- UnInstaller(TM) Readme File
- Version 5.10
-
-
- This README file contains the following sections:
-
- If you are upgrading from a previous version of UnInstaller
- Dual Boot systems (Windows 3.1 or Windows NT)
- Windows NT
- Changes to the "Getting Started" manual
- Notices
- Quick View and Quick View Plus
- Using the Update feature
- Technical Support
-
- If you are upgrading from a previous version of UnInstaller
- ==========================================================
-
- Backward compatibility
- ----------------------
-
- UnInstaller 5.10 will restore backups created with UnInstaller
- version 4.0 or later. If the old backups do not appear
- automatically in the Restore wizard, click the Browse button
- to locate the folder where the old version of UnInstaller kept
- these files.
-
-
- Dual Boot systems (Windows 3.1 or Windows NT)
- ==================================================
-
- On a dual-boot system, you can have combinations of the following:
-
- DOS
- Windows 3.1
- Windows 95/98
- Windows NT
-
- UnInstaller 5.1 is a Windows 95/98/NT product only. However,
- UnInstaller can remove any application installed under Windows
- 95/98 or NT (including DOS, 16-bit and 32-bit applications).
-
- When UnInstaller analyzes your system it uses the operating
- system it is running under at that time -- Windows 95 or Windows NT.
- The other Windows operating system is not loaded, and its files
- appear as another application rather than as an operating
- system. For this reason, UnInstaller should not be used under
- one version of Windows to delete applications installed under
- the other version of Windows.
-
-
- Windows NT
- ==========
-
- Installing under Windows NT
- ---------------------------
- If you are installing UnInstaller on a computer running the
- Windows NT 4.0 operating system, you must have Service Pack 1
- for NT installed, and you must be logged into your computer as
- a user who has Administrator privileges.
-
- UnInstaller 5.1 on Windows NT
- -----------------------------
- The Installation Monitor and BackTrack features of
- UnInstaller 5.1 only work on Windows 95/98 and not with Windows
- NT.
-
-
- Changes to the "Getting Started" manual
- =======================================
-
- BackTrack
- ---------
- The BackTrack wizard does not display colored icons to
- rate the restore possible from Installation Monitor
- backup files.
-
- Backup files are rated Recommended or Not Recommended.
- Recommended backup files can be used to completely undo a
- monitored application installation. Not Recommended backup
- files can be used, but will undo installation only to the
- extent that undoing it is safe.
-
- For more information, see the Help file.
-
- QuickClean
- ----------
- The Configuration Cleaner and the System Cleaner are not
- included in this version of UnInstaller. QuickClean does
- not remove invalid references in system files, such as
- Win.ini or Autoexec.bat.
-
-
- Notices
- =======
-
- Uninstalling operating system updates or Internet Explorer
- ----------------------------------------------------------
-
- Do not use UnInstaller to remove updates to the Windows
- operating system, such as Internet Explorer 4.0, Microsoft Plus!
- and Windows NT Service Packs. Use the Windows uninstall program
- in the Add/Remove Programs control panel applet to uninstall
- these updates.
-
-
- Removing Norton Utilities and McAfee Nuts & Bolts
- -------------------------------------------------
-
- OEM Service Release 2 (OSR2) has a self diagnostic feature that
- determines if the last Windows 95 session was properly shut down. If
- not, OSR2 offers to run SCANDISK.EXE to check for disk errors. Both
- Norton Utilities and Nuts & Bolts directly modify the WIN.COM file
- to launch their disk utilities instead of SCANDISK.EXE.
-
- For safety reasons, the Uninstaller 5 Remove feature does NOT
- directly modify the WIN.COM file. Use the native uninstallers for
- these programs, located in the Add/Remove control panel applet,
- to remove these two products.
-
-
- Norton Utilities and UnInstaller
- -------------------------------------------
-
- If you have turned on the Norton Utilities Protected Recycle Bin
- option, then using UnInstaller to remove Norton Utilities may cause
- the Recycle Bin to stop working. Use the uninstall program that
- Norton Utilities adds to the Add/Remove Programs control panel
- applet to remove at least the Protected Recycle Bin component
- (Norton Unerase) before removing the remainder of the program
- with UnInstaller.
-
- Empty the Norton Protected Recycle Bin periodically to
- regain disk space occupied by deleted files.
-
- - If you have the Norton Utilities Protected Recycle Bin option
- installed on your computer, all files deleted by
- UnInstaller will be "protected" by this Norton Utilities
- option and stored in the NProtect virtual folder under
- C:\Recycled.
-
- - The Norton Utilities Protected Recycle Bin option
- also protects temporary setup files that are usually deleted
- after applications are installed. If you use the UnInstaller
- Installation Monitor to monitor application setup programs,
- the Installation Monitor report shows that these files were
- added to the C:\Recycled\NProtect folder.
-
- Installation Monitor is not compatible with Norton SpeedStart. Disable
- SpeedStart before using Installation Monitor.
-
-
- Finjan SurfinShield
- -------------------
- Because Finjan SurfinShield replaces many key operating system
- files, it is strongly recommended that you remove this product
- with its native uninstaller, which is located in the Add/Remove
- control panel applet.
-
-
- Installation Monitor
- --------------------
-
- If you use UnInstaller's Installation Monitor to monitor the
- installation of an application, we recommend that you do not
- select the option, if offered, to automatically launch the
- application immediately after installation. Exit from the
- installation program so that the UnInstaller Installation
- Monitor can complete its analysis and generate the necessary
- information database.
-
- If the application is automatically launched by its setup
- program, we recommend that you close the application
- immediately so that the UnInstaller Installation Monitor can
- complete its analysis and generate the necessary database and
- reports. The UnInstaller Installation Monitor will complete
- its analysis after the application has been closed.
-
-
- Installation Monitor and application suites
- -------------------------------------------
-
- We recommend that you do not use the UnInstaller Installation
- Monitor to monitor the installation of suites, such as Office
- '97 or Lotus SmartSuite. These are very long installation
- programs and the monitoring process will extend the time
- required to install. When UnInstaller scans your hard
- drive, it automatically recognizes suites and all the
- components installed. This approach saves you time while
- ensuring a complete knowledge of your system.
-
- UnInstaller and Mijenix ZipMagic/ZipFolders
- -------------------------------------------
-
- There are known problems using Installation Monitor and the
- BackTrack UnInstaller features when Mijenix ZipMagic or
- ZipFolders is in use. To prevent problems, refer to
- the Mijenix documentation and add the following to the
- ZipFolders/ZipMagic exclusion lists:
-
- APPARCHV.EXE
- APPCLEAN.EXE
- APPDEL.EXE
- APPMOVE.EXE
- APPTPORT.EXE
- PWRCLEAN.EXE
- IMONITOR.EXE
- IRESTORE.EXE
- RESTORE.EXE
- SPMAKER.EXE
- UNI.EXE
-
-
- Standard Windows files
- ----------------------
-
- As UnInstaller analyzes some applications that contain
- shortcuts, or links, to standard Windows files, you will see
- message dialog boxes telling you that the Windows file is
- protected, and asking if you want to delete the file.
-
- If you choose to delete these files, both the file and the
- shortcut, or link (LNK) file will be deleted.
-
- If you do not choose to delete these files, UnInstaller will
- delete only the shortcut, or link (LNK) file,
- that points to the file; UnInstaller will not delete the
- actual file that is pointed to.
-
-
- Transporting applications
- -------------------------
-
- UnInstaller supports only the transport of applications between
- PCs that have the same operating system. You can transport an
- application from a PC running Windows 95 to another PC running
- Windows 95. You can also transport an application from a PC
- running Windows NT 4.0 and another PC running Windows NT 4.0.
-
- You cannot transfer an application from a PC running Windows 95
- to a PC running Windows NT 4.0, or vice versa.
-
-
- SmartLinks database building
- ----------------------------
-
- As it scans your computer, UnInstaller may try to access the
- A:\ drive.
-
- This happens if shortcuts (LNK files) found in the
- \Windows\Recent folder, any OLE drag/drop activity and other
- embedded objects point to the A:\ drive. This scan does not
- require a disk to be in the drive.
-
-
- UnInstaller Backup, BackTrack and Archive file format
- ----------------------------------------------------------------
-
- Backup files (*.U5B), archive files (*.U5A), and BackTrack files
- (*.BTA) created by UnInstaller are stored in ZIP format
- and can be viewed and extracted using third-party ZIP utilities.
-
-
- Quick View and Quick View Plus
- ------------------------------
-
- Quick View is a component of Windows 95/98 and is enabled for
- viewing files with UnInstaller's PowerClean dialog box. This
- component is included on the Windows 95 CD-ROM, both upgrade
- and full product. It is not included on the Windows 95 disk
- set.
-
- If you do not have Windows 95/98 on CD-ROM, you can download the
- QuickView component from the Microsoft on-line services.
-
- Note: Quick View is not part of the default setup
- configuration for Windows 95/98. It needs to be installed
- as an Accessory.
-
- To install Quick View from the CD-ROM, choose Settings in the
- Windows 95/98 Start menu. Select Control Panel and select
- Add/Remove Programs. Click on the Windows Setup Tab and
- select Accessories. Scroll through the list to find Quick
- View, select Quick View by clicking in the box and click OK.
-
- Quick View Plus is an enhanced version of the Windows 95 Quick
- View.
-
- It is fully compatible with UnInstaller and enhances
- the viewing capability of Quick View from 29 file types to
- over 200 different file types. Quick View Plus does not
- require that Quick View be installed in order to run; it
- actually replaces or can be used in place of Quick View.
-
- To order Quick View Plus, or for more information on this
- product, please contact Inso Corporation at www.inso.com,
- (800) 333-1395, or (312) 329-0700.
-
-
- Using the Update feature
- ========================
-
- Update Issues
- -------------
-
- If you use CompuServe or America Online as your Internet
- provider, you must first be logged onto the service before
- running Update from the main UnInstaller screen.
-
- Using Update
- ------------
-
- UnInstaller requires a specific version of Oil Change in order
- to update itself. If you have Oil Change installed but you
- get an error message when you click the Update button, or if
- you do not have Oil Change installed, install the version of
- Oil Change that is included on the UnInstaller CD.
-
- To install Oil Change:
-
- 1. Insert the UnInstaller CD in the CD-ROM drive
- and close the drive door.
- If the Windows 95 AutoPlay feature is enabled,
- installation starts automatically
-
- 2. If you don't see the Setup screen, click
- the Windows Start menu and select Run. Click the Browse
- button. Then select your CD-ROM drive from the Look In
- drop down box.
-
- Double-click Setup.exe, then click OK in the Run dialog
- box.
-
- 4. On the Setup screen, click Install Other
- software products.
-
- 5. Click the Oil Change icon to start the Oil
- Change installation program.
-
- The Oil Change Setup program will provide you with
- detailed installation instructions and suggestions.
-
- To change connection settings or use Update with a Proxy
- server:
-
- 1. Run Oil Change and select the Option button.
- 2. In Options, click the Connection tab.
- 3. Change connection and proxy server settings, as
- required.
