- 1. What is the use of this program?
- If you want to enjoy a relaxing moment, needs rest from hard work, or
- want to enjoy easy drawing with a few pressing of keys, then this
- program is for you. Have a good time!
-
-
-
- 2. It's so easy.
- If you do not feel like reading this document, just register this program
- in the system manager and run it. It looks and works just like built-in
- PIMs, so you should have no problem. Come back to this document when you
- want to know more about it. But any user must read and follow "Section 5:
- Copyright & Agreement".
-
-
-
- 3. How to use
- 3.1 Installing
- Put TREE.EXM and TREE.ICN in the same directory. Register TREE.EXM
- in the system manager. (Please read the manual of HP100/200LX
- if you do not know how.)
-
- 3.2 Notice to Users of Former Versions
- When you first run this program, you will see the message that TREE.ENV
- is illegal. Please ignore this error and press ENTER. You will not see
- the message again.
-
- 3.3 Operation
- The program has a menu system that is very similar to built-in PIMs
- except a few minor differences.
-
- Function keys:
- [Parameters] Sets parameters.
- [Draw] Draws trees without erasing.
- [Draw New] Erases the screen and draws new trees.
- [Erase] Erases the screen.
- [Open] Reads a file.
- [Save] Saves the current image in a file.
-
- By choosing [Menu][Help][Japanese Help] you can see a Japanese help
- if your HP100/200LX supports Japanese.
- If it doesn't, all you see is meaningless characters.
-
- 3.4 Setting Parameters (Values inside < > are defaults.)
- [Variety] < OFF >
- Branches usually spread within a fixed angle that is the same for
- all the trees. If this option is on, the angle is determined
- randomly for each tree and the setting for [Branches] is ignored.
-
- [Gradation] < ON >
- Uses gray scale.
-
- [Boulevard] < OFF >
- Draws a boulevard. The larger value of [Height] is ignored.
-
- [Number=32] < ON >
- The number of trees are forced to 32, when [Boulevard] is on.
-
- [Light] < 4 >
- Brightness of trees. The larger the value, the darker the trees.
-
- [Number] < 7 >
- Number of trees. No trees are drawn when this is set to 0.
-
- [Trunks] < 6 >
- Specifies the biggness of trunks. The larger value means thinner trees.
- Numbers from 1 to 999 are accepted, but there is no sense in
- specifing a vaue greater than about 70, at which point, no trees are drawn.
-
- [Branches] < 1 - 45 >
- Controls how wide branches spread. The larger the value, the wider
- the branches spread. Specify both the minimum and the maximum values.
- The width is determined randomly for each tree within this range.
- The values should be from 1 to 70.
-
- [Height] < 1 - 35 >
- Specify the minimum and the maximum heights of the trees. The height of
- each tree varies randomly within this range. The values from 1 to 40
- are allowed. The larger the value, the higher the trees.
-
- [Area] < 0 - 639 >
- Specify the left and right ends of the area that you want to use.
- The left end of the screen is 0. The right end is 639.
-
- 3.5 Setting Advanced Parameters(The values in < > are defaults.)
- [Auto Open] <OFF>
- Automatically reads the file that was last saved or read when this progem
- is invoked.
-
- [Auto Start] <OFF>
- Automatically starts drawing when this program is run.
-
- [Auto Repeat] <OFF>
- Automatically redraws the trees at an interval specified in [Interval].
-
- [Drawing/Task Switch] <Medium/Medium>
- As you draw trees faster, the response to 'alarms' and 'Stopwatch'
- becomes slower. Choose a balance. Note that the reponse to
- blue keys is the same for all the choices.
- Quick/Slow:
- Drawing is the fastest. Alarms do not go off until all the trees
- are drawn.
- Medium/Medium:
- Drawing speed of each tree is the same as Quck/Slow, but the program
- waits a little longer before each tree is drawn.
- Alarms go off after a tree is drawn.
- Slow/Quick:
- The drawing speed is the slowest. Alarms go off even when a tree is
- being drawn.
-
- [Interval] < 10 >
- Specifies the interval for [Auto Redraw]. The unit is in seconds.
- New trees are automatically drawn at this interval.
-
- [Delay] < 0 - 0 >
- Specifies how fast(or how slow) trees are drawn. The number 0 means
- the fastest drawing. The larger value means slower drawing.
- Specify the minimum and maximum speeds. The speed fluctuates within
- this range. If you do not like the fluctuation, use the same number
- for the two values.
- The values are only estimates. The speed for 10, for example, is NOT
- twice as fast as that for 20.
-
- 3.6 Full Screen Mode
- [Full Screen]
- Usually trees are not drawn at the top and the buttom parts of the screen,
- where the program title, date and time, and the function key labels are
- displayed. When this option is on, trees are drawn on the whole screen.
-
- [Hide Frame]
- When this option is on, the title bar at the top of the screen and the
- function key labels are not displayed. Use this option to see the whole
- screen. Valid only when [Full Screen] is on.
-
- 3.7 Reading and Writing a File
- The top card(business card) of HP100/200LX uses a format called PCX.
- This program can read and write files of this format. When a file is
- read or written, the name of the file is remembered. When you use
- the [Save] command, this name is used to save the image. If you want to
- cancel this name, select [New]. This will erase the name and the screen.
- [Open] Reads a PCX file.
- [Save] Saves the current image as a PCX file. The current image is
- saved with the same name as the last file you read or wrote.
- If no file has been read or written, this command works
- in the same way as [Save As].
- [Save As] Saves the current image as a PCX file with a new name.
- [New] Erases the current image. The file name is also erased
- and you have to input a file name again, to save the image.
-
- 3.8 Two Ways to Erase the Screen
- There are two different ways to erase the screen, selecting [New] and
- selecting [Erase]. When a file is read or written, the name is
- remembered and used when [Save] is selected. If you select [New] to
- erase the screen, this name is also erased. If you use [Erase], this
- name is not erased.
-
- 3.9 Notice
- When you leave the program, a file TREE.ENV is created in C:\_DAT\.
- This file records the parameters and these are retrieved next time
- you run this program. You may delete this file, but the parameters are
- reset to default values.
-
-
-
- 4. Use of Source Files
- Source files are included in this package. To make the executable file,
- however, you need E2M.EXE, INClude and OBJect files for EXM programs,
- as well as the menu and dialogue library for HP100LX written by the author.
- The source files for this library are not included in this package.
-
-
-

- 6. Acknowledgement
- My sincerest thanks goes to Rey, who wrote the original TREE
- and kindly permitted the porting to HP100/200LX. If this program makes
- people happy, that is largely because of his effort.
- I am also obliged to Padorappa, who added to the attractiveness of this
- program by making a beautiful icon.
