- type each phrase, separated by "||".
-
- F8, F8 INSERT Inserts a new label
- in the file (when you are not in text
- view, use Shft-F8 to override the
- default placement of the new label at
- the end of the file and instead place
- it at the current cursor location)
-
- qThere are 5 types of todos and
- appointments:
-
- Daily - one date only
- Every Day - all or selected days of
- the week
- Interval - every X days or weeks
- beginning on a specified day
- To set a multiple day
- appointment, set the
- interval to 1 day & specify
- the start & end dates
- Monthly by day - 2nd, 14th, etc. day
- of one or more months
- Monthly by position - 1st Wed, 3rd
- Fri, etc. of one or more months
-
- (Yearly entries are created by
- deselecting all but one month in
- the monthly entries)
-
- Other labels:
-
- Todo - a shortcut way of creating a
- single date todo. A todo can
- also be created from any of
- the appointment types by
- pressing F3 while editing
- Category - apply customizable labels
- (99 allowed) to a
- paragraph
- Bookmark - mark positions for
- navigation using the
- Bookmark view
- Section - mark the start of a new
- topic or subject (this
- label is always shown as
- the beginning of a line)
-
- Once you select the type, the
- label editor opens to allow you to
- change the label's settings (Bookmark
- and Section labels have no settings to
- change and the editor does not open
- when you create them). Press ESC and
- answer "Y" at the "Lose changes[Y/N]"
- prompt if you wish to cancel the
- insertion, otherwise press F10 to save
- the new label when you are done.
-
- =F9 MARK turns text marking on. To

- again to mark the current word, then
- the current sentence and then the
- current paragraph.

- to the file FLEXPAD.CLP, FLEXPAD's
- clipboard.
-
- To add the marked area to the existing
- contents of the Clipboard, press
- Ctrl-X (CUT) or Ctrl-C (COPY).
-
- To MOVE marked text, move the cursor
- to the new position and press Enter
-
- F9 (Shift-F9) Marks the current
- paragraph in text view. If text was
- already marked, the begin and end
- points are relocated to those for the
- current paragraph. This is the
- equivalent of pressing F9 four times
-
- F10 SAVE Saves the data file to the
- disk. You can specify whether the
- file is written only when there is
- unsaved data or always {Settings|File|
- Savekey}. Shift-F10 saves data in the
- same manner but skips updating the
- alarm file used to set alarms on the
- HP Palmtops.
-
- Alt-Q exits FLEXPAD after allowing
- you to save any unsaved changes you've
- made. In TSR mode quit returns you to
- to the underlying application but
- FLEXPAD remains in memory, ready to
- resume work. If you've set FLEXPAD to
- automatically save data on exit
- {Settings|File|Quitsave}, it will save
- the data without asking you for
- confirmation. A "No" setting,
- recognized only when in TSR mode, will
- skip saving data to allow quicker
- jumps to other applications (you can
- save the data when you return to
- FLEXPAD).
-
- ────────────────────────────────────
- Menus
-
- On all PC's, pressing / or ESC
- activates the menus, which are
- displayed on the top line(s) of the
- screen. On the HP palmtops, the Menu
- key also has this effect. To insert
- a slash {/} in the text, press Menu or
- / twice. In the notes below, function
- key equivalents for menu choices are
- listed in []'s.
-
- dMenu choices:
-
- h File|Open open another file. If
- unsaved changes to the current file
- exist, you are given a chance to save
- them.
-
- File|Save [F10] saves data to disk.
- The menu version always saves, even if
- no changes were made to the file. F10
- can be set to save only when unsaved
- changes exist {Settings|File|Savekey}.
-
- File|saveAs saves data to a disk
- file after giving you an opportunity
- to specify a new file name. If the
- file already exists, you will be asked
- to confirm overwriting.
-
- File|New create a new file. If
- unsaved changes to the current file
- exist, you are given a chance to save
- them.
-
- File|Previous allows you to pick a
- file to load from a list of the last
- 5 files you've loaded. You can delete
- a file from the list (but not from the
- disk) by moving the cursor to its name
- and pressing DEL.
-
- File|Import inerts the contents of
- the file you specify into the current
- file at the cursor position. If the
- import file was created by Flexpad,
- its configuration information is
- ignored
-
- U File|Export writes all or part of
- the current file to a file whoose name
- you specify with various options:
-
- First you give the destination file
- name. If it already exists you choose
- whether to replace it or append to the
- end of it. Then a menu for selecting
- among the available options appears.
- Select Startexport once you have
- finished selecting your options or
- press ESC to cancel the export.
-
- The export option settings are shown
- on your display. The settings are not
- saved between Flexpad sessions and
- will revert to their default states.
-
- If you are in text view when you begin
- the export, Flexpad will write the
- portion of the file that is marked, or
- the whole file if none is marked. If
- in a view, the portions of the text
- corresponding to the view matches are
- exported.
-
- zThe export options interact and some
- will have no effect in some
- combinations. This is indicated by an
- "*" to the left of the option
-
- File|Export|Startexport Begins the
- export using the settings you've
- selected
-
- File|Export|Type Flexpad binary
- writes the data with Flexpad labels
- kept in the binary format that Flexpad
- understands. Text writes the data as
- ASCII text, converting labels to text
-
- File|Export|Addblank Operative in
- views only, adds a blank line between
- each matching entry exported from the
- view
-
- File|Export|From Operative in views
- and then only when Labels is not set
- to "Time/Pty"--Label begins the
- export at the label location, possibly
- in the middle of the paragraph;
- Paragraph start begins at the start
- of the paragraph containing the label
-
- File|Export|End Operative in views
- only, New paragraph ends a match's
- export at the end of the paragraph
- containing the matching label. Blank
- line ends it when a blank line is
- found. Outline level ends it when a
- paragraph with the same or lessor
- degree of indentation is found.
-
- File|Export|Delete Whether to delete
- the data that was exported from the
- current file after the export is
- completed
-
- File|Export|Labels Inoperative when
- Type = "Flexpad binary," Include
- includes labels in the export, Exclude
- excludes them. Time/Pty has the same
- effect as Include for non-calendar
- views; in calendar views, it shows
- only the times or priority of the
- matching label, excluding all
- following labels for the matching
- entry. Time/Pty is best used to
- export calendar listings for external
- printing or reference
-
- Because of the interaction of the
- export options, experimentation is
- necessary to obtain the results you
- desire.
-
- f Edit|Label [F2] brings up the edit
- box for the label under the cursor; if
- the cursor is not on a label, nothing
- happens
-
- Edit|Find [F7] prompts for a search
- phrase and then searches the text for
- the phrase. You specify whether the
- search is in a forward or backward
- direction or begins at the begining of
- the file
-
- Edit|Mark [F9] activate highlight to
- mark text to be copied, cut or deleted
- from the file. Selecting this multiple
- times will select the word, sentence &
- paragraph at the cursor position.
-
- Edit|Del [DEL] remove marked text
- (or the character at the cursor) from
- the file
-
- Edit|cuT [Alt-X] copy marked text
- to the clipboard file (FLEXPAD.CLP)
- and remove it from the file
-
- Edit|Copy [Alt-C] copy marked text
- to the clipboard file (FLEXPAD.CLP)
-
- Edit|Paste [Alt-V] copy text from the
- clipboard file (FLEXPAD.CLP) into the
- file
-
- g Edit|clpAppend|cuT [Ctrl-X]
- removes marked text from the file and
- adds it to the end of the clipboard
- (regular cuT replaces the previous
- contents of the clipboard)
-
- Edit|clpAppend|Copy [Ctrl-C] adds
- marked text to the end of the
- clipboard (regular Copy replaces the
- previous contents of the clipboard)
-
- Edit|moVe if text is marked, marking
- is frozen so that you can move the
- cursor to a new location in the file.
- Press Enter to move the marked text to
- that location or ESC to cancel
-
- Edit|cloNe if the cursor is on a
- label or text is marked in text view,
- Flexpad inserts a copy of the label or
- text following it
-
- Edit|textSort [F3] toggles sorting
- (by the first non space character
- after the label) of entries in a view
- on and off. Sorting only applies to
- the Sections, Bookmark and single
- Category views. If sorting is active,
- an "S" is displayed on the 2nd line of
- the display under the current time
-
- e Insert|Label [F8] Insert a label at
- the cursor position. For a list of
- the different label types, see the
- F8 key description, above, or select

- from which you can pick a date to
- insert in the text at the cursor.
- Alt-D is the shortcut key for this
- function
-
- Insert|Time [T] Inserts the current
- time in the text. Alt-T is the
- shortcut key for this function
-
- Insert|Character [I] Allows you to
- insert a character by typing its ASCII
- value. This is useful for inserting
- characters that correspond to function
- keys (i.e., ASCII 20 = = Ctrl-T)
- that Flexpad would interpret as a
- command if you entered it the normal
- way. Alt-I is the shortcut key for
- this function. Note: type in the
- ASCII value as a number (1-255); you
- cannot use the Alt-keypad method.
-
- p View|Text Shows the full text of
- the file. This is where text is
- added, rearranged or deleted
-
- View|Day Shows all appointments for
- and todos which are due on or before

- format
-
- View|Month Shows all appointments

- first column may be set to Sunday or
- Monday {Settings|Screen|Monthstart}
-
- View|monthGraph Shows all the
- appointments for the month in a graph
- format. Todos are excluded. As you
- move the cursor over an occupied time
- period, up to three of the matching
- appointments for that time are shown
- on the bottom of the display. Weeks,
- which begin on the day of the week
- set via Settings|Screen|weekStart,
- are separated by one or more empty
- columns.
-
- L View|Only Shows all paragraphs
- which contain a specified phrase.
- Type in a phrase or press F6 to pick
- from a list of previous searches. To
- search for up to 5 different phrases,
- type the phrases, separated by "||".
- If you blank the search phrase (press
- Backspace), all paragraphs in the
- file will be shown
-
- View|Sections Shows all section
- labels in the file. Sections are a
- good tool to group a file's contents
- by subject
-
- View|pReview Shows all appointments
- for 7 days beginning with the view
- date and todos which first become due
- during that period. A good way of
- looking at things that are coming up.
-
- View|oVerdue Shows those todos
- which are marked as Deadline (not
- target) todos and are due on or before
- the view date. Useful for finding
- todos that really have to be done now.

-
- r View|otHer|Archivable Shows all
- labels which are appointments which
- will not appear again on or after the
- view date and done todos. CAUTION:
- take care in exporting from an archive
- file as there may be other labels in
- the matching paragraphs which are not
- "expired;" exporting and deleting a
- single paragraph containing an expired
- label may destroy the context for the
- exported paragraph and those that
- remain in the file after exportation.
-
- View|otHer|Donetodos shows all
- checked off todos, sorted by checkoff
- date. This can provide an overview
- of the work you've recently completed
-
- View|otHer|allLabels Shows all

- l Settings|Colors Select one of the
- screen elements and use the cursor
- (arrow) keys to change its color to
- one you prefer
-
- n Settings|File|File Specify the
- drive and/or subdirectory where you
- want FLEXPAD to look for files when
- you do not specify a full path and
- the [optional] file specification.
- Example: c:\flpdata\*.flp
-
- Settings|File|Help Specify the
- full path and name of the FLEXPAD help
- file (i.e., c:\flexpad.hlp)
-
- Settings|File|Autosave 3 choices:
- Yes--always saves when you quit
- Ask--always asks you if you want
- to save unsaved data.
- No--this only works when FLEXPAD
- is loaded as a TSR (popup). It does
- not save on quitting (which is OK
- because your data is still in
- memory). It behaves like Ask when
- not loaded as a TSR.
-
- Settings|File|Tbackup When a data
- file is saved it is safer to keep the
- old copy on the disk until the save is
- completed. This temporarily requires
- twice as much disk space, however.
- Those with nearly full disks can turn
- this off but at some risk of data loss
- should the disk become too full, etc.
-
- Settings|File|Savekey Whether F10
- saves data only when its "Unsaved" or
- "Always". This was added for users
- who were concerned about unnecessary
- battery drain or disk wear from saving
- unchanged data.
-
- Settings|File|aLarm Whether to save
- alarm information to a file
- (ALARMS.ABK) for use by the HP
- Palmtops' alarm function. For more
- information, see the discussion of
- alarms, below.
-
- m Settings|Defaults|Date Choose from
- MM/DD/YY, M/D/YY, D.N.YY or DD.MM.YY
- formats for display and entry of dates
-
- Settings|Defaults|Time Choose from
- 12 hour (5:00p) or 24 hour (17:00)
- time display formats
-
- Settings|Defaults|duRation If not
- zero, whenever you edit a start time,
- the end time is checked and, if it's
- before the start time, it's set to the
- start time plus the duration (in 5
- minute increments). A duration of 0

- Alarms
-
- If you are not using FLEXPAD with an
- HP palmtop you may want to disable
- FLEXPAD's support for the alarm
- settings on calendar entries. To do
- this, simply select {Settings|Screen|
- Ignore}. You will no longer see the
- alarm on/off or leadtimes on the label
- edit screen and the alarm flag ()
- won't be displayed on the view
- screens. Default alarm settings will
- still be added to the entries as they
- are created and you can switch back to
- editing them at any time.
-
- If you want FLEXPAD to create a file
- that can be read by the HP Palmtops to
- set their alarm files, set {Settings|
- File|aLarm} to Yes.
-
- FLEXPAD doesn't set the built in alarm
- on the HP palmtops; if you change or
- set alarms on any entries, you must
- cause the built in appointment program
- to read the file and reset its alarms
- by one of the following methods. In
- each case you must first save the file
- using one of FLEXPAD's save commands
- (but not Shift-F10, which skips alarm
- updating).
-
- 1. Reboot your computer. Provided
- that the alarms.abk file containing
- your alarm entries was the last file
- read by the Palmtop's APPT program,
- the Palmtop's SYSMGR will read the
- file as a part of its initialization
- routine. This is true on the 95LX; on
- the 100/200LX, you must manually
- reload the .ABK file into APPT.
-
- 2. Load the file into APPT and then
- immediately exit APPT. APPT will
- reset the system alarms when it reads
- the file. On the HP 100/200LX, you
- must manually load the .abk file or
- use a macro. See the TOUR.FLP file
- for a sample macro for this purpose.

- the field blank by backspacing out
- the existing number.
-
- ────────────────────────────────────
- ITime entry
-
- Enter the time without punctuation.
- Add "P" to indicate PM times ("12" is
- treated as 1200p-Noon unless "a" is
- added for midnight at the beginning of
- the day or "m" is added to indicate
- midnight at the end of the day). The
- ending time you specify will be set to
- the corresponding time which is after
- the start time unless you override it
- with an "a" (auto am/pm function).
- When the Duration of appts {Settings|
- Defaults|duRation} is nonzero, the
- ending time, if less than the
- beginning time, will be set to the
- beginning time plus the duration.
- Note: if Auto PM is set {Settings|
- Defaults|Autopm}, any time you enter
- which is less than the AutoPM setting
- will be converted to a "PM" time
- unless you override it by specifying
- "a" with the time number. (AutoPM is
- disabled while the 24 hour display
- format is active.)
-
- Blanking the start time will cause
- the label to appear without a specific
- time and disable alarms for the label.
-
- Examples:
- AutoPM = 0
- Entry 12 hr fmt 24 hr fmt
- 1 = 100a 0100
- 10 = 1000a 1000
- 101 = 101a 0101

- on the picklist and press enter to
- select it and and save the label. To
- modify the text for a category level,
- place the cursor on it, press F2, type
- the new text and press Enter or F10 to
- store the change.
-
- ────────────────────────────────────
- yCheckoff repeating todo:
-
- You can quickly checkoff a todo while
- editing it by pressing F4. If you're
- editing a repeating todo, you're
- given the following choices:
-
- settoNextrepeat - this sets the
- Next date to the first date that is
- greater than the current system, Next
- and Start dates and matches the
- repeating specification (3rd Wed, 25th
- of the month, etc.)
-
- Final - this permantly checks off
- the todo; it will not show up in any
- view as an active todo. You are asked
- for the date of completion, which is
- entered into the End date field. The
- Next field is set to the following day
-
- ────────────────────────────────────
- Command line switches/parameters:
-
- [path\]filename - tells FLEXPAD to
- load the specified file; if no
- path is specified, the default
- data file directory is assumed
-
- /C:[path] - tells FLEXPAD to store
- its configuration file in the
- specified directory; this
- setting overrides any setting
- in the DOS environment
-
- /B:[number] - tells FLEXPAD how many
- 4k (4,000 byte) memory blocks
- to allocate for holding the
- data file in memory. By default
- FLEXPAD claims all available
- memory.
-
- /R - installs FLEXPAD as a memory
- resident program (on HP
- Palmtops only). See
- README.TXT for further
- information.
-
- /W: - this allows you to change the
- names of days of the week. Type
- the names, in 3 letter format,
- right after the ":".
- (/W:SunMonTueWed...)
-
- /M: - this allows you to change the
- names of months of the year.
- Type the names, in 3 letter
- format, right after the ":".
- (M:JanFebMarApr...)
-
- /L: - change the name and location
- of the Clipboard file. By
- default its [config directory]\
- FLEXPAD.CLP. With this switch,
- you specify a new name [and
- subdirectory]. If you do not
- specify a directory, the file
- will be given the specified
- name in the config directory.
-
- /8 - tells Flexpad to automatically
- switch into 80 by 25 display
- mode on the HP 100/200LX
- Palmtops whenever the Week or
- Monthly calendar grid views
- are selected. When you switch
- to another view, the previous
- display mode will be
- reactivated.
-
-
- ────────────────────────────────────
- Unable to create config file
-
- FLEXPAD was trying to create a file to
- hold user configuration information.
- This error suggests a problem with
- disk access that will likely affect
- the rest of the program. FLEXPAD
- therefore terminates after you clear
- the message. FLEXPAD looks for the
- file (FLEXPAD.CFG) in the "C:\"
- directory and creates a new file if
- none is found. The disk may be full
- or write-protected. To specify
- another drive/subdirectory, use the
- /C: command line switch or the FLPCFG
- environment variable. For examples,
- see the readme file.
-
- ────────────────────────────────────
- Config settings reset
-
- Something was wrong with the settings
- data in the configuration file and
- FLEXPAD reset the settings to their
- default values. This can occur if your
- config file was missing or damaged.
- It might also happen when you first
- start up a new version of FLEXPAD if
- the config file format was changed
- between versions (generally the
- readme.txt file will warn you that
- this will happen).
-
- ────────────────────────────────────
- File not found
-
- The file you specified was not found.
- If the file is not located in the
- default directory then you must
- specify the complete path.
-
- ────────────────────────────────────
- File not found-empty file created
-
- FLEXPAD was unable to find the data
- file specified on the command line or
- in the config file. This could be
- because you deleted the file or an
- incomplete path was specified and
- FLEXPAD is looking in the wrong
- place. (It is best to use a complete
- Drive and path file specification.) At
- this point FLEXPAD has set up an empty
- file with no name. When you try to
- save the file, you will be asked to
- give it a name. This message will only
- appear at program startup. At other
- times FLEXPAD will inform you that a
- file cannot be found and will not try
- to load a non-existent file.
-
- ────────────────────────────────────
- File name error
-
- The file name you've given has too
- many characters (more than 8) before
- the "." or too many (more than 3)
- after the "."
-
- ────────────────────────────────────
- Not Found
-
- No matches were found. Searches begin
- at the position following the cursor
- unless you press F8 to begin at the
- top of the file.
-
- ────────────────────────────────────
- File loading error
- File save error
- Unable to modify config file
-
- DOS reported an error during the
- attempt to load or save the data file
- or modify the config file. Check the
- disk drive. If you specify a drive or
- subdirectory in the file name you must
- give a complete path (i.e., "B:temp"
- fails but "B:\temp" is acceptable).
-
- ────────────────────────────────────
- Text sort not allowed in this view
-
- Text sorting of matching entries is
- available only in the Section,
- Bookmark and (single) Category views
-
- ────────────────────────────────────
- Unable to allocate data memory
-
- Flexpad was unable to allocate the
- memory space it needs to store its
- working copy of your data file. This
- error is so serious that Flexpad
- terminates as it will be incapable of
- working with your data
-
- ────────────────────────────────────
- Not enough room in memory
-
- This messsage appears when FLEXPAD has
- run out of memory to store your data.
- You need to archive some of the data
- to another file.
-
- (FLEXPAD normally allocates all
- available memory as DOS will allow it
- to have, unless you instruct it to
- request only a specific number of
- memory blocks with the /B: command
- line switch. Try increasing the /B:
- setting.)
-
- ────────────────────────────────────
- File too large for memory
-
- The data file is too large to fit in
- the memory space available. It may
- have been created on a computer where
- FLEXPAD had more memory available than
- at present. If you need to increase
- the memory allocated to FLEXPAD when
- it is running as a TSR (popup)
- program, add the "/B:" command line
- switch to the command that loads
- the program (probably in AUTOEXEC.BAT)
- See the section on command line
- switches for further information.
-
- ────────────────────────────────────
- Start date past end date
-
- A repeating label where the start date
- is greater than the end date will
- never appear in a calendar view.
- FLEXPAD refuses to save an entry
- containing this error.
-
- ────────────────────────────────────
- Date beyond limits
-
- The date you've specified is not a
- valid date. Dates must be in the range
- Jan 1, 1980 -- Nov 17, 2065.
-
- ────────────────────────────────────
- "Must provide a date
-
- The date in this label can't be left
- blank as it marks the first day from
- which the interval repetitions follow.
-
- ────────────────────────────────────
- Past End date--marked done
-
- Your attempt to set a repeating todo's
- Next: due date with settoNextrepeat
- resulted in a date past the current
- End date for the todo; the todo has
- been set to the completely done status
- (Next date = End date + 1). To set a
- later Next date, you must blank out
- the End date or set it to a date
- after your chosen Next date
-
- ────────────────────────────────────
- Can't find help file
-
- The help file cannot be found. Either
- it was deleted or its not at the
- location specified on in the config
- file. You can change the help file
- location {Settings|File|Help}.
-
- ────────────────────────────────────
- Directory not found
-
- The directory you specify must exist.
- You can create it using DOS or the
- 95LX' Filer. An "\" is required at
- the end of the specification.
-
- ────────────────────────────────────
- Disk is full
-
- There was not enough room on the
- specified disk to hold the file that
- FLEXPAD attempted to save. If you
- have "Use temporary backup files"
- {Util More·config} set to "Yes," you
- might try setting it to "No." That
- will prevent FLEXPAD from making a
- temporary backup copy of the original
- file during the save process but at
- the RISK of losing the last saved
- copy of your data.
-
- ────────────────────────────────────
-
- Too many matches
-
- In keeping track of which entries are
- displayed in a view, FLEXPAD allocates
- a finite number of match slots. That
- capacity can be overrun only when your
- file contains many repeating entries
- and you are using the Monthly view,
- you search for all paragraphs in a
- large file or search for a very common
- phrase ("the" or "e", for example).
-
- ────────────────────────────────────
- #Too many labels in file
-
- FLEXPAD keeps track of the labels in
- your file in order to speed searches.
- A finite amount of memory is set aside
- for this task. You have more labels
- in your file than FLEXPAD can track.
- FLEXPAD will keep working but the
- search results may be incomplete.
-
- To remedy this, you need to break your
- file into two or more files or delete
- or archive some labels.
-
- ────────────────────────────────────
- Too many search phrases
-
- Flexpad allows up to 5 separate search
- phrases to be entered, separated by
- the "|" character. You've entered 6
- or more phrases.
-
- ────────────────────────────────────
- Label truncated
-
- FLEXPAD limits custom priority and
- category labels to 30 characters each.
- You have entered a label longer than
- this and FLEXPAD has deleted the
- characters beyond position 30.
-
- ────────────────────────────────────
- 'Appends you were making to the
- clipboard will be lost
-
- This warning is given when you perform
- a regular cut or copy to the clipboard
- after having added to it with the
- clipboard append functions. Its
- purpose is to make sure that you want
- to lose the clipboard's contents.
-
- ────────────────────────────────────
- HP Palmtop required for TSR mode
-
- FLEXPAD is designed to be run as a
- popup (TSR) program on the HP 95LX
- palmtop only. On other PC's,
- multitasking programs such as
- Windows or DESQview allow switching
- among programs. FLEXPAD's memory
- requirements make it unlikely that
- you would have enough room to run any
- other significant applications along
- with it if it loaded as a TSR on
- those computers. On the HP 95LX
- Palmtop, running FLEXPAD as a TSR
- allows you to switch between it and
- the built-in programs without having
- to exit and restart FLEXPAD.
-
- On the HP 100/200LX Palmtops, you
- can switch between Flexpad and the
- built-in programs by using their
- Application Manager just as you would
- with any other DOS based program
