- Application Programs
-
- IBM is currently testing DOS, Microsoft ** Windows, ** and OS/2
- application programs; most are supported with OS/2 2.0. However,
- some applications, usually because of their design or because
- they use undocumented interfaces, will not operate properly with
- OS/2 2.0. IBM is in the process of contacting these vendors about
-
- resolving these incompatibilities. These applications are:
-
- Application programs that use virtual control-program interface
- (VCPI) memory extenders:
- Other DOS extenders, such as VCPI, that require exclusive
- access to the 80386 control registers, are not supported
- because they could violate the integrity of OS/2 2.0.
-
- We support application programs that use DOS Protect-Mode
- Interface (DPMI), Expanded Memory Specification (EMS), or the
- Extended Memory Specification (XMS)..
-
- Windows enhanced-mode programs:
- Enhanced-mode programs requiring the dynamic link library,
- WINMEM32.DLL, are not supported. However, Microsoft
- Windows Version 3.0 enhanced-mode programs written to
- comply with DPMI are supported.
-
- Application programs that directly address the physical sectors
- of OS/2 managed non-removeable DASD:
-
- Functions in programs that directly address the physical sector
- to perform write operations are not supported, because these
- operations will generally destroy the OS/2 2.0 file system
- integrity.
- Windows programs that call the Windows mini-programs:
-
- Some Windows applications allow the user to invoke the
- Windows mini-programs to run a subset of function. If you had
- Windows Version 3.0 on your system and did not format your
- hard disk when you installed OS/2 2.0, these mini-programs

-
- are called automatically. Otherwise, in most cases, access to
- these mini-applications is optional and does not cause any
- functional loss in the application itself.
-
- Timing sensitive DOS applications:
- DOS programs that generate digitized sounds through the
- speaker will not run at full speed. Turning off the sound will
- help the programs run faster.
-
- Certain DOS communication applications that require more
- than 1000 interrupts per second or require a high level of
- interrupt service might not work.
-
- DOS debuggers:
- Under OS/2 2.0, DOS applications cannot access the debug
- registers (DR0-DR7) in a DOS session. DOS debuggers will not
- be able to set hardware breakpoints in OS/2 2.0, and all read
- and write operations to debug registers in virtual 8086 (V86)
- mode will be ignored.
-
- DOS running under WIN-OS/2:*
-
- At the present time, WIN-OS/2 does not allow you to start DOS
- sessions from within WIN-OS/2.
-
- While testing is continuing, current compatibility information about
- applications is available through your dealer or Marketing
- Representative, as well as through the following:

- Prodigy (call the appropriate phone number for your area, or

- Graphical Applications Programs
-
- OS/2 2.0 supports a broad variety of display-adapter hardware; for
- example, Video Graphics Array (VGA), Extended Graphics Array
- (XGA* ), 8514, Enhanced Graphics Array (EGA), and Color Graphics
- Array (CGA). It allows OS/2 programs, DOS programs, and
- Windows programs to run in both window sessions and full-screen
-
- sessions. OS/2, DOS, and Windows programs can run successfully
- in both the foreground and the background. Typically, the OS/2
- user need not be concerned with the graphics modes that are
- used within a program, or whether a program will run successfully
- in a background session.
-
- Some types of display adapters do, however, place limits on the
- ability of the OS/2 operating system to run certain classes of DOS
- and Windows graphics programs in the background. The limits are
- because of the difficulty of providing virtual access to the
- display-adapter hardware without disturbing either the foreground
- session or other background sessions.
-
- Under certain conditions, DOS applications that use graphical
- display modes will become suspended in background sessions
- when they attempt to write to the display.
-
- The following summarizes the conditions under which OS/2 2.0
-
- limits the running of some DOS and Windows programs.
- When running on VGA graphics hardware:
-
- DOS applications that use the higher resolution VGA and EGA
- graphics modes to write to the display will be suspended when
- the application is in a background session and the system
- desktop does not have control of the display.
- When running on XGA hardware, and OS/2 2.0 has been
-
- installed so that Presentation Manager* (PM) is running in XGA
- mode:

-
- DOS applications that use XGA graphics modes or the higher
- resolution VGA and EGA graphics modes will be suspended
- when the application is in a background full-screen session.
- They cannot be run in a window on the system desktop.
-
- When running on XGA graphics hardware, and OS/2 2.0 has
- been installed so that PM is running in VGA mode:
- DOS applications that use the higher resolution VGA and EGA
- graphics modes to write to the display will be suspended when
- the application is in a background session and the system
-
- desktop does not have control of the display.
- When running on 8514 graphics hardware, and OS/2 2.0 has
- been installed so that PM is running in 8514 mode:
-
- DOS applications that use 8514 graphics modes will be
- suspended when the application is in a background full-screen
- session. They cannot be run in a window on the system
- desktop.
- When running on 8514 graphics hardware, and OS/2 2.0 has
-
- been installed so that PM is running in VGA mode:
- DOS applications that use the higher resolution VGA and EGA
- graphics modes to write to the display will be suspended when
- the application is in a background session and the system
- desktop does not have control of the display.
-
- When running on EGA graphics hardware:
- DOS applications that use the higher resolution EGA graphics
-
- modes to write to the display will be suspended when the
- application is in a background session and the system desktop
- does not have control of the display.
-
- The display drivers provided for WIN-OS/2 full-screen sessions are
- designed so that they write to the display only when the session is
- in the foreground. They suppress all background write operations
- in a way that allows a WIN-OS/2 program to continue to run while
- the session is in the background. When the session assumes the
- foreground, the WIN-OS/2 program is automatically prompted to
- redraw itself.

-
- When using WIN-OS/2, use a Windows display driver that
- suppresses background writing to the display. Otherwise,

- USING THE TABLE:
-
- To determine under what conditions your applications will run in a
- background session:
-
- 1. Find your graphical display hardware in the ■Type of Video┐
- column.
- 2. Find your System Desktop Mode.
-
- 3. Read across the table to your application column.
-
- For example, assume you have a DOS application using VGA
- mode on a system with VGA video. The application is in
- full-screen. To determine if the application will be suspended:
- 1. Find your type of video (VGA) in the ■Type of Video┐ column.
-
- 2. Find your System Desktop Mode (VGA).
-
- 3. Read across the table to your application column (DOS
- Application, Matches Desktop Mode, Full-Screen).
-
- The PF indicates that the DOS application runs when PM has
- control of the screen or when the application is in a foreground
- session.
