- \format
- \bold \\BOLD\bold : Turn bolded text on/off. Remains in effect until the next
- \indent 7
- \\bold command. Once to turn on, another time to turn off.
-
- \it \ul Example: \it \ul
-
- \indent 5
- This will cause the words "Alexander the Great" to be in bold text. It
- can be used for a nice emphasis effect.
-
- \freeformat
- 1.) The great conqueror \\bold Alexander the Great \\bold lived
- in Macedonia (I think :).

- \bold \\UNDERLINE\bold : Turn on/off underlining. Suitable for book titles,
- \indent 12
- or any other text that needs a line underneath it.
-
- \it \ul Example: \it \ul
-
- \indent 5
- This will cause the Title "Grapes of Wrath" to be underlined in a way
- that would even make Strunk and White proud....
-
- \freeformat
- 1.) The novel \\underline Grapes of Wrath \\underline by John
- Steinbeck was published god knows when.

-
-
- \format
- \bold \\ITALICS\bold : Put text in italics. Use it once to turn italics on,
- \indent 10
- another time to turn them off. Useful for those
- wonderful little Latin anacronyms \ital (viz., e.g., c.f., etc.).\ital
-
- \it \ul Example: \it \ul
-
- \indent 5
- If you want your references to look really hep, just like a book, do the
- following.
-
- \FReeformat
- 1.) In retrospect we see Hannibal (\\italic c.f. \\italic elephant
- driver) was a brilliant general.
-
- In retrospect we see Hannibal (\italic c.f. \italic elephant
- driver) was a brilliant general.
-
- \indent 5
- \format
- Actually this one should be linked so that you can listen to some of his
- music. Links and styles *CAN* be nested.
-
- \freeformat
- 2.) Vivaldi's \\italic Four Seasons \\italic is a pretty happenin'
- piece of music.
- Vivaldi's \italic Four Seasons \italic is a pretty happenin'
- piece of music.
-
-
-
-
- \bold \\CENTER \bold : Cause any text up to the next blank line to be centered for the
- \indent 10
- given window width (which is by default full screen). This is
- useful for section headings, and such. Each line is taken
- individually and centered. When a blank line is encountered
- (because of two returns in a row), centering is turned off. This
- keyword works nicely with \\Underlining, etc. It can give you
- an almost book like feel to section and chapter headings.
- If you are using a different font than the default, you should
- be sensitive to how wide you make your lines, as if they are too
- large, they will be broken to fit the display.
-
- \freeformat
- \it \ul Example: \it \ul
- 1.) \\Center
- This line is centered in my window!
-
- This line is not.
-
- \bold Example (1) would be displayed as : \bold
-
- \center
- This line is centered in my window!
-
- This line is not.
-
-
-
-
- \bold \\INDENT [num]\bold : Indent the following text up to the next double return
- \indent 16
- (usually the end of a paragraph). The indent will default
- to 15 spaces if you omit it, or you can put however many
- spaces you want to the next paragraph to be indented. This
- is useful for large quotes from some other reference.
- Don't get silly with large indenting over 70 spaces.
- It is also wise to remember that if you are using a
- large font, an indent of 40 may not even be displayable.
-
- \freeformat
- \it \ul Example: \it \ul
-
- 1.) \\indent 20
- I want this paragraph indented 20 spaces, and formatted nicely. I
- am probably quoting someone, or I just want this text to *REALLY*
- standout. Pretty nifty eh?
-
- \format
- \indent 20
- I want this paragraph indented 20 spaces, and formatted nicely. I am

- Pretty nifty eh?
-
- Now I am back to regular text because before this line, there were
- two returns in a row.
-
- \freeformat
- 2.) \\indent
- This text is going to utilize the default indenting of 15 spaces.
- It is going to indent like this until I hit the two return
- characters in a row.
-
- Which just happened. So I'm back to normal formatting now.

- \format
- \bold \\FORMAT \bold : Embedding this command into a text file will \bold immediately
- \indent 10
- \bold turn on the paragraph filling (formatting) HT does. Before you get scared of
- it, the formatting done by HT is mainly to try and fit as many words on a
- line as possible. This will cause things (hopefully) to look nice. HT
- will fill paragraphs, and paragraph is considered to be any text up to a
- blank line.
-
- \indent 10
- The idea is that if you are writing a document directly for HT,
- you would probably want to make sure it has nicely filled lines. Although
- you are \bold not \bold required to do this, it is an option. You will
- find though, that when you start embedding lots of '\\' commands, it will
- become difficult to tell where line breaks fall, and so it is just easier
- to let HT take care of that for you.
-
-
-
- \bold \\FREEFORMAT \bold : This command is the opposite of the \\FORMAT command.
- \indent 15 The \\FREEFORMAT keyword will remain in effect
- until another \\FORMAT command is found. This
- is useful for sections of text which should be left as is
- (poems, \ital etc\ital ).
-
- \indent 15
- Remember, even when \\Freeformat is in effect, you \it can \it still use
- link/style commands. The \\Freeformat effect can be turned off by
- embedding a \\FORMAT command where you would like to have text formatting
- turned back on.
-
- \indent 15
- Finally, this command is the default setting for how HT formats text. So
- you aren't required to do anything special to use all the existing text files
- that you have!
