- PULSE8 DOCUMENTATION
- -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
-
- Well, first I expect you want to know what all the keys and icons do :-
-
- KEYS
- ====
-
- F1: F1 represents the contrast button, and you can use this feature to invert
- the colors on the spectrum analyzer display.
-
- F2: This switches the spectrum analyzer display between "frequency bar chart"
- mode and "wave-display" mode.
-
- F3: This toggles the output through either the PC speaker (squeeker) or a DAC
- connected to LPT1 (the first printer port). (See circuit and warnings
- about DAC later).
-
- F4: This button switches on the main spectrum analyzer display in the middle
- of the screen.
-
- F5: This switches toggles the output volume control on/off. With output on,
- and PC speaker selected, this will operate a sort of volume enchancement
- to try to make the sound louder. This usually results in distortion of
- the sound, and is NOT recommended. If the DAC is being used, you can then
- use keys [9] and [0] to increase and decrease the volume of the music.
-
- F6: Used to switch on the neon waveform behind the logo at the top of the
- display. Requires a large amount of processing power, and is only
- recommended for 486 upwards.
-
- F7: Switches sound output on. See F3 explanation.
-
- F8: This toggles between 64 bar and 128 bar analyzer. This option is only
- available on the registered version. See later for information on
- registering for your personal copy of PULSE8.
-
- F9: This toggles the BEAT-O-MATIC function on/off. The speakers in the
- corners of the screen will now thump to the beat of the music. The
- screen will also flash to the bass/beat. The small speaker is the high
- freq., the medium is mid-range, and the large one is bass/woofer.
-
- F10: This changes the on-screen clock between 12/24 hour modes.
-
- F11: This engages the PLASMATRON, the ultimate in rave combo. Do not initiate
- this function unless you are completely insane. Whilst in this mode, I
- have added two xtra functions. Pressing [SPACE] will give you an inverse
- image, and, for those who are completely insane (or just don't care),
- pressing [I] will add in the X-I mode (Xtra-Insane). (I have been told
- that it looks good while smoking illegal substances). Only in registered
- version.
-
- F12: This is for the MANDEL-VISION. This will give a realtime waveform
- analysis 'alpha'ed (*) over a mandelbrot background. Only in registered
- version.
-
- (*): ALPHA is a term used to describe the simulation of glass or color
- filters applied to computer graphics. Mostly ray-tracing.
-
- ESC: Use this to exit PULSE8.
-
- + : This key on the numeric keypad increases the number of samples taken
- when using the "frequency bar chart" option of the analyzer.
-
- - : This decreases the number of samples taken. These functions are for
- adjusting the speed of the program to match differing computers.
- Changing the original value will stop the BEAT-O-MATIC from functioning
- properly, as it is optimized for operating under the original sample
- rate.

- INTRODUCTION TO PULSE8
- ========================
-
- PULSE8 was written to allow you to 'see' music as it plays. It basically
- does the same job as a spectrum analyzer that you see on the front of
- stereo systems, only with more bars and xtra features. If you use your PC for
- mostly playing games, then perhaps you haven't used the sampling abilities
- on your SOUNDBLASTER (or compatible). Here's your chance.
- To use PULSE8, you must first have some music source (such as a Walkman,
- or stereo) connected to one of the INPUT ports of the SOUNDBLASTER card. If
- you do not know how to connect your card up, then please refer to the manual.
- To connect a walkman, you will usually need a mono 3.5mm jack plug to
- 3.5mm jack plug lead.
- Once you have your music connected, type PULSE8 to start the program.
- You will now be presented with the main screen (hopefully) of PULSE8.
- Hit F4, and bars should now appear. Fiddle with the function to get various
- other effects.
-
- INTRODUCTION TO ESCHATON
- ========================
-
- ESCHATON (the producers of this program - "PULSE8") are a small two person
- development team based in Dover, England. We have developed a number of
- games and utilites, none of which we have ever released - this is the first
- program we have released. If we get enough funding from this, then we will
- continue to produce more quality software.
-
- This program was developed originally in Turbo C++, but then I (Chaz
- Bocock) rewrote the whole thing in pure assembly language using Turbo
- Assembler. It now runs to about 1500 lines of code. I used my
- 486sx for the coding, and the graphics were done on a 286(!) by partner
- Ian Ruthven in Deluxe Paint II (enhanced) and CorelPaint.
-
- Currently we are working on a platform game (8 layer parallax etc), a new,
- radical form of video compression and enchancement (should be able to
- realtime texture-map video images on a 286(!) and store hours of video on
- a floppy(!). The detail won't be brilliant, but will be better than Video
- for Windows.), and also a new form of surround-sound that should be the most
- realistic sounding algorithm available. (That is as soon as I buy a stereo
- sound-card. - PLEASE REGISTER)
-
- If there is enough response from this version (1.00) then in future versions
- expect to see ability to play MODs and CDs and also there should be stereo
- 'viewing'. (And some smart video).
-
-
- eschatology n. the branch of theology concerned with the end of the world.
- (did you really want to live forever?)
