- GETTING A SONY CD ROM WORKING
- -----------------------------
-
- 486/33 with AMI Bios, Sony CD ROM with Sony CD ROM ISA bus card,
- sony_cdu.sys version 2.20 (a) driver, and MSCDEX.EXE version 2.21.
-
- The steps I followed to get my CD ROM working in a DOS Box are as follows:
-
- 1) Download a copy of MSCDEX.EXE version 2.21 from the Microsoft
- Multimedia BBS, at 206-936-4082. I could not get MSCDEX.EXE version
- 2.20 to work. Version 2.21 eliminates the need for Setver.exe,
- and does not check for DOS version (the error I got prior to version 2.21
- was "incorrect DOS version").
-
- 2) Create a specific DOS version by formatting a floppy diskette from
- a DOS session with the /s parameter enabled. You can save a lot of space
- if you create a 160 kb diskette with the system files installed, as
- follows:
-
- a) put a 360 kb floppy in a 5.25" drive.
- b) from DOS 5.0, and assuming you are on drive B with your 5.25" floppy,
- give the command
- "format b: /f:160 /s"
-
- 3) Make sure your CD ROM works in straight DOS. Copy the config.sys and
- autoexec.bat from your DOS boot disk to this 160 kb floppy.
-
- 4) Start up OS/2.
-
- 5) Start an OS/2 command prompt session.
-
- 6) Using an editor, add the line "device=c:\os2\mdos\fsfilter.sys" to
- your 160 kb floppy's config.sys (assuming that OS/2 is installed on drive
- c:). Also replace the "device=mouse.sys" line of config.sys or the
- mouse.com" line of the autoexec.bat of the 160 kb floppy with
- a line installing the OS/2 mouse driver. Using an editor, add the line
- "c:\os2\mdos\mouse".
-
- 7) You now have created a floppy diskette which could be used to start
- your CD-ROM. However, I recommend at this point, creating an image of the
- floppy on your hard disk by giving the command, "vmdisk b:
- c:\os2\cdrom.img". This command will create an exact image of your floppy,
- More - ╒Y■es or ╒Return■, ╒N■o? and store it as specified. You will get a message that only 50% of the
- diskette has been read, but the image file is created anyway, and it only
- occupies 160 kb, instead of the 1.44 mb that I used to use up for each DOS
- image.
-
- 8) Finally, go into a program icon, select "sessions", select
- "DOS_startup_drive", enter "c:\os2\cdrom.img", and save it.
