you will return
  76. to showing all word types.  When in this mode, you will see an abbreviation
  77. in []'s showing what type of word each match is.  When running a search, the
  78. 'Find Word' button will change into a 'Cancel' button.  Pressing it will stop
  79. the search.

  81. If there are multiple definitions for a word, you will see the definitions
  82. past the first meaning, numbered from 2 on.  There is enough space allocated
  83. to show a total of 80 words including the word at the top.  An arrow will
  84. appear in the list box if more words can be viewed by scrolling.

  86. Depending on the 'List Box Options' Preference (see below), you may be able
  87. to touch a word in the list box and have it look up the word you touch,
  88. and/or copy this word to the clipboard for pasting in another application.
  89.  
  90. The program will always attempt to find the exact word you entered.  If it
  91. finds the word you will see the word 'Found!' in the middle area of the
  92. screen as it looks for the synonyms.  If it cannot find the word you entered,
  93. it will search for the word as the start of another word.  If finds it this
  94. way the screen will show 'Found within word!', and the closest word will be
  95. shown over the field you entered text on, along with it's synonyms below.  If
  96. it still cannot find the word, it will search for the closest match of the
  97. word, and show 'Closest match!', and show the word's closest match and it's
  98. synonyms.

  100. --Additional Buttons
  101. The << and >> buttons will "rewind" and "fast forward" to the first or
  102. last word in the list, respectively.

  104. The < and > buttons will go back or forward one entry in the list,
  105. respectively.

  107. --SpellCheck Mode
  108. To put the program into SpellCheck mode, press the button at the bottom
  109. labeled 'SpellCheck'.  To look up a word, touch the field line near
  110. the top of the screen and then write in a word.  Press the 'Find Word'
  111. button to see if the word is spelled correctly.  If the word is in the
  112. database, you will see 'Word Spelled Correctly", below the Look Up button.
  113. If it is not found, suggestions for possible corrections are shown in the box
  114. below.  You can limit the search results by pressing the word form buttons
  115. running along the side of the box.  By pressing 'Noun', for example, you will
  116. see only nouns that could possibly relate to the above word.  By pressing
  117. 'All' you will return to showing all word types.  When in this mode, you will
  118. see an abbreviation in []'s showing what type of word each suggestion is.

  134. --Preferences
  135. From the File pull down menu, you can bring up the Preferences choice,
  136. which will allow you to set various preferences for the program's behavior.

  138.   --Startup Mode
  139.   This option allows you to choose the mode that the program will run in upon
  140.   startup.  You can choose to have it always come up in Thesaurus mode, or
  141.   SpellCheck mode, or you can have it remember the mode it was last in, the
  142.   previous time you ran it.

  144.   --Startup Lookup Options
  145.   This option allows you to choose whether the program will look up any word
  146.   in the current clipboard's memory upon startup.  You can also choose to
  147.   have it remember the last word looked up, on the previous time running.
  148.   And if you prefer, you can start with a blank slate each time, by choosing
  149.   'Do Nothing'.

  151.   --List Box Options
  152.   This option chooses what the program will do when you touch an item in the
  153.   list box with the stylus.  If the choice is 'Lookup word selected', the
  154.   program will run a search on the word you selected.  By choosing, 'Copy
  155.   selected word to clipboard', you can have the program place that word
  156.   in the clipboard for later pasting into another application (such as
  157.   Memopad).  Selecting, 'Copy and lookup selected word' will do both of the
  158.   above actions.

  160.   By manipulating the above options, you should be able to set the program up
  161.   to behave the way you'd like it, by default.  For example, if you were
  162.   wanting to use the program as a Thesaurus, you could set the Startup mode
  163.   to Thesaurus, the 'Startup Lookup Options' to 'Lookup word from clipboard',
  164.   and the 'List Box Options' to 'Copy and Lookup Selected word'.  Now, when
  165.   you are reading a memopad entry, you could highlight a word with the
  166.   stylus, select cut from the pull down menu, and run the Thesaurus
  167.   application.  It will automatically look up the word in the clipboard and
  168.   present you with a list of synonyms.  If you wish to replace the word,
  169.   touch the word you would like and then switch back to memo pad. If not,
  170.   just switch back without touching the list box. Now paste the entry back in
  171.   and you have just replaced the word!

  173.   -- Maximum Matches
  174.   Here you set the maximum number of synonyms (for Thesaurus mode) or
  175.   suggestions (for SpellCheck mode).  You can choose betwee 5 and 80 matches,
  176.   in increments of 5.  To optimize the program for speed, go with a lower
  177.   setting.  To maximize your search breadth, go with a higher setting.

  179. --Cut, Copy, and Paste
  180. From the pull down menus, you can cut, copy, or paste to and from the word
  181. on the screen, and bring/take the word into/from another application (such
  182. as the memopad application).

  224.           Bug fix!
  225.              - Fixed problem with Cancel button occasionally causing what
  226.                appeared to be a lock-up when using the SpellCheck mode.

  229.           New Features in response to suggestions!
  230.              - Popup history list trigger -appears to the right of the word
  231.                you are looking up.  Press it, and see the last 15 lookups.
  232.                Touch any lookup to go right to that entry!
  233.              - The hardware up and down buttons now scroll the matches list
  234.                up and down, respectively.
  235.              - A Cancel button!! - The 'Find Word' button toggles to a
  236.                Cancel button during searches.  No longer is it necessary
  237.                to wait around when you already see the word you were looking

  239.              - The maximum number of finds is now 80 instead of the previous
  240.                40.  This can be adjusted between 5 and 80 matches in the
  241.                Preferences screen.

  243.               - The current entry is redrawn when you go into the about and

  245.               - Fixed bug where < button would sometimes not get all entries

  247. 9/04/97 - V1.01 - Fixed a bug that caused a looong "pause" when searching for
  248.                   entries that started with the letter 'z'.

  250.                     - Adjustable Setting for maximum number of matches for
  251.                       synonyms and spelling suggestions.  Ranges from 5-40.
  252.                     - Added stopwatch icon to lower left portion of screen to
