- The File Menu provides menu items for operating on files. The items available
- are:

- 1. Text Search which allows you to search for a given string of text.

- 2. File Search which allows you to find a file (or group of files) when you
- are uncertain as to their location on your disk or disks.
-
- 3. Delete Files which allows you to delete a file (or group of files) when you
- are uncertain as to their location on your disk or disks.

- There are no shortkeys assigned to these items.

- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1.1. Text Search Help ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

- Text Search provides a powerful utility for searching for the occurance of a
- search string within a file or files. Any file which contains the search
- string will be displayed in the list box. The user then has the choice to View
- an individual file or to Print the list of file names which contain the search
- string.
-
- Once a search has been initiated, the drive, path, and file name being searched
- is displayed following the word "Searching".
-
- The user can specify the following items to control the search.
-
- File Spec
- The user can enter the file specification to use during the search. This
- field can be any valid OS/2 file name. Wildcards are acceptable.
-
- Search Pattern
- The user enters the search text pattern. Wildcards are not expanded, but
- are treated literally.
-
- Drive and Path
- The user can specify the drive and/or directory to begin the search. This
- field may be ignored, depending on the Scope rules in effect at the time.
-
- The user can also press the Options button to specify the Scope and Options
- parameters.
-
- The buttons displayed perform the following functions:
-
- Ok
- Initiates the text search.
-
- Exit
- Exits the text search procedure.
-
- Help
- Displays this message.
-
- Cancel
- This key will cause the search thread to terminate in an orderly manner
- and return control to you. The cancellation may not be instantaneous but
- should occur in a reasonable time period. You will know that the search
- has been terminated when the other buttons become useable.

- Print
- This button will print the file names currently in the list box to the
- system printer connected to LPT1.
-
- View
- This button will invoke the system editor and cause the editor to open the
- file currently highlighted in the list box.

- Delete Files provides a method for deleting files wherever they may be located
- on your disk or disks. Any file which matches the File Spec, Scope and Options
- will be displayed in the list box. The user then has the choice to Exclude an
- individual file or to Delete the files named in the list box. No files are
- deleted until the Delete option has been selected.

- Once a search has been initiated, the drive and path being searched is
- displayed following the word "Searching".

- The user can specify the following items to control the search.

- File Spec
- The user can enter the file specification to use during the search. This
- field can be any valid OS/2 file name. Wildcards are acceptable.

- Drive and Path
- The user can specify the drive and/or directory to begin the search. This

- deleted. The files will be deleted regardless of the current file
- attributes as this was specified under the Options section. Any file which
- cannot be deleted will display a message box to that effect.

- Exclude
- This button will exclude the file currently highlighted in the list box
- from being deleted.

- This section allows the user to specify the Scope, Options and Attributes which
- apply to the function being performed. The sections below describe the items
- which can be set. Not all items are available to all functions. When an item
- is not available, it will not be displayed in the dialog box.

- The following items establish the Scope. Only one item can be selected at any
- one time.
-
- Current Directory
- The scope is limited to the current drive and path. No subdirectories are
- searched.
-
- Current + Children
- The scope will start with the current drive and path, but will search all
- included subdirectories until the end of each branch is reached.
-
- Current Drive
- The scope will be the entire contents of the current drive. The path
- specified under Drive and Path will be ignored.
-
- All Disks
- All disk drives, beginning with C:, will be searched. Both the drive and
- path specified under Drive and Path will be ignored.
-
- Floppy A:
- The scope will be the entire contents of the floppy drive A:. The path
- specified under Drive and Path will be ignored.
-
- Floppy B:
- The scope will be the entire contents of the floppy drive B:. The path
- specified under Drive and Path will be ignored.

- The following items establish the Options. Any number of the items may be
- selected.

- Hidden Files
- Include files which have the hidden files attribute set in the search.
-
- Read Only Files
- Include files which have the read only attribute set in the search.
-
- System Files
- Include files which have the system attribute set in the search.
-
- Confirm Delete
- Before deleting files, display a confirmation dialog box to make sure that
- the user wants to delete the indicated files.
-
- The following items establish the Attributes. Each item must be answered, by
- accepting the default or setting your choice, when they appear as choices.

- Hidden Attribute
- The "Hidden" attribute can be Set, Cleared or Ignored
-
- System Attribute
- The "System" attribute can be Set, Cleared or Ignored
-
- Read Only Attribute
- The "Read Only" attribute can be Set, Cleared or Ignored

- Archive Attribute
- The "Archive" attribute can be Set, Cleared or Ignored

- The Disk Menu provides menu items for operating on disks. The items available
- are:

- 1. Statistics which provides you with information about the selected disk and
- with information about the selected directory.
-
- 2. Delete Tree which deletes the entire contents of the selected directory
- and removes the directory. All subdirectories are deleted and removed
- regardless of the level of nesting.
-
- There are no shortkeys assigned to these items.

- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.1. Disk Statistics Help ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

- Statistics displays the total capacity of the current disk drive and the amount
- of free space on the drive. Once the statistics have been accumulated, the
- space consumed and the number of files which match the File Spec in the base
- directory are displayed. The same information is also displayed for the
- matching files found in the various subdirectories along with the number of
- subdirectories.

- Once a search has been initiated, the drive and path being searched is
- displayed following the word "Searching".

- The user can specify the following items to control the search.

- File Spec
- The user can enter the file specification to use during the search. This
- field can be any valid OS/2 file name. Wildcards are acceptable.

- Drive and Path
- The user can specify the drive and/or directory to begin the search. This
- field may be ignored, depending on the Scope rules in effect at the time.

- Initiates the statistics counting.

- This key will cause the statistics thread to terminate in an orderly
- manner and return control to you. The cancellation may not be
- instantaneous but should occur in a reasonable time period. You will know
- that the search has been terminated when the other buttons become useable.

- Help
- Displays this message.

- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.2. Delete Directories Help ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

- Delete Tree provides a method for deleting a tree, including all of the
- branches from your disk or diskettes. Files will be deleted regardless of the
- file attributes. If a file cannot be deleted, or a directory cannot be
- removed, a message box will be displayed showing the file or directory which
- cannot be deleted.

- Once a delete has been initiated, the drive and path being searched is
- displayed following the word "Deleting".

- The user can specify the drive and/or directory to begin the deletion. This may
- be ignored, depending on the Scope rules in effect at the time.

- The user can also press the Options button to specify the Scope and Options
- parameters.

- be removed and their files deleted.. The files will be deleted regardless

- This item will display copyright and version information for the
- application.

- Use this choice to determine what help is available and how to use the help
- system to find what you are looking for.

- In general, help is available at all times for all items.

- PM File & Disk Utilities provides a number of functions for searching, finding,
- deleting, and providing statistics about your disks and diskettes. The
- functions available are:

- Text Search
- This function will search files for a specified text string.
-
- File Search
- This function will search for files matching the file specification.
-
- Delete Files
- This function will delete files matching the file specification.
-
- Attributes
- This function will change the file attributes of the files matching the
- file specifications.
-
- Statistics
- This function will provide disk and directory statistics for a given drive
- and file specification.
-
- Delete Tree
- This function will delete a tree from a disk by deleting all the files and
- removing all the subdirectories.

- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 9. Delete Failed Help ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

- This dialog box indicates that the program was unable to delete the named file.
-
- This could be due to another process owning the file or another process has
- already deleted the file. The result is that this process will not delete the
- file.
-

- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 10. Change Failed Help ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- This dialog box indicates that the program was unable to change the file
- attributes.
-
- This could be due to another process owning the file or another process has
- already deleted the file. The result is that this process will not change the
- file attributes.

- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 11. Delete Confirmation Help ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

- The program is requesting confirmation that wish to continue. Before any items
- are actually deleted, you are asked to once again confirm that this is
- acceptable.

- If you wish to continue and actually delete the items, select Ok. If you do not
- wish to have the items deleted, select Cancel.
