- Installation Information
- ========================
-
- The Paramount Interactive Demo installation creates the program
- group and program icons necessary for testing and executing the
- demonstration software. No files are copied to the hard disk;
- therefore, the PI Demo CD must be in the CD ROM drive in order
- to run the demo.
-
- This demo launches four demonstration applications - Busytown,
- Lenny's Music Toons, Rock Rap 'N Roll and Movie Select - with
- rolling demos.
-
- Before beginning the installation,
-
- - Check the hardware and software requirement to make sure
- that the demo computer meets the minimum specifications.
-
- - Check that the Creative Labs Sound Blaster or Sound Blaster
- Pro card is properly installed with current Sound Blaster
- windows drivers and that the blaster environmental variable is
- set in the autoexec.bat file.
-
- - In Windows, go to the Control Panel and check the drivers to
- see if the Video for Windows and Cinepak Codec by
- SuperMatch drivers are installed.
-
- - Make sure the mouse driver is loaded from DOS.
-
-
- Installation
- ============
-
- - Insert the demo CD into the CD ROM drive.
-
- - Install the demo by running <cd>:setup.exe (<cd> is the drive
- letter of the demo CD). The setup program creates the PIDemo
- group, and adds the Paramount Interactive Demo, Sound Test,
- Video for Windows Install and Busytown icons.
-
- - If Video for Windows is not installed, install the Video for
- Windows runtime version double clicking the Video for
- Windows Install icon in the PIDemo program group.
-
- - If the Cinepak Codec by SuperMatch driver is not installed,
- install the driver by opening up the drivers applet in the Control
- Panel and pushing the Add... button. Select Unlisted or
- Updated driver in the Add dialog. Type <cd>:\cinepak (<cd> is
- the drive letter of the demo CD).
-
- - Open up the MIDI mapper applet in the Control Panel select the
- Show Setup radio button and set the name to SB All FM for SB
- card and SBP2 All FM for SBPRO card. The name may vary
- slightly depending on the version of the Sound Blaster drivers
- being used. Just be sure to select the All FM name. Refer to
- the CONFIGURING LENNY'S MUSIC TOONS at the end of this
- document.
-
- - Test sound by double clicking the Sound Test program in the
- PIDemo program group. Push the WAV button. If no WAV
- sounds are played: check the Sound Blaster card and make sure
- it is installed properly, check the Windows sound drivers and
- make sure they are current drivers for the installed card, check
- the speakers and make sure they are connected properly. Push
- the MIDI button, if no MIDI sounds are played, make sure the
- instructions for setting the MIDI mapper were followed
- correctly.
-
- - Test Busytown by double clicking on the Busytown icon in the
- PIDemo program group. Busytown is a DOS application which
- requires 540Kb of conventional memory. If the Busytown
- application shuts down immediately, the demo machine
- probably does not have enough conventional memory. Free up
- conventional memory by removing unnecessary TSR programs
- and drivers or loading them high. On DOS 6 try running
- memmaker to free up memory. See Troubleshooting section for
- more potential Busytown problems.
-
- - If the DMABUFFERSIZE is too small, an error message will
- come up when you run Busytown which tells you how big it
- must be. Edit the system.ini file appropriately and restart
- Windows. If no sound plays from Busytown, check the
- autoexec.bat file and make sure that the blaster environmental
- variable is being set correctly. Try reinstalling the Sound Blaster
- software if necessary.
-
- - Turn off any screen savers which are installed.
- This completes the demo software installation. Double click on the
- Paramount Interactive Demo icon to run the demo.
-
-
- Troubleshooting
- ===============
- - Make sure installation instructions were followed correctly.
-
- - Demo runs in a window instead of full screen. Demo machine is
- running with a screen resolution > 640x480. Run Windows
- Setup from the control panel and switch screen to 640x480 256
- color mode.
-
- - Demo colors are of very poor quality. Demo machine may not
- be in 256 color mode. Run Windows Setup from the control
- panel and switch to 256 color mode.
-
- - Mouse does not work in Busytown. Make sure that the mouse
- driver is being loaded from DOS.
-
- - If Busytown starts with a blue screen asking for the type of
- sound card in the machine, make sure that the
- set blaster =
- line is in the autoexec.bat file and the parameters are correct for
- the card. If you are not sure, reinstall the Sound Blaster
- software.
-
- - If Busytown gives an error saying that the device is in use,
- bring up the Control Panel and run the Drivers applet. Make
- sure that no sound drivers (e.g. Adlib, other Sound Blaster
- cards) are installed except for the drivers for the card installed
- in the demo machine. If extra drivers are installed, remove
- them and restart Windows.
-
-
- - If all else fails, call Paramount Interactive Support at
- (317) 581-3845.

- CONFIGURING LENNY'S MUSIC ROOM
- ==============================
-
- THE MIDI MAPPER
- The MIDI Mapper utility is a program which translates MIDI data
- in specific ways. The program is called a mapper because it
- literally remaps different classes of midi data into new values.
- The types of MIDI data remapped or reassigned new values are
- Patch, Channel, and Key information.
-
- For the most part, the MIDI data that Lenny provides for the
- sound card's on board synthesizer should require little or no
- adjustments with the Midi Mapper. The "Name" should have the
- card's synth map file for the "All FM". The most common
- adjustment needed is the reassignment of channel 10 which holds
- the percussion part due to variations in sound card synths. The
- symptom of this error is when a MIDI file sounds as if it is
- playing many "wrong notes". These "wrong notes" are supposed to
- be percussion sounds and if the synthesizer doesn't understand
- these sounds in channel 10, it should understand them in channel
- 16. If correct, then the "wrong notes" will now sound roughly
- like percussion instruments.
-
- 1. To make this adjustment do the following :
-
- 2. go to the Control Panel
-
- 3. click on the Midi Mapper icon
-
- 4. click on Setups
-
- 5. click on Edit. The 16 channel display of Source,
- Destination, Port Name, and Patch Map Name will appear.
-
- 6. find channel Source 10
-
- 7. in the Destination column, change the value to 16.
-
- 8. return to Lenny's MusicToons or Lenny's Sound Test to play
- different MIDI files.
-
-
- MIDI "STUCK NOTES"
- With some sound cards occasionally some MIDI notes can "stick".
- That is to say, the note starts but isn't shut off. The result
- is that notes continually hold and play incessantly. Irritating!
- We suspect that the sound card is getting into a non responsive
- and "ambiguous" state. One thing to try is to do a "hardware reset"
- of your computer. The hardware reset is usually a pushbutton located
- on your computer which resets all of the hardware, then reboots
- the system. Or if you don't have a hardware reset on your computer(ugh!),
- you can shut off your computer, wait awhile, then turn it on again
- and try Lenny again.
