  13.    The Speaker audio device driver provide support for playing digital
  14.    audio waveform files on the standard PC speaker by using the
  15.    MMPM/2 audio system.   This support is important because it allows
  16.    non-multimedia enabled systems to play short sound effects and other
  17.    short digitized sound through the PC speaker.
  18.  
  19.    The speaker driver provides support for PCM waveform files that
  20.    are (8-bit/16-bit, stereo/mono, 11Khz-44khz).

  22.    This driver is intended for use under OS/2 2.1 or greater.

  24.    The quality of sound produced from the speaker device is low
  25.    compared to a real audio card, and will vary from machine to
  26.    machine.

  28. Caveat
  29.  
  30.    The standard PC speaker was not intended to play digitized waveform
  31.    sound.  In order to produce a reasonable approximation of the
  32.    sound contained in .WAV files, the device driver requires
  33.    exclusive use of the CPU for an extended period of time.  This
  34.    may have undersirable effects on performance critical multitasking
  35.    such as communications, modem transfers, networking, etc.
  36.    We do not recommend that this software be used in conjunction with
  37.    communications software, time critical, or mission critical application.
  38.    This may include printing and mouse operation during sound generation.

  40.    If you experience problems, you should discontinue use of the
  41.    speaker device driver.

  43.    Interrupts are enabled while the speaker is being operated, however
  44.    multitasking operation is suspended.

  48.    IBM grants the right to use, reproduce, and distribute this
  49.    speaker driver software provided that (1) it is not distributed for
  50.    profit, (2) it is used only with licensed copies of OS/2 2.1,
  51.    (3) the software is not modified, (4) all copyright notices
  52.    remain with the software, (5) the end user agrees to the license.

  54.    This speaker driver is provided in 'as is' condition without
  55.    warranty of any kind and no support will be provided.

  57.    IBM and its vendors takes no responibility and is not liable for
  58.    any consequences or damages of any kind resulting from the
  59.    use or existence of this software.

  61.    IBM does not guarantee that the speaker driver software will run
  62.    on all machines.  IBM is not obligated to provide any updates to
  63.    this software.

  65. Installation
  66.  
  67.    1) Install the MMPM/2 base.  The MINSTALL program requires you
  68.       to select one of the subsystems in order to do an install.  If
  69.       you don't already have a audio card, or CD-ROM, then you
  70.       can select Software Motion Video which doesn't require any special
  71.       hardware other than the monitor.

  73.       Reboot after this installation.

  75.    2) Place the files from the SPKRDD package into a subdirectory (i.e. \spkrdd)

  77.    3) Use the MINSTALL installation program from the MMPM/2 folder to
  78.       select the \spkrdd directory.  Install the Speaker Driver
  79.       package by selecting the speaker driver object and pressing Install.

  81.    4) After install is complete, a reboot is required.

  83. Configuration

  85.    The speed and volume of the sound produced by the speaker device
  86.    driver must be configured on a machine by machine basis.

  88.    1) Select the Multimedia Setup program in the MMPM/2 folder.
  89.  
  90.    2) Select the speaker settings page, to customize the speed and
  91.       volume of speaker.  The speaker push button will place a test
  92.       sound, that will give you some feedback on the speed and volume
  93.       adjustments.

  95. Uninstall

  97.    If you experience problems with the speaker device driver and wish to
  98.    un-install it.

  100.    1) Edit you config.sys, and comment out the device driver line:

  102.       REM DEVICE=D:\MMOS2\SPKRDD.SYS
  103.  
  104.    2) Edit MMPM2.INI and remove PCSPEAKER and SPKRDDAMP and any references
  105.       to these names.

  107. Notes:
  108.  
  109.    1) If you install only Software Motion Video support, and then the speaker
  110.       device driver,  the Software Motion Video support will run without
  111.       audio support. This is preferable, since both software video and
  112.       the speaker driver compete for the CPU.

  114.       If however you want to try, running them both together, the
  115.       MMPM2.INI can be updated as follows.  This will also cause the
  116.       audio and video to be out of sync.

  121.    2) The system sounds support, for which the speaker driver is intended for,
  122.       will be installed automatically by the install of MMPM/2 base.  System
  123.       sounds plays on the default device.  If you install support for
  124.       another audio card first, then install the speaker device driver, the
  125.       other audio card will be the default.  The default can be changed
  126.       in the Multimedia Setup Program.
