- SUPPLEMENTAL UTILITIES
- ______________________
-
-
- The Supplemental Utilities for the IBM LaserPrinter 4029
- Series are host personal computer utilities with menu-
- driven installation. The following information describes
- the contents of the Supplemental Utilities package.
-
-
- UTILITIES
- _________
-
- The Supplemental Utilities package includes:
-
- o INSTALLATION UTILITY that you use to install DOS or
- OS/2 utilities.
- o LASERDRIVER UTILITY that provides a method for
- quickly and easily changing the settings on the
- printer. Menu-driven screens let you select and send
- commands to:
- - Choose orientation
- - Download bitmapped and scalable fonts
- - Select fonts
- - Select line spacing
- - Select paper source and size
- - Specify user default settings
- - Select emulations/modes
- - IBM Personal Printer Data Stream (IBM PPDS)
- mode
- - PCL4 emulation or PCL5 emulation, if
- installed, which supports Hewlett-Packard**
- (HP**) LaserJet** Printer Command Language
- (PCL)
- - Plotter mode, which supports Hewlett-Packard
- Graphics Language (HP GL) and IBM Graphics
- Language (IBM GL)
- - PostScript** mode, if installed
- o DOS AND OS/2 AUTOMATIC EMULATION/MODE SWITCHING (AES)
- UTILITY that allows your printer to operate automat-
- ically as more than one printer, managing up to four
- emulations/modes. The emulations/modes are:
- - IBM PPDS mode
- - PCL4 emulation or PCL5 emulation, if installed
- - Plotter mode
- - PostScript mode, if installed
-
- With AES, you can change installed emulations/modes
- automatically from your application instead of from
- the printer operator panel. If you plan to use more
- than one emulation/mode, install the AES utility.
-
-
-
-
- Supplemental Utilities 1-1
-
-
-
-
- IMPORTANT: A README.TXT file is included to provide
- you with additional information about AES and the
- printer. It also lists helpful hints and some appli-
- cation compatibility considerations.
-
- The ports you assign to the different
- emulations/modes are not the physical ports on your
- work station. The names, such as LPT1 and LPT2, are
- virtual ports when using AES. Any one of the
- emulations/modes on these virtual ports is directed
- to the physical port on your host, such as LPT1 or
- COM1, by the AES utility.
- o RESOURCE MANAGER UTILITY that efficiently manages
- printer memory by automatically downloading fonts and
- macros as required by a PPDS job data stream.
- Resource Manager (RM) is an OS/2-only utility and is
- designed to operate with OS/2 Versions Standard
- Edition (SE) 1.3, Extended Edition (EE) 1.3, or
- higher software.
-
-
- ADDITIONAL ITEMS
- ________________
-
- The additional items on the diskette that are not
- included in the installation menus are:
-
- LPTX.SYS
-
- This is an OS/2 device driver that can be used with
- the AES utility for an OS/2 environment only. It can
- be installed when AES is installed depending on your
- system configuration and your requirements. When the
- LPTX.SYS program is used with OS/2 Version 1.3 or
- higher software, it allows you to define four addi-
- tional LPTx ports (LPT4 - LPT7) for use by AES beyond
- the standard set of three LPTx ports (LPT1 - LPT3).
- For more information, see "Installing AES on an OS/2
- Work Station" on page 3-9 and "Using AES to Control
- Multiple Printers" on page 6-5.
-
-
- 1-2 Supplemental Utilities for the IBM LaserPrinter 4029 Series
-
-
-
-
- MODE SWITCHING JOB SEPARATOR FILES FOR AN IBM LAN OR
- MICROSOFT** LAN
-
- These files switch modes and print a separator page
- between each print job. Use these job separators if
- you install the printer on an IBM PC or OS/2 LAN when
- AES is not installed. The files are named
- 4029PPDS.SEP, 4029PS.SEP, 4029PCL.SEP, 4029GL.SEP,
- and 4029B.SEP. See "Mode Switching on a Local Area
- Network" on page 4-1 for information on using these
- files on a LAN.
-
- IBM LASERPRINTER 4029 PRINTER TABLES FOR ADVANCED
- INTERACTIVE EXECUTIVE (AIX*) OPERATING SYSTEM
-
- The 4029 AIX printer tables are included so you can
- switch between printer emulations/modes when attached
- to an IBM RISC System/6000. An AIX text file, called
- AIX_READ.ME, on the Supplemental Utilities diskette
- provides more information. The files are in the
- /AIX/ directory on the Supplemental Utilities
- diskette.
-
- PRINT DEFINITION FILE (PDF) FOR A NOVELL LAN
-
- One PDF file is included so you can switch between
- emulations/modes on your LAN printer without using
- the AES utility. Also provided in the PDF file are
- common setup functions for the printer. The file is
- 4029.PDF. Use your Novell PRINTDEF utility to import
- this file. See your Novell manuals for instructions
- on how to use PRINTDEF.
-
- Also included in the Supplemental Utilities package are
- SCREEN FONTS that match 17 scalable fonts standard in the
- IBM LaserPrinter 4029 Series.
-
-
- DISKETTES
- _________
-
- The diskettes included with the Supplemental Utilities
- package are:
-
- 3.5-INCH LOW-DENSITY DISKETTES 720 KILOBYTES(1) (KB)
-
- The Supplemental Utilities diskette contains AES,
- LaserDriver, LAN job separator files, AIX print tables,
- Novell PDF, a README.TXT file, and Resource Manager. The

-
- SWITCHING EMULATIONS/MODES, SELECTING TEMPORARY SETTINGS, AND
- DOWNLOADING FONTS
-
- The first four options on the LaserDriver Main Menu cor-
- respond to the four emulations/modes supported by the
- printer. By selecting any of these options, a menu is
- displayed with supported commands and functions for that
- emulation/mode. Selecting these commands and functions
- allows you to change the emulation/mode, change the tem-
- porary settings, or download fonts.
-
-
- DEFAULT SETTINGS
-
- The fifth option on the LaserDriver Main Menu allows you
- to specify default settings for the printer. Default
- settings are those settings that are active when the
- printer is turned on or reset. If you select this
- option, the User Default Setup menu is displayed.
-
-
- PRINTER PORT
-
- If you select the last option available on the
- LaserDriver Main Menu, the Select Printer Port menu is
- displayed. This menu lets you specify the printer port
- for LaserDriver output.
-
-
- LASERDRIVER GUIDELINES
-
- 1. The AES utility sends a Set Initial Conditions (SIC)
- command to select the emulation/mode before each
- print job. The SIC command resets any temporary set-
- tings that may have been changed by the LaserDriver
- utility.
- 2. If you want to use the LaserDriver utility when the
- AES utility is installed, select "AES_PORT" from the
- Printer Port menu. This prevents the AES utility
- from interfering with the LaserDriver commands.
- 3. Many applications precede all print jobs with a Reset
- command that can override the settings you have
- selected through the LaserDriver utility.

-
-
- AUTOMATIC EMULATION/MODE SWITCHING UTILITY
- __________________________________________
-
-
- This chapter describes Automatic Emulation/Mode Switching
- (AES) utility installation and use.
-
-
- DESCRIPTION OF THE AUTOMATIC EMULATION/MODE UTILITY
- ___________________________________________________
-
- The AES utility supplied with the Supplemental Utilities
- lets you select any of the following available
- emulations/modes through your printer applications.
-
- o IBM PPDS mode
- o PCL4 emulation or PCL5 emulation, if installed
- o Plotter mode
- o PostScript mode, if installed
-
- You should install AES if you want to print in more than
- one emulation/mode. AES can be installed with DOS,
- Microsoft Windows**, or OS/2 environments. With AES
- installed, your work station print screen function always
- switches to IBM PPDS mode when any emulation/mode assign-
- ment is given to LPT1 during AES installation.
-
- AES is useful on a LAN or in a printer sharing environ-
- ment. AES can be installed on an IBM PC LAN or OS/2 LAN
- file server. In a LAN or printer sharing environment,
- you can have several users with different needs producing
- output from a variety of applications.
-
- AES is also useful in a non-shared printer environment in
- which you have different applications that use different
- emulations/modes.
-
-
- Automatic Emulation/Mode Switching Utility 3-1
-
-
- HOW AES WORKS
- _____________
-
- AES allows the printer to operate automatically as more
- than one printer by allowing you to assign virtual commu-
- nication port names to each of the four emulations/modes
- of the printer. You can then send print jobs in any of
- the emulations to the printer by specifying the port name
- that identifies the emulation/mode of your choice.
-
- For example, if you want to print a spreadsheet using
- PCL4 emulation or PCL5 emulation, send the print job to
- the virtual LPT communications port you assigned to
- HP-PCL emulation during the AES installation. You must
- select the appropriate printer drivers and printer port
- within your application software.
-
- When using AES, your printer can be connected to the work
- station with a serial or a parallel interface. The AES
- utility creates a header for your print job and then
- sends the job to the printer. The header informs the
- printer which emulation/mode is needed to print your job.
- This information is in the EMMDSW.CFG file in the AES
- subdirectory for DOS installation and in the LEXAES.CFG
- file for OS/2 installation.
-
- To understand how virtual printer ports work with AES,
- consider the following. Your word processing application
- outputs data for IBM PPDS mode, PCL4 emulation or PCL5
- emulation, Plotter mode, and PostScript mode. When
- installing AES, you set LPT1 as IBM PPDS mode, LPT2 as
- HP-PCL emulation, LPT3 as PostScript mode, and LPT4 as
- Plotter mode. When the application prompts you for the
- printer port assigned to output, specify LPT1, LPT2,
- LPT3, or LPT4, depending on the emulation/mode used by
- the application.
-
-
- 3-2 Supplemental Utilities for the IBM LaserPrinter 4029 Series
-
-
-
- The AES installation utility guides you through the
- selection of virtual printer port names and
- emulations/modes.
-
- When AES installation is completed, the virtual ports you
- assigned are available only through AES. For example, if
- your printer is physically connected to LPT1 and you
- assign virtual port LPT1 to PostScript mode and virtual
- port LPT2 to IBM PPDS mode, then you cannot send data to
- another printer physically connected to LPT2. The data
- sent to LPT2 is sent to physical port LPT1 with the
- proper information for IBM PPDS mode. If you want to use
- LPT2 with another printer, you must specify NONE for that
- virtual port during AES installation. If this is done,
- AES does not affect any printer data sent to physical
- port LPT2.
-
-
- Automatic Emulation/Mode Switching Utility 3-3
-
-
-
- NOTES:
-
- 1. If additional LPT ports are not added during the
- installation of AES for OS/2, AES has only three
- virtual LPT ports for printer emulations/modes
- (LPT1-LPT3).
- 2. The ports you assign to the different
- 3. In a Microsoft Windows environment, the AES virtual
- port names correspond to the same LPT names, but with
- an .AES file extension. For example, if you assigned
- LPT2 to an emulation/mode during AES installation, it
- corresponds to LPT2.AES in the Microsoft Windows
- environment.

- PLACING AES INTO DOS' UPPER MEMORY w/DOS VERSION 5.0
- ____________________________________________________
-
- To place the AES driver and the Terminate and Stay Resi-
- dent (TSR) portion of AES into DOS Upper memory of DOS
- Version 5.0, complete the following:
-
- 1. Alter the CONFIG.SYS file so it has the following
- lines in the same order as shown:
-
-
- DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS
- DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS
- DOS=HIGH,UMB
- ...
- DEVICEHIGH=C:\AES\EMMDSW...
-
-
- To create the DEVICEHIGH line, substitute DEVICEHIGH
- for DEVICE in the line created by AES.
-
- NOTE: This places the device driver into the Upper
- DSO Memory.
-
- 2. Update the line added to the AUTOEXEC.BAT file by the
- AES installation to read:
-
- LOADHIGH C:\AES\EMMDSW...
-
- To change the line, insert LOADHIGH at the beginning
- of the line that AES created.
-
- NOTE: This places the TSR into upper memory.
-
- 3. Restart your computer.
-
- To verify that the changes occurred, enter the command
- "MEM /CLASSIFY" . The listing from this command displays
- the location of programs in conventional and extended
- memory. The AES TSR, which is named EMMDSW, and the AES
- device driver, which is named EMMDSWP or EMMDSWS, are
- displayed in the upper memory section.
-
- When you type "EMMDSW" to query the AES settings or
- "EMMDSW /R" to temporarily remove AES, you must prefix
- the command with LH or LOADHIGH.
-
- If AES is reinstalled, the two lines created by the AES
- installation must be modified again.

- ______________________________________
-
- To install and start the utilities:
-
- 1. Insert the Supplemental Utilities diskette in a
- diskette drive and make that drive active.
- 2. Type "INSTALL" at the prompt.
- 3. Follow the instructions on the screen to load the
- utility.
- 4. When the installation is complete, remove the
- diskette.
-
- If you install AES, the installation utility may update
- the STARTUP.CMD, CONFIG.SYS, OS2.INI, and OS2SYS.INI
- files. An AES directory (\OS2\AES) is created.
-
- Before these files are modified, backups of these files
- are created by the installation utility with an .AES file
- extension.
-
- NOTE: During the installation process a screen is dis-
- played to ask you if you need additional LPT ports for
- use with AES. If you request additional ports, you are
- prompted to turn the computer off and then restart the
- computer after the installation process is completed.
-
-
- SETTING UP OS/2 PRINT MANAGER MANUALLY
-
- If you select not to have the OS/2 AES installation
- utility automatically set the printer names and printer
- queues, you need to set these Print Manager items.
-
- As with the DOS AES utility, whether the printer is
- attached by a parallel port or serial port, use the LPTx
- names to identify emulations/modes to AES. Therefore, to
- set Print Manager, set three printer names for three
- printer queues. Each printer queue is then associated
- with one printer name and each printer name is associated
- with one LPTx port. Each LPTx port name is associated
- with a printer emulation/mode during the OS/2 AES instal-
- lation process.
-
- For example:
-
- 1. Add three new printer queues.
- 2. Call the queue names PPDSQ, PCLQ, and PSQ.
- 3. Add three new printer names: PPDSPrinter, PCLPrinter,
- and PSPrinter.
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- Automatic Emulation/Mode Switching Utility 3-9
-
-
-
-
- 4. Assign LPT1 as the port for the PPDSPrinter, LPT2 as
- the port for the PCLPrinter, and LPT3 as the port for
- the PSPrinter. These assignments correspond to the
- default selections if you have the PostScript option
- for the IBM LaserPrinter 4029 Series installed.
-
- These assignments are easily changed during the AES
- installation process. You also need to select the queue
- for these printer names (PPDSQ for PPDSPrinter and so
- on).
-
- When you complete these instructions, Print Manager dis-
- plays the new print queues. If you have any other print
- queues on the list, you may delete them or target their
- printers to the NONE port, so that you do not get con-
- fusing results.
-
- If you have an existing queue that transmitted data to
- your LPT1 port before AES was installed, that queue acts
- exactly as PPDSQ in the preceding example with AES
- installed. That is, a job sent to that queue is prefaced
- with a SIC command and is sent to your printer on the
- physical port you specified when you installed AES.
-
- With these three new queues and printer names installed,
- the printer is ready to print.

- AES AND SERIAL COMMUNICATIONS
- _____________________________
-
- You can select the baud rates for DOS and OS/2 serial AES
- drivers from the installation utilities. The other
- serial parameters, such as parity, data bits, and stop
- bits, can be changed as described below:
-
- DOS Change the DOS serial parameters by editing the
- CONFIG.SYS file where the EMMDSWS.SYS entry
- exists. /C is the serial communications param-
- eter that defines baud, parity, and so on in
- the same format as the MODE command. You may
- change this parameter instead of reinstalling
- AES just to change the baud setting. You must
- restart the host computer after making these
- changes.
-
- AES supports the following baud rates: 1200,
- 2400, 4800, 9600, 19200, and 38400.
-
- OS/2 Use the OS/2 Control Panel to change the OS/2
- serial parameters. After changing any serial
- parameters, be sure to restart AES with the
- STARTAES.CMD file.
-
- For DOS and OS/2 AES setups, the default settings are:
-
- BAUD 9600
- PARITY None
- DATA BITS 8
- STOP BITS 1
- PROTOCOL DTR

- MODE SWITCHING ON A LOCAL AREA NETWORK
- ______________________________________
-
-
- This chapter explains how to install AES on the following
- LAN servers with the printer:
-
- o IBM PC LAN
- o IBM OS/2 LAN
- o Microsoft LAN Manager
- o Novell NetWare**
- o Banyan**/VINES**
-
- Using AES and your printer on a LAN lets you select up to
- four emulations/modes in the printer. With AES installed
- on your LAN, you never have to change emulations/modes
- from the printer operator panel.
-
-
- SETTING UP YOUR PRINTER AND AES ON AN IBM LAN SERVER
- ____________________________________________________
-
- To set up and install your printer on an IBM PC LAN or
- OS/2 LAN:
-
- 1. Set up your LAN by following the standard LAN instal-
- lation procedures. Refer to your LAN manuals for
- more information.
- 2. Install the AES driver on the LAN server.
-
- During AES installation, you can assign the AES
- emulations/modes to LPT printer ports. Assign the
- three emulations/modes you plan to use most often to
- the available LPT ports and record the assignments
- for later reference.
-
- For DOS, the EMMDSW.CFG file created by the AES
- utility contains the mapping of the virtual LPT names
- to the printer emulations/modes. For an OS/2 envi-
- ronment, the configuration file is LEXAES.CFG.
-
-
-
- Mode Switching on a Local Area Network 4-1
-
-
-
- You can assign any three emulations/modes to the
- available LPT ports.
-
- The AES utility creates a header for your print job
- and then sends the job to the printer on the LAN.
- The header indicates to your printer the proper
- emulation/mode needed to print your job.
-
- NOTE: If you do not install AES on your file server,
- you can switch modes by using the mode switching job
- separator files on the diskette. You must use these
- job separator pages in non-binary mode communication
- only.
-
-
- 3. Refer to the following topics in this chapter to con-
- tinue installing your printer on an IBM LAN or Micro-
- soft LAN:
- o "Installing Your Printer on an IBM PC LAN Server"
- as follows
- o "Installing AES on an OS/2 or Microsoft LAN
- Server" on page 4-6
-
-
- INSTALLING YOUR PRINTER ON AN IBM PC LAN SERVER
-
- To install your printer on an IBM PC LAN:
-
- 1. Set up your printer on the LAN by following the pro-
- cedure from "Setting Up Your Printer and AES on an
- IBM LAN Server" on page 4-1.
-
- NOTE: If AES is installed on the file server, you
- may want to use the job separator files that were
- supplied on the Supplemental Utilities diskette, the
- mode switch data at the beginning of each separator
- page must be deleted. Make backup copies of these
- files before modifying them, in case you need them
- for future use.
- 2. Copy the job separator files on the Supplemental
- Utilities diskette to the AES driver subdirectory.
-
-
- 4-2 Supplemental Utilities for the IBM LaserPrinter 4029 Series
-
-
- Use the following command:
-
- copy A:\*.sep C:\aes
-
- The job separator files let the printer:
- o Switch emulations/modes
- o Print a page at the beginning and end of each
- print job
- o Identify the emulation/mode for each print job
-
- The following job separator files are located on the
- diskette:
- 4029PPDS.SEP IBM PPDS mode
- 4029PS.SEP PostScript mode
- 4029PCL.SEP PCL4 emulation or PCL5 emulation
- 4029GL.SEP Plotter mode
- 4029B.SEP Install this file only if you want a
- blank job separator page to print.
- Make sure the printer has Blank
- Pages set to print.
-
- 3. Change the print server AUTOEXEC.BAT file and the
- AUTOEXEC.BAT file for each of the systems and work
- stations sharing the printer. See "Changing the IBM
- PC LAN AUTOEXEC.BAT File" for more information.
- 4. On the printer requester systems, select printer
- drivers for the emulation/mode you assigned during
- the AES installation. If the requester uses applica-
- tion software, perform the application instructions
- for selecting printer drivers and printing jobs.
-
- If the requester does not use an application to print
- jobs, use the Net Print command. For example, if you
- assigned PostScript mode to LPT2 during the AES
- installation, type the following command:
-
- net print filename.extension LPT2
-
- When you use the Net Print command, make sure you
- send your jobs to the LPT ports that you assigned to
- them during the AES installation.
-
-
- CHANGING THE IBM PC LAN AUTOEXEC.BAT FILE
-
- If you are installing your printer on an IBM PC LAN, you
- must change the print server AUTOEXEC.BAT file and the
- AUTOEXEC.BAT file for each work station sharing the
- printer. Changing the AUTOEXEC.BAT file lets you assign
- your parallel interface printer port names and add job
- separators.
-
-
- Mode Switching on a Local Area Network 4-3
-
-
-
-
- Changing the Print Server AUTOEXEC.BAT File
-
- Add the following information to the print server
- AUTOEXEC.BAT file:
-
- net start srv servername
- net share alias=LPT1
- net share alias=LPT2
- net share alias=LPT3
- net separator LPT1: c:\aes\4029xsep
- net separator LPT2: c:\aes\4029xsep
- net separator LPT3: c:\aes\4029xsep
- net separator LPT4: c:\aes\4029xsep
-
- servername
-
- A name given to the print server when you installed
- the server software.
-
- alias
- A unique name by which the printer emulations/modes
- are known in the LAN domain. For example, if you
- assigned LPT1 to IBM PPDS mode during the AES
- driver installation, you would choose a unique name
- that identifies LPT1 in the domain as the IBM PPDS
- mode printer.
-
- x
- The name of the job separator file corresponding to
- the emulation/mode you selected during the AES
- driver installation. See page 4-3 for the names of
- the job separator files.
-
- For example, if you assigned LPT1 to IBM PPDS mode with
- an alias of aespx, LPT2 to PostScript mode with an alias
- of aesps, and LPT3 to PCL4 emulation or PCL5 emulation
- with an alias of aeshp, your modified server AUTOEXEC.BAT
- file might look like the following:
-
- net start srv servername
- net share aespx=LPT1
- net share aesps=LPT2
- net share aeshp=LPT3
- net separator LPT1: c:\aes\4029ppds.sep
- net separator LPT2: c:\aes\4029ps.sep
- net separator LPT3: c:\aes\4029pcl.sep
-
-
-
- 4-4 Supplemental Utilities for the IBM LaserPrinter 4029 Series
-
-
- NOTES:
-
- 1. Verify that the separator pages match the
- emulations/modes you assigned to each LPT port when
- you installed the AES utility. Make sure you have
- selected the blank pages printer default setting, do
- not print.
- 2. If you selected IBM PPDS mode for any LPT port,
- verify that the work station Print Screen function
- works correctly.
- 3. You must use one of the job separator files from the
- Supplemental Utilities diskette. If you do not want
- a separator page to print, use the Net Separator
- command and specify "4029b.sep."
- 4. On an IBM PC LAN, you can assign only three parallel
- interface ports. This means that only three
- emulations/modes can be assigned at one time. You
- should decide which emulations/modes you want to use
- most often and assign them to the available LPT ports
- during the AES driver installation.
-
-
- Changing the Work Station AUTOEXEC.BAT File
-
- To change your work station AUTOEXEC.BAT file, add the
- following information to each work station AUTOEXEC.BAT
- file sharing the network:
-
- net start rdr workstationname
- net use LPT1: \\servername\alias
- net use LPT2: \\servername\alias
- net use LPT3: \\servername\alias
-
- For example, if you installed your printer on a server
- named aeslan and the printer aliases were aespx, aesps,
- and aeshp, your modified work station AUTOEXEC.BAT file
- would look like the following:
-
- net start rdr workstationname
- net use LPT1: \\aeslan\aespx
- net use LPT2: \\aeslan\aesps
- net use LPT3: \\aeslan\aeshp

- INSTALLING AES ON AN OS/2 OR MICROSOFT LAN SERVER
- _________________________________________________
-
- If you are installing one printer on an OS/2 LAN server:
-
- 1. Set up your LAN by following the procedure from
- "Setting Up Your Printer and AES on an IBM LAN
- Server" on page 4-1.
- 2. After installing the AES driver, exit the installa-
- tion utility. The AES icon is displayed at the
- bottom of your screen.
- 3. Log on to the LAN server as an administrator.
- 4. Create new printer aliases for the three
- emulations/modes you assigned to the LPT ports during
- the AES driver installation. An alias is the name by
- which a printer emulation/mode is known in the LAN
- domain.
-
- For example, if you assigned LPT1 to IBM PPDS mode
- during the AES driver installation, you would choose
- a unique name that identifies LPT1 in the domain as
- the IBM PPDS mode printer.
-
- The following example shows you one way of creating a
- printer alias. It uses aespx as the alias:
-
- +----------------------------------------------------------------------+
- | |
- | Alias {AESPX} |
- | Description {LPT1Q ON SERVER A} |
- | Server name {A} |
- | Spooler queue {LPT1Q} |
- | |
- | Maximum number of users {} |
- | |
- | When shared {At server startup} |
- | {By administrator action} |
- | |
- +----------------------------------------------------------------------+

- USING EMULATION/MODE SWITCHING SEPARATOR PAGES ON AN OS/2
- __________________________________________________________
- OR MICROSOFT LAN
- ________________
-
- Automatic emulation/mode switching can be accomplished
- without having AES installed by using the emulation/mode
- switching separator pages included on the Supplemental
- Utilities diskette. This feature allows up to six
- printers (three parallel and three serial) with automatic
- emulation/mode switching to be attached to one server.
- This allows great flexibility in the configuration of the
- server and individual work stations.
-
- It is possible to run AES on one printer and use the
- emulation/mode switching separator pages on other
- printers. However, this limits the flexibility of the
- server and is more cumbersome to manage, so it is not
- recommended.
-
- To install the emulation/mode switching separator pages
- on the server:
-
- 1. Start the LAN server.
- 2. Install all desired print drivers according to Print
- Manager documentation.
- 3. Create the "C:\OS2\AES" subdirectory, and copy all
- separator page files (""*.sep"") from the Supple-
- mental Utilities diskette to "C:\OS2\AES".
- 4. Start Print Manager and select the "Setup","
- Printers", and" Add" options. Add one printer name
- for each printer on which you want to install
- emulation/mode switching. For each printer, assign
- the appropriate physical port and select the drivers
- (PPDS, PCL4 or PCL5, GL, or PS) to use with that
- printer.
- 5. Assign print queues on the server. These can be set
- up in a variety of configurations. Two suggestions
- are given below, but a combination of the two config-
- urations might be more useful under some conditions.
- a. Set up one queue for each driver that was
- installed for each printer. For example, if two
- printers are installed, and all four
- emulations/modes are selected for each printer,
- then eight queues are installed. This method is
- used to limit the number of users allowed access
- to certain printers.
-
-
-
- Mode Switching on a Local Area Network 4-7
-
-
-
- Start Print Manager and select the "Setup","
- Queues", and "Add" options. Select one printer
- and one driver for each queue. In the
- "Separator" field of the Add Queue menu, type the
- path and file name for the correct separator
- page. These are listed below:
- PPDS Separator "C:\OS2\AES\4029PPDS.SEP"
- PCL Separator "C:\OS2\AES\4029PCL.SEP"
- GL Separator "C:\OS2\AES\4029GL.SEP"
- PS Separator "C:\OS2\AES\4029PS.SEP"
-
- Repeat the process of adding queues until each
- driver of each printer is represented by a queue.
- b. Set up one queue for each emulation/mode that is
- supported. This means that one queue can use up
- to six emulation/mode switching printers. For
- example, if six identically configured printers
- are installed, and each printer is capable of all
- four emulations/modes, then only four queues are
- installed. This setup is usually the most effi-
- cient if all printers have the same configura-
- tion.
-
- Start Print Manager and select the "Setup","
- Queues", and" Add" options. Select every printer
- that uses IBM PPDS mode. In the "Separator"
- field of the Add Queue menu, type in the path and
- file name for the correct separator page. These
- are listed in 5a on page 4-7. Repeat the process
- of adding queues for PCL4 or PCL5, Plotter, and
- PostScript emulations/modes if supported and
- desired.
-
- NOTE: The separator page field is only visible
- when the server has been started. The actual
- separator pages, once installed, are active until
- deleted.
- 6. Assign network aliases to the new printer queue and
- create an access profile for each alias. This is
- necessary for resource sharing.
- 7. Assign virtual ports (if desired) to each queue up to
- a maximum of nine virtual ports. Virtual ports
- should be assigned only to LPT ports not physically
- attached to a printer. If a user is logged on to the
- actual file server machine, then OS/2 applications
- such as File Manager allow that user to select a
- queue for printing. Virtual ports are useful in OS/2
- and DOS windows on the server mainly for copying
- files to virtual ports. This can also be accom-
- plished by copying the file to a net name for that
- queue.

-
-
-
- SETTING UP AN OS/2 LAN REQUESTER
-
- Do not install AES on your LAN requester. Install AES
- only on the LAN server.
-
- Each work station can use up to nine of the network
- queues defined on the server by assigning a virtual port
- to each queue. This is done by using one of the fol-
- lowing methods:
-
- 1. The system administrator updates the work station
- user's default logon assignments.
- 2. The user changes the assignments after logging on to
- the server.
-
- All of the selected network queues should appear on the
- Print Manager window of the work station once it is
- restarted.
-
- WARNING: VIRTUAL PORTS TAKE PRIORITY OVER PHYSICAL
- PORTS. IF A PRINTER IS PHYSICALLY ATTACHED TO THE WORK
- STATION, IT COULD BE DISABLED BY ASSIGNING A VIRTUAL PORT
- WITH THE SAME LABEL AS THE PHYSICAL PORT.
-
- To have access to the network queues during the execution
- or operation of OS/2 applications such as File Manager,
- it is necessary to create dummy local printers and local
- queues. This limits the accessible network queues to
- three (LPT1-LPT3) on each work station for many OS/2
- applications. The chosen queues must be assigned virtual
- ports in the given range to proceed with installation.
-
- To create dummy local printers and local queues:
-
- 1. Make sure all desired printer drivers are installed
- on the work station.
- 2. Start Print Manager and select the "Setup","
- Printers", and "Add" options. Add one printer name
- for each desired network queue (up to a maximum of
- 3). Select the same printer driver that the corre-
- sponding network queue uses and select virtual ports
- (LPT1-LPT3) that are to be associated with that
- queue.
- 3. Start Print Manager and select the "Setup"," Queues",
- and" Add" options. Create one queue for each dummy
- printer. Do not specify any separator pages.
-
- When the work station is restarted, the new queues and
- all assigned network queues are displayed in the Print
- Manager window.
-
- It may be necessary to restart the server and any work
- stations that are logged on to that server for the new
- configuration to start.

- SWITCHING EMULATIONS/MODES ON A NOVELL LAN
- __________________________________________
-
-
-
- SWITCHING EMULATIONS/MODES WITHOUT USING AES
-
- The NOVELL.PDF file contains several modes and functions
- that are helpful in using the emulation/mode switching
- capabilities of the IBM LaserPrinter 4029 Series.
-
- Use the NOVELL PRINTDEF utility to import the IBM4029.PDF
- file. When imported, the modes and functions defined in
- that file are used with the PRINTCON utility that is
- shipped with Novell NetWare. Use PRINTCON to set job
- classes that can be used with CAPTURE or NPRINT.
-
- Some of the functions contained in the IBM4029.PDF file
- are emulation/mode switch commands that are placed at the
- beginning and end of your print job by the NetWare appli-
- cation.
-
- WARNING: IF YOU USE THE NOVELL PDF FILE TO SWITCH
- EMULATIONS/MODES, DO NOT USE BINARY MODE COMMUNICATION ON
- YOUR NOVELL SYSTEM. THE PDF FILE FUNCTIONS DO NOT
- SUPPORT BINARY MODE COMMUNICATION. USE ONLY THE
- STANDARD, NON-BINARY MODE COMMUNICATION, WHICH IS THE
- DEFAULT.

-
- INSTALLING AES ON A NOVELL NETWARE LAN
-
- You can use AES when a Novell NetWare LAN is installed if
- you do not want to use the PDF functions. A printer can be
- installed at the file server, at a work station as a remote
- printer, or at a work station as a local printer.
-
-
- These configurations are possible:
-
- o Printing on a remote printer that is physically con-
- nected to the file server
- o Printing on a remote printer that is physically con-
- nected to a work station
- o Printing on a local work station printer
-
- NOTES:
-
- 1. The AES software can be installed only on a work
- station and cannot be installed on a Novell NetWare
- file server.
-
- 2. If you install AES while Microsoft Windows is active,
- you must disable Print Manager.
-
- As more printers are available, other configurations are
- possible. Two basic limitations reduce the possibility
- of using AES in setting up the LAN:
-
- o A limited number of LPT-DOS port names (for example,
- applications, CAPTURE, and AES limitations).
- o AES runs on a work station that only supports one
- attached emulation/mode switching printer.
-
- NOTE: Do not start AES until the Novell NET3 or NET4
- utility is started. The AES installation utility creates
- the correct order in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file if you
- answered "Yes" to the LAN question during the AES instal-
- lation. If the network is not accessed from the work
- station AUTOEXEC.BAT file, you can rename the
- AUTOEXEC.AES file to AUTOEXEC.BAT. Then you can use the
- STARTAES.BAT file to start AES after Novell NET3 or NET4
- has been started.
-
-
- Mode Switching on a Local Area Network 4-11
-
-
-
-
- Use the following examples to set up AES on a Novell
- NetWare LAN.
-
-
- Printing on a File Server Printer
-
- When the printer is connected to the file server, you
- should install AES on all the work stations that use the
- file server printer. When installing AES on each work
- station, indicate to the AES Installation utility that
- the printer is physically connected to the same LPTx port
- name that the CAPTURE NetWare command uses.
-
- Use the following steps when each work station is iden-
- tically configured for printing with local work station
- printers:
-
- 1. Install AES on each work station that uses LPT1 as
- the physical port.
- 2. Assign the following defaults for each virtual AES
- port:
- LPT1=IBM PPDS
- LPT2=HP-PCL
- LPT3=PostScript
- LPT4=Plotter
- 3. Complete the AES installation.
- 4. Restart the work station.
- 5. If not previously done, set up the print queues using
- PCONSOLE.
- 6. Type the following NetWare command:
-
- CAPTURE L=1 Q=printqname
-
- Where "1" equals the AES physical output port of LPT1
- and "printqname" equals the name you assigned to the
- file server.
-
- You can now print to LPT1, LPT2, LPT3, or LPT4 depending
- on the desired emulation/mode.
-
-
- Printing on a Remote Work Station Printer
-
- When a remote printer is connected to a Novell work
- station, you must use the RPRINTER NetWare utility on
- that work station. AES must be installed on each work
- station using the printer and the work station physically
- attached to the printer. Use the steps in "Printing on a
- File Server Printer" to set up all work stations on the
- LAN except the work station where the printer is phys-
- ically connected. On the work station where the printer
-
-
- 4-12 Supplemental Utilities for the IBM LaserPrinter 4029 Series
-
-
-
- is physically connected, install AES only if you want to
- switch emulations/modes on that work station. AES does
- not need to be installed to support emulation/mode
- switching functions for the other work stations on the
- LAN.
-
- The following steps describe how to use AES with a
- printer that is physically connected to one work station
- and remotely available to all other work stations on the
- LAN.
-
- 1. Install AES on the work station connected to the
- remote printer using physical port LPT1.
- 2. Assign the following defaults to the virtual AES
- ports:
- LPT1=IBM PPDS
- LPT2=HP-PCL
- LPT3=PostScript
- LPT4=Plotter
- 3. Complete the AES installation.
- 4. If not previously done, set up a remote printer queue
- with PCONSOLE.
- 5. On the work station where the printer is connected,
- type the following command:
-
- RPRINTER L=1
-
- Where 1 indicates the physical printer port LPT1.
-
- 6. On all work stations, type the following command:
-
- CAPTURE L=1 Q=remoteqname
-
- Where 1 indicates the port on the work station that
- is redirected to AES and remoteqname is the Remote
- Printer Queue defined in step 5.
- 7. Make sure that the line containing the EMMDSW.COM
- command, in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file, is after the NET3
- or NET4 NetWare statement.
- 8. Restart this work station.
-
- You can now print to LPT1, LPT2, LPT3, or LPT4 depending
- on the desired emulation/mode, and the job is routed to
- the local printer on LPT1.
-
-
- PRINTING ON A LOCAL NOVELL WORK STATION PRINTER
-
- You can set up your work station to support a local
- printer, which is not to be a remote printer, and still
- have access to a shared file server printer.
-
- NOTE: Since AES on a work station can only support one
- destination printer, you can switch emulations/modes
- through AES on either the local printer or the remotely
-
-
- Mode Switching on a Local Area Network 4-13
-
-
-
- attached printer; but not both simultaneously. The fol-
- lowing example explains how to use IBM PPDS mode as found
- in the IBM4029.PDF file on the remote printer and how to
- use AES to switch emulations/modes on the local printer.
-
- The following steps describe how to use AES on a printer
- attached to physical port LPT1 on your work station and
- access another file server printer in IBM PPDS mode.
-
- 1. Install AES on the work station.
- 2. Assign the following defaults for each virtual AES
- port:
- LPT1=HP-PCL
- LPT2=PostScript
- LPT3=None
- LPT4=Plotter
-
- NONE is used for the LPTx port that accesses the
- printer attached to the file server.
- 3. Complete the AES installation.
- 4. If not previously done, set up the print queues using
- PCONSOLE.
- 5. ADD the following statement to the AUTOEXEC.BAT file:
-
- CAPTURE L=3 J=jobname
-
- 3 equals the LPT3 AES port set to NONE and jobname
- equals the print job name used in PRINTCON that uses
- the "IBM PPDS mode," as found in the IBM4029.PDF
- file. This sets the printer to IBM PPDS mode at the
- beginning of each print job.
- 6. Restart this work station.
-
- You can now print to LPT1, LPT2, or LPT4 to switch
- emulations/modes on your local printer; and when you
- print to LPT3, the job is routed to the other file server
- printer in IBM PPDS mode.
-
-
- INSTALLING AES ON A BANYAN/VINES LAN
- ____________________________________
-
- You can use AES on a Banyan/VINES LAN if you require mode
- switching when printing to a:
-
- o Printer that is physically connected to the file
- server
- o PC printer that is physically connected to one of the
- work stations
- o Locally attached work station printer
-
- NOTE: Since AES is not a true network utility, it can
- only be installed on the work stations. AES cannot be
- installed on a Banyan/VINES file server.
-
-
-
- 4-14 Supplemental Utilities for the IBM LaserPrinter 4029 Series
-
-
-
-
- Other configurations are possible when more printer
- resources are available. There are two limitations in
- using AES that reduce the possibilities in setting up the
- LAN:
-
- o Limited number of LPT DOS port names, such as Appli-
- cations, SETPRINT, AES limitations
- o AES utility running on a PC can only support one
- attached mode switching printer
-
- NOTE: The startup of all VINES software must occur
- before the startup of AES. If this startup procedure is
- in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file, then the correct order is auto-
- matically guaranteed by the installation of the AES
- utility. This is completed by answering "YES" to the LAN
- question asked during the installation of AES. If you do
- not access the network from the work station AUTOEXEC.BAT
- file, then rename the AUTOEXEC.AES to AUTOEXEC.BAT and
- use the STARTAES.BAT file to start AES once VINES
- (usually BAN) has been invoked.
-
- The following three sections are configurations where the
- AES utility can operate in the Banyan/VINES environment.
- They may provide the LAN administrator assistance in
- setting up AES on a Banyan/VINES LAN.
-
-
- PRINTING ON A BANYAN/VINES FILE SERVER PRINTER
-
- When the IBM LaserPrinter 4029 Series is connected to the
- file server, you need to install AES on all work stations
- that require mode switching on the file server printer.
-
- When you install AES on a work station, indicate to the
- installation portion of the AES utility that the printer
- is physically connected to the same LPTx port name that
- is to be used by the SETPRINT VINES command.
-
- An example of how to install AES for printing to a
- Banyan/VINES file server printer follows:
-
- 1. Install AES on each work station that requires mode
- switching. Use LPT1 as the physical port.
- 2. Assign the following defaults for each virtual AES
- port:
- LPT1=IBM PPDS
- LPT2=HP-PCL
- LPT3=PostScript
- LPT4=Plotter
- 3. Complete the AES installation.
- 4. Set up the network print service if this has not been
- completed previously. Use the VINES MANAGE/MSERVICE
- utility to set up the network print service.
- 5. Restart the work station.
-
-
- Mode Switching on a Local Area Network 4-15
-
-
-
- 6. Type the Banyan/VINES network command:
-
- "SETPRINT LPT1 /P:service_name "
-
-
- PRINTING ON A WORK STATION PC PRINTER
-
- When a PC printer is connected to a VINES work station,
- you must use the PCPRINT command on the work station to
- make the IBM LaserPrinter 4029 Series a network printer.
- To access network printers attached to a PC, you need the
- PC Network Printing option available from Banyan Systems
- Incorporated. The AES software must be installed on each
- work station that uses the network printer.
-
- Complete the steps in "Printing on a File Server Printer"
- on page 4-12 to properly set up all work stations on the
- LAN. This includes the work station that has the printer
- physically connected to it.
-
- NOTE: On the work station physically connected to the
- printer, AES only needs to be installed if mode switching
- is desired when printing from this work station. AES
- does not need to be installed to support mode switching
- functions for the other work stations on the LAN.
-
- To use AES on a printer that is physically connected to
- one work station and remotely available to all other work
- stations on the LAN, complete the following:
-
- 1. Install AES on the work station connected to the
- remote printer using physical port LPT2.
-
- If physical port LPT2 does not physically exist on
- your computer, edit the CONFIG.SYS file. To edit
- this file, change the /L=X parameter on the AES
- DEVICE statement containing EMMDSW, where "x" is not
- equal to the number of your actual physical port. In
- this case, x=2. If LPT2 does not physically exist,
- continue AES installation with a physical port that
- does exist and then edit your CONFIG.SYS file.
- 2. Assign the following defaults to the virtual AES
- ports:
- LPT1=IBM PPDS
- LPT2=HP-PCL
- LPT3=PostScript
- LPT4=Plotter
- 3. Complete installation of the AES utility.
- 4. Set up a remote printer service with the VINES
- utility MANAGE/MSERVICE if this has not been com-
- pleted previously.
- 5. On the work station that is physically connected to
- the printer, type the following command: "PCPRINT
- service_name LPT1"
-
-
-
- 4-16 Supplemental Utilities for the IBM LaserPrinter 4029 Series
-
-
-
- 6. On the work station that contains the remote printer,
- type the following VINES command: "SETPRINT
- service_name LPT2"
-
- The physical device, which is LPT2 in this example,
- must be the same as the device used for the AES
- installation. It is important to note that the
- device does not have to exist physically.
-
-
- PRINTING ON A WORK STATION (LOCAL) PRINTER
-
- You can set up your work station to support a locally
- attached IBM LaserPrinter 4029 Series with AES that is
- not to be a remote printer and still have access to a
- shared file server printer without AES.
-
- NOTE: AES on a work station can only support one desig-
- nated printer, so you can perform mode switching through
- AES on either the locally attached printer or the network
- printer, but not both printers simultaneously. The
- example on page 4-14 shows you how to set up a locally
- attached IBM LaserPrinter 4029 Series with an AES work
- station and also how to print to a network IBM
- LaserPrinter 4029 Series without using AES.
-
-
-
- Mode Switching on a Local Area Network 4-17
-
-
-
- To use AES on a printer attached to physical port LPT1 on
- your work station and access another file server printer
- in IBM PPDS mode:
-
- 1. Install AES on the work station.
- 2. Assign the following defaults for each virtual AES
- port:
- LPT1=HP-PCL
- LPT2=PostScript
- LPT3=None
- LPT4=Plotter
- 3. Complete the AES installation.
- 4. Set up the Banyan/VINES print services using the
- VINES MANAGE/MSERVICE utility if this has not been
- completed previously.
- 5. Add the following statement to the AUTOEXEC.BAT file:
-
- SETPRINT service_name LPT3
-
- where 3 equals the LPT3 AES port set to NONE, so AES will
- not affect data sent to this virtual port.
-
- You can now print to LPT1, LPT2, or LPT4 to switch emu-
- lation modes on your local printer. When you print to
- LPT3, the job is sent to the Banyan/VINES file server
- printer.

- RESOURCE MANAGER UTILITY
- ________________________
-
-
-
- DESCRIPTION OF THE RESOURCE MANAGER UTILITY
- ___________________________________________
-
- Resource Manager (RM) is an OS/2-only utility that effi-
- ciently manages printer memory by automatically down-
- loading fonts and macros as required by a PPDS job data
- stream. If sufficient space is not available, then RM
- "unloads" fonts/macros already loaded to the printer and
- loads the new resource required for the current print
- job.
-
- RM provides the capability of having an unlimited number
- of fonts and macros available to applications. Because
- RM tracks the printer memory, loading of inline fonts and
- macros is reduced since RM knows if the resource is
- already in the printer memory.
-
- The font and macro capabilities make RM well suited for
- handling electronic forms on a LAN server. RM is
- designed to operate with OS/2 Versions SE 1.3, EE 1.3, or
- higher software.
-
- NOTE: If AES is not installed, RM can only manage a
- printer attached through a parallel port (physical LPT
- port) or a virtual parallel port configured for the IBM
- 4033 LAN Connection hardware.
-
-
- RM FONT MANAGEMENT
- __________________
-
- RM manages two types of fonts:
-
- SYSTEM FONTS Fonts defined to RM as permanent and avail-
- able to all print jobs. These are the
- fonts that are included in the RM font cat-
- alogs.
-
- INLINE FONTS Fonts defined within the data stream and
- available only to that job stream. These
- fonts are downloaded as part of the print
- job.
-
-
- Resource Manager Utility 5-1
-
-
-
- FONT SELECTION
- ______________
-
- Font selection emulates the printer font selection.
-
- When exact font matches cannot be made, the best-fit font
- is substituted and an errata page is printed following
- the job indicating both the requested font and the sub-
- stituted font.
-
- NOTE: For bitmapped fonts only, the bitmap for the code
- point as it is referenced is loaded to the printer. This
- minimizes the unnecessary transmission delay associated
- with loading bitmapped fonts.
-
- Both the selection precedence and best-fit requirements
- may be modified by the SEARCH and BEST-FIT parameters of
- the Comprehensive Font Selection command. For more
- information on this command, see the Technical Reference
- for the IBM LaserPrinter 4029 Series.
-
-
- RM MACRO/FORMS MANAGEMENT
- _________________________
-
- RM manages two types of macros:
-
- SYSTEM MACROS Macros permanently defined to RM for
- access by all job streams. These macros
- are defined in the file_path[SYS_MACRO]
- subdirectory.
-
- INLINE MACROS Macros defined locally within the job
- stream.
-
-
- RM MACRO PROCESSING
- ___________________
-
- Macro management is a complex system since macros may be
- nested and macros may also select fonts. RM must make
- sure all the resources (fonts and other macros) are resi-
- dent in the printer before allowing the macro to execute.
- RM first searches the inline macro library and second the
- system macro library.
-
- Macro processing proceeds as follows:
-
- o If the macro and all dependent resources exist in the
- printer, send the macro invocation to the printer.
-
- OR
-
- o If the macro does not exist in the printer, search
- the inline macro file.
-
-
-
- 5-2 Supplemental Utilities for the IBM LaserPrinter 4029 Series
-
-
-
- - If the macro is found, send the macro and all
- dependent resources to the printer.
-
- - If the macro is not found, search the system
- macro file for the macro.
-
- If the macro is found, send the macro and its
- dependent resources to the printer.
-
- Once the macro is found and sent to the printer, the
- macro is executed.
-
- NOTE: If the printer has insufficient memory to handle
- all of the resources required, the job is terminated and
- RM logs the error on the job errata sheet.
-
- When used with the AES utility, PPDS defined fonts and
- macros are remembered across job boundaries. If you exit
- IBM PPDS mode, and then return to IBM PPDS mode, the
- printer is restored to its original state in terms of
- active fonts and macros.
-
- NOTE: Resource Manager only supports IBM PPDS mode.
-
-
- INSTALLING RM ON AN OS/2 ENVIRONMENT
- ____________________________________
-
- To install and start the utility:
-
- 1. Insert the Supplemental Utilities diskette in a
- diskette drive and make that drive active.
- 2. Type "INSTALL" at the prompt.
- 3. Follow the instructions on the screen to load the
- utility.
- 4. When the installation is complete, remove the
- diskette.
-
- If you install RM, the STARTUP.CMD file may be updated,
- and the OS2.INI file is updated. An \OS2\RMGR directory
- is created during installation.
-
- NOTE: When you install RM with AES, the AES defined PPDS
- port is the port where RM should be installed. If you
- install AES with RM, see "Using RM with AES" on
- page 5-11.
-
-
- Resource Manager Utility 5-3
-
-
-
- Upon completion of installation, a STARTRM.CMD file is
- built in the RMGR directory. If you choose not to update
- the STARTUP.CMD file, you may start RM by issuing this
- command:
-
- d:\path\STARTRM
-
- where "d:" is the drive the RM files were copied to and
- "path" is the file path for the RM directory.
-
-
- CONFIGURING RM
-
- The first time you use RM after installation, the program
- has no knowledge of fonts or macros available to it.
-
- To configure RM for fonts, select the Catalog Font func-
- tion under the menu item "File" to catalog or list RM
- fonts. All downloadable font files for a given catalog
- must be in the same subdirectory. Up to 16 catalogs may
- be specified. Catalog naming or file specification is
- limited to 8 characters for the file name and 3 charac-
- ters for the file extension.
-
- To configure RM for macros, copy user-defined macros to
- the path specified at setup for system macros. Macros
- must be designated as follows:
-
- o SYSnnnnn.MCR is specified, where nnnnn is the macro
- number as referenced in the data stream.
-
- o Leading 0s must be specified, for example, macro # 1
- must be specified as SYS00001.MCR.

- RM CONFIGURATION FILE
- _____________________
-
- You can create the RMCONFIG.CNF file before RM is
- started, or it is created automatically by RM if one is
- not found. This file contains information that may be
- useful for altering RM to a specific user environment.
- It is recommended that you use the defaults initially.
- You can then modify the file to override the defaults.
- To modify the configuration file, select the menu item
- "File" and then select "Configuration file" from the
- pull-down menu. This information is provided as refer-
- ence material since online help is provided for the con-
- figuration dialogs.
-
- NOTE: All references to NVRAM refer to printer NVRAM.
-
- The format of the RMCONFIG.CNF file is as follows:
-

- | DEFAULT VALUE | NAME | DESCRIPTION |
- +-----------------+------------------+----------------------------------|
- | 16 | MAX_OP- | The maximum number of font files |
- | | EN_FONTS | allowed to be open simultaneous- |
- | | | ly, including input and output |
- | | | data streams, font files, and |
- | | | others. OS/2 imposes no |
- | | | restrictions on the |
- | | | number of open files. This limit|
- | | | is provided as a potential tuning|
- | | | aid. |
- +-----------------+------------------+----------------------------------|
- | 32 | MAX_USER_MAC- | The maximum number of macros RM |
- | | ROS | allows the user data stream to |
- | | | define. RM only holds macros in |
- | | | the buffer memory until they are |
- | | | invoked, then it deletes an inac-|
- | | | tive macro if necessary to down- |
- | | | load a new one. |
- | | | |
- | | | NOTE: Since a minimum of 204 |
- | | | bytes must be allocated for each |
- | | | user macro, this limit cannot |
- | | | exceed the MACRO_MEMORY_LIMIT |
- | | | divided by 204. See page 5-5. |
- +-----------------+------------------+----------------------------------|
- | 0 | MIN_SYS_MAC- | The smallest ID to be used for |
- | | RO_ID | system macros. The data stream |
- | | | invocation of a previously unde- |
- | | | fined macro with an ID nnnnn not |
- | | | less than MIN_SYS_MACRO_ID causes|
- | | | RM to try to read a system macro |
- | | | from file SYSnnnnn.MCR on sub- |
- | | | directory FILE_PATH{SYSTEM_MACRO}|
- | | | on page 5-7. |
- | | | |
- | | | To minimize I/O operations, |
- | | | installations should normally |
- | | | restrict system macro IDs to |
- | | | as high and narrow a range as |
- | | | possible, and set |
- | | | MIN_SYS_MACRO_ID to as large a |
- | | | value as possible. |
- +-----------------+------------------+----------------------------------+
- | 99 | MAX_US- | The largest number of user fonts |
- | | ER_FONTS | to be downloaded. If this value |
- | | | is kept as small as possible, it |
- | | | aids RM font management and min- |
- | | | imizes computer memory use. |
- | | | (Approximately 100 times |
- | | | MAX_USER_FONTS bytes are |
- | | | allocated for user fonts.) |

- RM PANELS
- _________
-
- RM provides two display panels to assist in problem
- determination and memory/performance tuning:
-
- RM MESSAGE LOG Contains time-stamped message of all RM
- activity. Messages are prioritized by
- severity so that MIN_MSG_LEVEL of the
- RMCONFIG.CNF file sets the threshold
- for the minimum message level logged.
- The start time and completion time of
- the job are always displayed. See
- MIN_MSG_LEVEL on page 5-5 for more
- information.
-
- DEVICE STATISTICS Each LPT has a device statistics window
- associated with it. The amount of PC
- memory and printer memory used and
- other pertinent information is dis-
- played.
-
- Using information from both panels allows RM to be opti-
- mized to the specific user environment by adjusting
- RMCONFIG.CNF parameters.
-
-
- RM JOB ERRATA LOG
- _________________
-
- RM prints an errata sheet following each job in which
- warnings or errors occurred. This sheet includes such
- items as font substitutions, where both the requested
- font and the substituted font are listed.

- USING RM WITH AES
- _________________
-
- RM is a powerful tool that can greatly enhance your
- printing performance on the IBM LaserPrinter, but only
- when you use IBM PPDS mode. When the printer changes
- emulation modes, any PPDS resources in the printer, such
- as downloaded macros or fonts are lost. Therefore, if
- mode switching is frequently performed on the printer, RM
- becomes less effective in enhancing your overall system
- performance.
-
- RM can be used with the AES utility that accompanies the
- Supplemental Utilities package. When these two utilities
- work together, reduced performance can occur from mode
- switching. But, these two utilities communicate to
- ensure RM is made aware when AES switches the printer
- from IBM PPDS mode. Multiple, sequential jobs sent to
- the PPDS port of AES will not cause a loss of printer
- resources. However, jobs sent to non-PPDS ports of AES
- will cause RM to be reset.
-
- If installed with AES, the RM port must be the same LPTx
- port that AES defines as the IBM PPDS port. For example,
- the printer is physically attached to the PC or PS/2 on
- COM1. When AES is installed, the following port assign-
- ments are made:
-
- LPT1=PostScript
- LPT2=PPDS
- LPT3=Plotter
-
- When RM is installed, make sure it is installed on the
- virtual port LPT2, since this is the port AES has
- assigned as IBM PPDS mode in the IBM LaserPrinter 4029
- Series printers.
-
- RM and AES are implemented as Character Device Monitors
- within the architecture of the OS/2 environment. AES
- needs to precede RM on the monitor chain, so that the
- virtual port redirection functions of AES work properly.
- This is automatically taken care of by the OS/2 installa-
- tion utility, AES, and RM.

-
- USING RM WITH A SERIALLY ATTACHED PRINTER
- _________________________________________
-
- AES must be installed for serially-attached printers
- using RM. The virtual LPTx port configured as the AES
- PPDS port is the same LPTx port configured for RM. If
- AES is only providing serial redirection, then only one
- virtual port needs to be configured for AES. See "Auto-
- matic Emulation/Mode Switching Utility" for information
- on AES setup.

- USING AES AND THE IBM PRINTER SHARING OPTION
- ____________________________________________
-
- The IBM Printer Sharing Option (PSO) is a combination of
- hardware and software that allows up to six computers to
- share one printer.
-
-
-
- 6-2 Supplemental Utilities for the IBM LaserPrinter 4029 Series
-
-
-
- To use the AES utility with the PSO:
-
-
- 1. Install the PSO hardware but do not install the PSO
- application software (SP.COM and SSDI.BAT). Remove
- these applications if they are already installed.
- 2. Install AES to output to a COM port that you connect
- to the PSO.
- 3. Send your print jobs to the mapped virtual LPTx
- ports. The printer emulation/mode for the resulting
- output is switched through the PSO.
-
- NOTES:
-
- 1. Other computers attached to the PSO should have AES
- installed since the printer remains in the
- emulation/mode selected by the previous job.
- However, another computer running the SP application
- software will work.
- 2. For any serial channels that are connected to the
- host computer running AES, job prefixes or suffixes
- programmed in the PSO are not recommended.
- 3. Switch setting 10 "Append Form Feed" should be disa-
- bled (ON position).
-
-
- SETTING UP YOUR RISC SYSTEM/6000 SYSTEM
- _______________________________________
-
- Your RISC System/6000 system using AIX Version 3 oper-
- ating system provides built-in support for your IBM
- LaserPrinter 4029 Series AES function.
-
- The following instructions describe how to install the
- necessary 4029 printer files on the RISC System/6000
- system using an AIX Version 3.1.5 (or earlier) operating
- system. It is assumed that you have basic knowledge of
- the RISC System/6000 system and the configuration of
- printers using the System Management Interface Tool
- (SMIT).
-
- A RISC System/6000 system and an AIX Version 3 operating
- system support automatic switching between IBM PPDS mode,
- PCL4 emulation or PCL5 emulation, Plotter mode, and
- PostScript mode. To enable this capability, copy the
- 4029 files from the utility diskette to the AIX operating
- system.
-
- To install the 4029 files on a RISC System/6000 system:
-
- 1. Insert the Supplemental Utilities diskette in the
- default diskette drive.
- 2. Type the following commands and press Enter:
-
- dosread -a /AIX/4029.asc /usr/lpd/pio/predef/4029.asc
- dosread -a /AIX/4029.pcl /usr/lpd/pio/predef/4029.pcl
- dosread -a /AIX/4029.gl /usr/lpd/pio/predef/4029.gl
- dosread -a /AIX/4029.ps /usr/lpd/pio/predef/4029.ps

- Additional Topics 6-3
-
-
-
- 3. Type the following commands and press Enter:
-
- chmod 664 /usr/lpd/pio/predef/4029*
-
-
- To configure the printer on the RISC System/6000 system,
- use SMIT to define the following:
-
- NOTE: If the printer is being attached to either an
- Xstation(1) or a network printer adapter, go to step 2.
-
- 1. Printer device: if the printer is directly attached
- to the RISC System/6000 system, then define the
- printer as either an "other parallel" or "other
- serial" printer.
- 2. Virtual printer: select the" IBM 4029 LaserPrinter"
- from the printer list. A printer queue may be
- created for each mode of the printer: IBM PPDS mode,
- PCL4 emulation or PCL5 emulation, Plotter mode, and
- PostScript mode.
-
- For additional information, see the AIX_READ.ME file in
- the /AIX/ directory on the Supplemental Utilities
- diskette.

- REPLACING A 4216-031 OR 4019
- ____________________________
-
- If you have the AES utility installed on an IBM 4216-031
- or an IBM 4019-001 printer while using DOS or OS/2 envi-
- ronments, the following information may help you replace
- the 4216 AES or 4019 AES with the 4029 AES.
-
- When you replace an IBM 4216-031 or IBM 4019 printer with
- another printer, you need to reinstall AES. For complete
- instructions, see "Installing AES on a DOS Work Station"
- on page 3-4 or "Installing AES on a Microsoft Windows
- Work Station" on page 3-5.
-
- The utility automatically removes all references to the
- AES utility in the CONFIG.SYS, AUTOEXEC.BAT, and
- STARTUP.CMD files.
-
-
- COMPATIBILITY WITH PREVIOUS VERSIONS OF AES
- ___________________________________________
-
- In the DOS environment, the 4029 AES only functions prop-
- erly with the IBM LaserPrinter 4029 Series. You must use
- the 4019 Version of the DOS AES utility for use on a IBM
- LaserPrinter Model 4019. Similarly, you must use the
- 4216-031 Version for use on a IBM Personal Page Printer
- II Model 31.
-
- In the OS/2 environment, version 3.1 of the AES utility
- works with both the IBM LaserPrinter 4019 and IBM
- LaserPrinter 4029. This version does not support the IBM
- Personal Page Printer II Model 31.
-
-
- USING AES TO CONTROL MULTIPLE PRINTERS
- ______________________________________
-
- In the DOS environment, AES can only control one physical
- printer at a time. If you want to have one printer on
- physical port LPT1 and another on COM1, AES can only
- perform mode switching on one of the printers, not both
- printers.
-
- In the OS/2 environment, version 3.1 of the utility now
- supports control of multiple printers connected to the
- same physical system. Because of the limitations of
- having only LPT1, LPT2, and LPT3 in an OS/2 system during
- installation of AES, you are offered the option of adding
- additional available LPT ports. If you choose, four
- additional LPT ports are made available for AES if you
- are using OS/2 Version 1.3 or higher software. This
- allows you to define ports LPT1-LPT7.
-
- An LPTX.SYS OS/2 device driver is copied to the
- C:\OS2\AES subdirectory and your CONFIG.SYS file is
- altered. This LPTX.SYS device driver adds additional
-
-
- Additional Topics 6-5
-
-
-
- LPTx ports for use with AES. So, printer 1 could use
- virtual ports LPT1, LPT2, and LPT3 for three of its emu-
- lation modes, and printer 2 could use virtual ports LPT4,
- LPT5, LPT6, and LPT7 for four of its emulation modes.
-
- NOTES:
-
- 1. If the LPTX.SYS driver that accompanies the IBM 4033
- LAN connection adapter is present, the AES installa-
- tion utility does not change it.
-
- 2. A LAN administrator might consider use of mode
- switching separator pages in "Using Emulation/Mode
- Switching Separator Pages on an OS/2 or Microsoft
- LAN" on page 4-7 rather than using AES to control
- multiple printers.
-
-
- USING AES WITH BINARY MODE COMMUNICATION
- ________________________________________
-
- The printer operates in one of two communication modes:
- non-binary or binary. The factory default is non-binary
- mode communication.
-
- You put the printer in one of these communication modes
- by using the operator panel or by sending a command from
- the computer to the printer. See "Setting Binary Mode
- Communication on the Printer" on page 6-7 for more infor-
- mation. The AES installation utility normally sets the
- AES utility in non-binary mode communication. However,
- you can operate the printer in binary mode communication
- with the AES utility if you set up the AES utility and
- the printer for binary mode communication.
-
- Non-binary mode communication meets most job require-
- ments. However, if you need to improve your print job
- recovery for printing jobs that are canceled or inter-
- rupted by the host computer, especially in a shared
- printer environment, you need to set the printer and the
- AES utility to binary mode communication. This allows
- the printer to recover automatically from partially
- transmitted print jobs. This means that when binary mode
- communication is active and a print job is canceled from
- the host computer, the next print job starts normally.
- For example, if AES and the printer are not set to binary
- mode communication and a job is canceled from the host
- computer, the printer may or may not recover the job
- depending on when the print job was canceled from the
- host computer. The next print job or jobs may not print
- or may print with incorrect output.
-
- With binary mode communication in AES, the printer sup-
- ports Binary Image PostScript communications protocol
- mode from application software. If you use your printer
-
-
- 6-6 Supplemental Utilities for the IBM LaserPrinter 4029 Series
-
-
-
- for a large amount of PostScript image printing and your
- application supports Binary Image PostScript communi-
- cations protocol mode, you will notice an improvement in
- PostScript job performance time when you use the printer
- and AES in binary mode communication.
-
- To set the AES installation utility for binary mode
- communication:
-
- 1. Place the Supplemental Utilities diskette into a
- diskette drive and make the drive active.
- 2. At the DOS prompt, type "AESINST /B" and press Enter.
- At the OS/2 prompt, type "INSTALL /B" and press
